A collection of Zen Poetry from the Abbot of Ocean Eyes Zen Center in Long Beach, California. This first collection of poetry was written between 1995 and 1997, and follows the spiritual path of a Buddhist Layperson searching for balance between the life of dedicated Zen practice and the life of layperson living in this modern world. The introduction contains an interview with Do Chong's grand-teacher Zen Master Seung Sahn, the 78th Patriarch of Korean Chogye Buddhism, in which the two discuss poetry and Zen Practice. Some exiting insights about Zen Poetry and life are shared with the reader in this conversation.
Meta-analysis is a formal synthesis of results and findings of scientific studies, which can assist in gaining new insights, explaining differences between results of similar studies, or determine useful directions of research. In this book we focus on the use of meta-analysis in environmental economics and related fields of study. The first part of the book covers the overall meta-approach methodology for social sciences and economics in particular. This is followed by technical and non-technical discussions of statistical and rough-set techniques for analysis. At appropriate places this is supplemented with reviews of applications in environmental economics and related fields. In the second part of the book a number of case studies show different aspects of the application of meta-analysis. The research areas considered include, among others, tourism multipliers, air pollution valuation, risk and value of life, pesticide price policy, travel time savings, and transport externality and policy issues. The benefits of the appropriate application of meta-analysis in environmental economics are a better use of existing information and knowledge, removal of some of the subjectivity from analysis and forecasting, and greater clarity as to where future efforts in environmental economic analysis can most gainfully be deployed.
The aim of this book is to highlight the great potential of decentralized (i.e. local or urban) energy policies in achieving environmentally-benign developments for modern cities. Urban sustainability is placed in the context of the debate on global sustainable development. A wide array of policy initiatives is discussed and evaluated, ranging from market-based energy policies to technological innovation policies for the energy sector. A theoretical framework for technology adoption processes is developed and empirically tested. The main question addressed is: which are the critical success factors for successful urban energy policies? This question is also dealt with in a meta-analytic context by assessing and comparing the performance of energy policies in various European cities, with a particular view to renewable energy.
First published in 1965. This book is of compelling interest to all concerned with the good management of industry. This report examines the attitudes of managers towards the problems that confront them. The attitude of managers can be divided in to two broad categories, described in the report as 'thrusting' and 'sleeping'. The research conducted in this report shows that the managements of 'thrusting' firms are characterized, first, by a determination to expand, secondly by a precise knowledge of the environment in which they operate and, thirdly, by the systematic use of techniques which enable them to make rational decisions. In order to find possible ways in which more firms might achieve a similar 'self-awareness' PEP staff had discussions with nearly 100 businessmen, senior civil servants, scientists and educationalists. As a result of these investigations PEP has formulated some suggestions as to how the gap between thrusters and sleepers might be narrowed to the benefit of the whole economy.

This book is a collection of Leea (TM)s most important works, placed in a historical setting and contextualized through the commentaries of other leading researchers in the field. The contributors were selected on the basis of their standing in the field. Some have been directly involved in collaborations with Lee, while others have participated in public discussions on particular controversies. All contributors know David Lee well as a researcher and scholar, and some know him on a more personal levela "as a student, supervisor, mentor, or friend. It is this mixture of involvements with David Lee and his writings that yields a unique exchange of ideas on the origins of movement. Closing the Gap: The Scientific Writings of David N. Lee is an invaluable resource for academics and postgraduate students studying perceptuo-motor control.

It has been frequently stated that energy storage is an essential requirement if significant generation by renewables is to be achieved, but are the present systems likely to be adequate? This text reviews the present status and future potential of the different systems of energy storage, their role in power generation by renewables specifically, and the electricty market generally.
Tribology embraces the process of friction, lubrication, and wear in mechanical equipment. It finds particular application for reducing the consumption of energy and fuel, and for increasing the reliability and service life of machinery. As hard-won experience is built up, the principles of good design are increasingly clarified and become available for wider use. There can be few examples for which this cycle of learning and feedback is more economically valuable than the refinement of the internal combustion engine - the prime mover of today's highly mobile economy. Based on papers presented at an IMechE seminar, "Tribology of Internal Combustion Engines" should be read by all those working in the fields of tribology and automotive engine technology. Topics covered include: -Vehicle environmental legislation: past, present, and future- Recent developments in piston assemblies- Cylinder bore surface finish - its evolution and specification- The development of high - stream aluminium tin silicon copper bearing alloys for automotive applicationsDevelopments in camshaft and follower technologyRing zone lubrication: implications for reduced emissions and enhanced engine lifeAutomotive lubricants: today's choices, tomorrow's possibilitiesThe Jaguar AJ-V8 engine
A major strategy to reduce transport congestion and other social costs of transport is to ensure that travellers make the best decisions, based on real time information. A wide range of technological systems have been developed to provide this information, but little is known about how travellers actually respond to it. This book offers an overview of various transport telematics options and provides an appropriate methodological framework, followed by a presentation of results from actual applications of these telematics systems from a range of European countries in various transport sectors. The empirical results are supplemented by analytical models and geographic information systems representations with a view on generalizing these findings and identifying the key parameters which determine user response.

Men's adventure magazines were a form of pulp publishing which flourished in 1950s and 1960s America, pandering to the cruelty and lust of young men with luridly illustrated stories of war, sleaze and savagery. They arose partly in response to the inauguration of the Comics Code in 1954, as a way of circumventing censorship by presenting material in a new, "adults-only" format. The prime years of the men's adventure magazine unleashed a visual and verbal deluge of exposed and tormented flesh, bloody mayhem and sexual delinquency, representing a unique cultural phenomenon in US publishing and art. SOFT NUDES FOR THE DEVIL'S BUTCHER is a new anthology which collects some prime examples of text and artwork from a range of men's adventure magazines published during the prime years of the genre. The book is divided into two main sections: FEATURES includes a selection of sensationalistic, semi-factual confessions and case histories on such subjects as rape in Soviet prisons, Hitler's secret sex life, prostitution, the persecution of witches, and other aberrations; and FICTION collects vivid examples of garishly illustrated short pulp fiction, with categories including war, white slavery, Nazi horror, jungle savagery, Red menace, Devil worship, torture, sadism and erotic carnage. The book also features numerous examples of interior art from classic men's magazines, and includes 35 features and stories, with more than 50 full-size illustrations, and 16 pages of full color. Pulp Mayhem is a new illustrated book series of vintage pulp fiction, art and pop culture.
