A stunning new insight into how the most crucial lesson you can learn in today’s challenging business environment is how to change the fundamentals of what you do, rather than carry on fighting a battle that is already lost.
The near destruction of the music industry at the hands of online piracy and its subsequent recovery on the backs of digital streaming platforms is more than just the biggest story of disruption and reinvention of the digital age. It is also a trove of insights on how to confront the metamorphosis we are all facing in dealing with the Covid-19 era, as accelerating tech and economic changes reshape our work, our play and our very minds.
Will Page, Spotify’s first chief economist, extrapolates music’s journey into eight guiding principles for pivoting through the ubiquitous disruption in nearly all industries. Expect the unexpected with transferable lessons coming from Starbucks, Tupperware and even Groucho Marx. The notion of 'Tarzan Economics' ties these principles together: a framework for recognising and acting on disruption, by letting go of the old vine and grabbing onto the new. Page joyfully brings these insights to life and provides a guide for knowing not just how to grab the new vine, but when. He assesses the new dynamics of the 'long tail', identifies friends and foes in the battle for scarce attention and provides a practical tool for discovering the right role for each of us to succeed in this new modern world.
As we emerge from the unprecedented disruption of a global pandemic, Pivot shows all of us - individuals, organisations and institutions - that if the vine we are holding onto is withering, we can have confidence to reach out for a new one in 2023 and beyond.
Polymeric materials have been and continue to be a focus of
research in the development of materials for energy conversion,
storage and delivery applications (fuel cells, batteries,
photovoltaics, capacitors, etc.). Significant growth in this field
started in the early 1990s and has continued to grow quite
substantially since that time. Polymeric materials now have a
prominent place in energy research.
For polymers, particularly polyelectrolytes, being used in fuel
cell and battery applications, the importance of chain
microstructure, chain dynamics, and nanoscale morphology on the
overall performance characteristics of these materials cannot be
overstated. As further advancements are made in polymer chemistry,
control of nanostructure and characterization, there is a necessity
for organized forums that foster cross-fertilization of knowledge
and ideas between experts in polymer chemistry, chemical
engineering, and polymer physics. This volume is the result of such
a forum.
Most of the chapters in this book are based on a cross-section of
the oral presentations in a symposium on Polymers for Energy
Storage and Delivery held in March of 2011 as part of the 241st ACS
National Meeting & Exposition (Anaheim, CA). The book contains
17 chapters presented in two parts. Part one focuses on polymers
for battery applications and will cover theory and modeling, novel
materials, and materials characterization. Professor Janna Maranas
has provided an excellent review of the current state of
understanding in polyelectrolytes as ion conductors in batteries.
Part two will focus on polymers for fuel cells and will cover novel
materials, transport, and materials characterization with a brief
introduction into the history of polyelectrolytes for fuel cells
and the classes of materials being pursued. Realizing the common
role that nanostructure plays in both battery and fuel cell
applications, Professor Moon Jeong Park and coworkers have also
contributed a chapter demonstrating the role of nanostructured
polyelectrolyte systems in energy storage and delivery. In
addition, the editors are pleased to have a chapter-contributed by
Professor Howard Wang and staff scientists of the NIST Center for
Neutron Research-on the most state-of-art, in-situ neutron methods
for studying lithium ion batteries.

Why do some countries appear to be far more centralized than
others? In some countries local government has responsibility for a
wide range of public services, while in others these services are
delivered by national and other non-local bodies. Moreover national
government oversees the operation of local government with varying
degrees of stringency. In addition, local politicians in some
countries seem to have greater influence over their national
counterparts than those in others. The answer to this question can
be found in the distinctive patterns of development experienced in
southern and northern Europe. Differences in national-local
relations also have direct implications for patterns of
policy-making at the local level. This book examines the legal and
political bases of relationships between national and local
government in Britain, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, and
Spain, and assesses the causes and consequences of differences in
such relationships.
This Handbook brings together a collection of leading international
authors to reflect on the influence of central contributions, or
classics, that have shaped the development of the field of public
policy and administration. The Handbook reflects on a wide range of
key contributions to the field, selected on the basis of their
international and wider disciplinary impact. Focusing on classics
that contributed significantly to the field over the second half of
the 20th century, it offers insights into works that have explored
aspects of the policy process, of particular features of
bureaucracy, and of administrative and policy reforms. Each classic
is discussed by a leading international scholars. They offer unique
insights into the ways in which individual classics have been
received in scholarly debates and disciplines, how classics have
shaped evolving research agendas, and how the individual classics
continue to shape contemporary scholarly debates. In doing so, this
volume offers a novel approach towards considering the various
central contributions to the field. The Handbook offers students of
public policy and administration state-of-the-art insights into the
enduring impact of key contributions to the field.
Part of the How to Help series of books exploring issues commonly
faced by children and young people at home and in school, Autism
Spectrum Disorder (ASD) offers a complete introduction to this
complex and often confusing topic. A lack of clarity can arise for
many reasons, including the broad spectrum of characteristics and
symptoms that can be represented within an ASD diagnosis (ranging
from the very severe, requiring 24-hour monitoring, to the mild but
no less important, where the individual can be successfully
included in education and society), and the many competing
interventions and treatments all purporting to be successful.
Arguing that every child and young person with autism can and
should lead an inclusive and fulfilling life, Jo-Ann Page and Gavin
Reid show that it is up to us as adults to ensure that this is
possible - and show how parents, carers, teachers and schools can
help.
From the author of the phenomenal bestseller The Keeper of Stories,
comes the next uplifting story of how the most unexpected
friendships are forged in the most unlikely of places . . . Jo
Sorsby knows she is hiding from her past when she agrees to look
after her uncle’s stationery shop. Spending her days glimpsing
the lives of her customers as they experiment with what’s on
offer is a welcome distraction from the life she has left behind.
Yet far from home, Jo feels adrift… But when she meets Ruth, a
vicar running from a secret, and Malcolm, a septuagenarian
struggling to write his first book, she realises that she isn’t
alone. It’s the beginning of a friendship that can transform
Jo’s life… if only she can let them in. Readers adore Sally
