This book is about the role of expert systems in marketing, particularly in the consumer goods industry. Section I describes the changing nature of consumer marketing and presents the rationale and need for expert systems. The remainder of the book combines a tutorial on expert systems with a series of expert system prototypes. The tutorial material is presented in three places. First, section II is devoted to introducing expert systems in general. Chapter 3 provides a general introduction to the topic, which is continued in chapter 4 where a small expert system (the Promotion Advisor) is used to illustrate the important features of a backward-chaining, rule-based system. The promotion theme is extended in chapter 5 where a larger system is presented. The material in all three of these chapters was designed as an introduction and tutorial on the most common technology for building applied expert systems: the backward-chaining, rule-based inference engine. Tutorial material is also contained in the body of the chapters that describe the prototypes. This material is usually in the form of sample rules and a description of the process for applying the rules. The third location of the expert system material is in chapters that follow discussions of the prototypes. Chapter 7 is a technical chapter on the coupling of expert systems to traditional systems.

Globalization and increasing international trade are becoming a fact of life, bringing increasing tensions and conflicts over their impacts on societies, livelihoods and the environment. The impacts are felt in industrialized countries but are often most harsh in developing economies. The growing debate involves not only professional economists and lawyers, but a broad range of academic disciplines as well as civil society and citizens' groups around the world. Free Trade and the Environment examines the impact economic integration has on the environment, using Mexico, as it transformed itself from one of the most closed economies to one of the world's most open, as a case study. As new nations join the Free Trade Area of the Americas or the World Trade Organization, they are considering the path taken by Mexico nearly 20 years ago. The author investigates two commonly held and opposing beliefs in the policy community about the impact of free trade on the environment. While some believe that free trade will raise incomes in developing countries, thus encouraging governments to protect the environment, others argue that free trade simply provides an incentive for heavily polluting industries to move to developing countries with lax environmental regulations. The author shows that for Mexico in fact neither position is correct, and concludes with suggestions for free trade policies that couple environmental benefits with economic integration.

This Festschrift, dedicated to Manuel Hermenegildo on the occasion of his 60th birthday, contains papers written by many of his closest collaborators. Manuel received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and among various positions he was an endowed chair in Information Science and Technology at the University of New Mexico. In 2007 he became the founding director of the IMDEA Software Institute, where he is now a Distinguished Professor, while also a full professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).He has published more than 300 scientific publications, given numerous keynotes and invited talks at major conferences, coordinated many national and international projects, and served the community in major conference roles, on journal boards, and on funding, scientific, and research committees. Among his awards are the Julio Rey Pastor prize in Mathematics and Information Science and Technology and the Aritmel prize in Computer Science; he is an elected member of the Academia Europaea; and in 2022 he was elected a Fellow of the ACM for contributions to program analysis, verification, parallelism, logic programming, and the IMDEA Software Institute. Throughout his career Manuel has shown his amazing capacity for detailed work, thoroughness, and expert contributions, along with the interpersonal skills needed for successful collaboration, such as a positive attitude and a sense of humor. The contributions in this volume reflect the quality and the scope of his research interests and mentoring successes.

Significant progress has been made in recent years in understanding the origins of cutaneous maligant melanoma. Knowledge of the relationship between solar radiation and melanoma has changed and it now appears that both the character and timing of exposure may be more important than total cumulative dose in accounting for risk. The melanoma-sunlight model may prove an instructive heuristic exercise for environmental epidemiology, as we currently tend to restrict ourselves to a search for uniform total dose--response relationships between cancers and suspected environmental carcinogens. The study of the relationship between acquired melanocytic nevi and melanoma has led to useful new information about predictors of melanoma risk, and in addition has opened new perspectives on the development of nevi in children. Definition of the factors for nevus development in children may lead to the possibility of primary prevention programs for melanoma in younger generations of children. Recent new evidence suggests that certain occupational groups may be at elevated risk of melanoma. A great deal of work is going into the study of ways of screening high risk populations in order to detect melanoma at its earliest stages when current treatment protocols are most effective. The visibility of lesions on the skin challenges classical definitions of early detection and screening in epidemiology.

Interest in the etiology of malignant melanoma has increased enor mously in the last 10 years, after it was realized that the incidence of the cutaneous form of the disease was rising. Treatment of the disease has not improved dramatically, and our best hope for curtailing the rise in mortality and morbidity from the disease appears to be primarily through early detection and, per haps in the future, through prevention. It is thus very important for the medical community to be able to recognize individuals and groups at high risk of the disease because of either familial and con stitutional factors and lifestyle or exposure to environmental risk factors. This book, arising from a meeting held in Vancouver in 1984, pro vides a summary of the latest findings amo ~ Caucasian popula tions along with perspectives on the most im, Jrtant environmental risk factors identified to date. Comparison of results from the four major analytic studies presented here also demonstrates that a num ber of factors implicated in other common cancers are probably not related to the incidence of melanoma. These include smoking, alco hol consumption, and for the most part, diet. Southern-Led Development Finance examines some of the innovative new south-south financial arrangements and institutions that have emerged in recent years, as countries from the Global South seek to transform their economies and to shield themselves from global economic turbulence. Even before the Covid-19 crisis, it was clear to many that the global economy needed a reset and a massive increase in public investment. In the last decade southern-owned development banks, infrastructure funds, foreign exchange reserve funds and Sovereign Wealth Funds have doubled the amount of long-term finance available to developing countries. Now, as the world considers what a post-Covid-19 future will look like, it is clear that Southern-led institutions will do much of the heavy lifting. This book brings together insights from theory and practice, incorporating the voices of bankers, policymakers and practitioners alongside international academics. It covers the most significant new initiatives stemming from Asia, tried and tested examples in Latin America and in Africa, and the contribution of advanced economies.
