Fraud (Paperback): Peter Davey Fraud (Paperback)
Peter Davey
R295 Discovery Miles 2 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It starts with a mishap, then a cover-up. Before he knows it, Dominic Seeley, an editor in a London publishing house, is caught in an ever-widening spiral of deception -- and falling for a girl way out of his league. Actress Nicola Carson is falling too -- down the slippery slope from Hollywood to hell via rehab -- while Edward Haymer has reached rock bottom already. A reclusive writer, his dreams of recognition are fading fast and when yet another rejection letter strikes a nerve, it triggers a chain reaction that could crush them all. In this wry yet compassionate portrait of the 'Age of the Unique Selling Point', Peter Davey explores the dark road that leads to deceit and betrayal -- but also, perhaps, to being more 'alive for love'.

R4,994 Discovery Miles 49 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the heart of this study lies an illustrated catalogue of over 2,200 clay pipes dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, the majority of which are held in Yorkshire collections. The size and topographical range of Yorkshire ensures the county's suitability as a case study for examining pipe production as well as regional variations and trade. The extensive catalogue is preceded by a discussion of the methodology of studying clay pipes, the documentary evidence for kiln sites and production, Yorkshire clay sources, the development of the bowl form, the stem, the range of marks, the distribution and the archaeological evidence for imported pipes. Lists of pipemakers and associated documents and inventories are presented in appendices.

The Archaeology of the Clay Tobacco Pipe, Bk. 16 - Negotiating African-American Ethnicity in the 17th-century Chesapeake - Colono Tobacco Pipes and the Ethnic Uses of Style (Paperback)
J. Cameron Monroe; Edited by Peter Davey
R1,170 Discovery Miles 11 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this, the 16th issue of The Archaeology of the Clay Tobacco Pipe, the subject matter returns to the east coast of the USA, last visited by the Chesapeake Bay volume (Number XII). A new, extended, typology for Colono pipes is presented, along with a detailed analysis of their chronology. A study of the archaeological evidence at these sites, together with a comparison of the stylistic elements present on the Colono pipes with examples from Mali in West Africa and from elsewhere in the African Diaspora outside North America, strongly supports previous arguments for an African ethnicity for the Chesapeake finds. The author links the increasing social hostility towards Africans in the area, as the century progresses, with changes in the styles observed on the pipes "investing them with...a symbolic content...as a method of communicating cultural survival and ethnic solidarity." The work is of particular significance to prehistorians who lack the means of studying past societies using historical sources.

This survey highlights the evolution and distribution of pipe manufacturing in the London parish of Newington, placing it within the broader context of both local and regional industrial activity. The study assembles life histories for known makers in the area, examines the evidence for production sites and describes and illustrates their products, and analyses the status of pipemakers in relation to other industries in the area.

This study reports on one of the largest and best dated assemblages of clay pipes recovered from the site of Port Royal in Jamaica. Many of the pipes came from Bristol and date to the 17th century AD. Recovered during excavations at Port Royal between 1981 and 1990, many of the pipes came from sealed contexts and their distribution could be mapped in detail. Georgia Fox's study discusses her methodology and the excavations, and includes a large catalogue and typology and raises questions and issues which are of relevance on a much wider scale for the study of clay pipes in Northwest Europe in general.

Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (Paperback, 7th Revised edition): Peter Davey, Mark H. Wilcox, William Irving, Guy Thwaites Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (Paperback, 7th Revised edition)
Peter Davey, Mark H. Wilcox, William Irving, Guy Thwaites
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Antimicrobial agents are essential for the treatment of life-threatening infections and for managing the burden of minor infections in the community. In addition, they play a key role in organ and bone marrow transplantation, cancer chemotherapy, artificial joint and heart valve surgery. Unlike other classes of medicines, they are vulnerable to resistance from mutations in target microorganisms, and their adverse effects may extend to other patients (increased risk of cross-infection). As a consequence, there is a constant requirement for new agents, as well as practices that ensure the continued effective prescribing of licensed agents. The fully revised and updated seventh edition of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy is an essential guide to the principles of antimicrobial chemotherapy, the problem of resistance and its control through policies, antimicrobial stewardship and surveillance. The book provides an aid to informed, rational prescribing for common bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections. Divided in five parts, the book cover issues specific to both the developed and developing world. Part 1 'General property of antimicrobial agents' discusses mechanisms of action and resistance to antibacterial, antifungal antiprotozoal, antiviral, and antiviral agents. Part 2 'Resistance to antimicrobial agents' provides guidance about the problem of resistance, mechanisms of acquired resistance and genetics of resistance. Part 3 'General principles of usage of antimicrobial agents' analyses the use of the laboratory, general principles of the treatment of infection, dosing in special groups (extremes of age, pregnancy, obesity), safe prescribing, prophylaxis and the role of policies in antimicrobial stewardship. Part 4 'Therapeutic use of antimicrobial agents' provides advice about the treatment of common infections which are described by anatomical. There are also chapters on the management of mycobacterial disease, viral infections, HIV/AIDS and parasitic infections. The final part of the book analyses the development and marketing of antimicrobial drugs. This seventh edition of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy continues to be a valuable resource for undergraduates and graduates requiring a thorough grounding in the scientific basis and clinical application of these drugs.

Exploring Boundaries - The Architecture of Wilkinson Eyre (Hardcover): Peter Davey, Kurt W. Forster Exploring Boundaries - The Architecture of Wilkinson Eyre (Hardcover)

The London architectural firm Wilkinson Eyre Architects, founded in 1983, has been drawing attention since the 1990s with its wealth of innovative and imaginative designs - notably its spectacular and structurally ambitious bridges. The best-known and most highly acclaimed are the Gateshead Millennium Bridge (2001) and the Floral Street Bridge (2003). The firm has won many prizes, including the RIBA Stirling Prize twice. It has also demonstrated the increasingly international scope of its activities by entering the competitions for the Guangzhou West Tower in China and the Tensegrity Bridge in Washington DC, USA.

This book offers detailed documentation of some 15 structures and projects, with special attention paid to the context of each design. The projects presented include the Stirling Prize-winning Magna Centre in Rotherham, UK; the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, UK; the Guangzhou West Tower in China; and the Gatwick Airbridge, UK, among others.

Philippe Gosse; Edited by Peter Davey
R3,316 Discovery Miles 33 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The collection of almost 1,000 clay pipes from the quarantine port of Pomegues provides a unique insight into pipe production and use throughout the Mediterranean and further afield. The author's exhaustive study makes a significant contribution to knowledge both of pipe production and circulation in a number of different ways. Although these have already been recognised and published from a range of sites throughout the Mediterranean basin, the Pomegues collection, arriving off Marseilles on ships from many ports of origin, is by far the most extensive and varied yet collected. This study establishes a logical nomenclature for the formal and technical variables that can be observed on these pipes."
