Arthur P. Cracknell, Costas A. Varotsos
R5,130 Discovery Miles 51 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Provides a thought-provoking and original approach to the science of climate. Emphasizes that there are many factors contributing to the causation of climate change. Clarifies that while anthropogenic generation of carbon dioxide is important it is only one of several human activities contributing to climate change. Considers climate change responses needed to be undertaken by politicians and society at national and global levels. Totally revised and updated with state of the art satellite data and climate models currently in operation around the globe.

Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite - A New Operational Cloud Imager (Paperback): Keith D. Hutchison, Arthur P. Cracknell Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite - A New Operational Cloud Imager (Paperback)
Keith D. Hutchison, Arthur P. Cracknell
R2,011 Discovery Miles 20 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is the next-generation multispectral imaging instrument to fly on US operational, polar-orbiting meteorological satellites. VIIRS will gather data across 22 spectral bands and be used to create products for a variety of applications including weather forecasting and climate change studies. VIIRS consolidates the best features of heritage instruments, including near-constant resolution and nighttime visible imagery. Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite: A New Operational Cloud Imager provides the first comprehensive guide on the design and exploitation of cloud data collected by the VIIRS. Expert researchers Hutchison and Cracknell discuss the fundamental principles necessary to interpret surface and cloud features in multispectral meteorological satellite imagery. They begin by tracing the evolution of satellite meteorology and detailing previous instruments on which VIIRS is based. Next, they examine the user requirements for VIIRS data products and the studies used to convert these requirements into sensor design parameters. The focus then shifts to the principles and techniques used to exploit VIIRS cloud data. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of automated processes to retrieve 3-dimensional cloud fields from a variety of algorithms, some of which were developed for the VIIRS. Supplying material for both experienced researchers and those new to the field, Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite is a must-read for anyone interested in evaluating and using the data gathered from the VIIRS project.

advanced very high resolution radiometer AVHRR (Hardcover): Arthur P. Cracknell advanced very high resolution radiometer AVHRR (Hardcover)
Arthur P. Cracknell
R5,126 R4,678 Discovery Miles 46 780 Save R448 (9%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the years since the launch of the first of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRRs) in 1978, the data from these instruments have come to be used for a very wide range of non-meteorological applications. In this book, the author describes the satellite system, the instrument itself, the control of the spacecraft and the data-recovery arrangements. The book also covers various aspects of the processing of the data to extract useful environmental information. The applications of the data to marine problems, based primarily on the study of sea-surface temperatures from the thermal-infrared channels of the instrument, are considered, as well as the study of vegetation and a whole variety of other land-based and hydrological applications.

Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought - A Global Study (Hardcover, New): Vijendra K. Boken, Arthur P. Cracknell,... Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought - A Global Study (Hardcover, New)
Vijendra K. Boken, Arthur P. Cracknell, Ronald L. Heathcote
R4,524 Discovery Miles 45 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Agricultural droughts affect whole societies, leading to higher food costs, threatened economies, and even famine. In order to mitigate such effects, researchers must first be able to monitor them, and then predict them; however no book currently focuses on accurate monitoring or prediction of these devastating kinds of droughts. To fill this void, the editors of Monitoring and Predicting Agricultural Drought have assembled a team of expert contributors from all continents to make a global study, describing biometeorological models and monitoring methods for agricultural droughts. These models and methods note the relationships between precipitation, soil moisture, and crop yields, using data gathered from conventional and remote sensing techniques. The coverage of the book includes probabilistic models and techniques used in America, Europe and the former USSR, Africa, Asia, and Australia, and it concludes with coverage of climate change and resultant shifts in agricultural productivity, drought early warning systems, and famine mitigation. This will be an essential collection for those who must advise governments or international organizations on the current scope, likelihood, and impact of agricultural droughts.

Handbook of Thermoplastics Injection Mould Design (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): P.S. Cracknell,... Handbook of Thermoplastics Injection Mould Design (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
P.S. Cracknell, R.W. Dyson
R1,479 Discovery Miles 14 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Injection moulding is one of the most important methods of manufacturing plastics products. Through the development of sophisticated micro processor control systems, the modern injection moulding machine is capable of producing precision mouldings with close tolerances in large numbers and with excellent reproducibility. This capability, however, is often limited by the lack of a proper appreciation of mould design. The mould, or tool as it is often called, is at the heart of the injection moulding process. Its basic function is to accept the plastic melt from the injection unit and cool it to the desired shape prior to ejection. It is not, however, simply a matter of the mould having an impression of the shape to be moulded. Many other factors have to be taken into account - for example, the ability to fill the mould impression properly and efficiently without inducing weaknesses in the moulding and the efficient cooling of the moulding in order to maximise production rates without diminishing the quality of the moulding. In addition, the type of mould, gate and runner system, and ejection system which will best meet the needs of a particular job specification have to be determined. In our experience lack of attention to such factors leads to the mould limiting the ability of the injection moulding machine and preventing the process as a whole from achieving its true potential.

Remote Sensing and Global Climate Change (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994): Robin A. Vaughan, Arthur... Remote Sensing and Global Climate Change (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994)
Robin A. Vaughan, Arthur P. Cracknell
R2,937 Discovery Miles 29 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Experts report the state of the art in the study of global climate change using remote sensing techniques. Topics covered include the principles of remote sensing, the management of data, data requirements in climatology, the principles of modelling, the input of data into models, and the application of remote sensing to the atmosphere, ice and snow, seas and land.
The book is highly topical given the current great public and scientific awareness of possible man-made changes to the climate. It is essential reading for anyone new to the field, and invaluable as a reference work to those already working in it.
