Incidents in the past have made scientists aware of the need for
accurate methods of radionuclide analyses in order to estimate the
risk to the public from released radioactivity .This book is an
authoritative, up-to-date collection of research contributions
presented at the 11th International Symposium on Environmental
Radiochemical Analysis. Representing the work of leading scientists
from across the globe it presents information on analytical
radiochemistry, the behaviour of radionuclides in the environment,
radioactively contaminated land, fate of radionuclides in natural
and engineered environments and behaviour of radionuclides in
radioactive wastes. This essential work will be a key reference for
graduates and professionals who work across fields involving
analytical chemistry, environmental science and technology, and
hazards and waste research and disposal.
The analysis of radionuclides in the environment became extremely
important after the accident at Chernobyl in1986. The accident made
scientists aware that accurate methods of radionuclide analyses are
essential in order to estimate the risk to the public from released
radioactivity. Methods are still being developed today because of
the ongoing requirement to monitor environmental radioactivity and,
to assess the radionuclide waste inventory for the recently
proposed intermediate radioactive waste repository. This book
brings together current developments in radioactive analyses.
Environmental Radiochemical Analysis III is an authoritative, up to
date review of research contributions presented at the 10th
International Symposium on Environmental Radiochemical Analysis.
Representing the work of leading scientists across the globe this
edition provides information on: * new methods of radioanalyses *
waste steams during decommissioning * radioactivity measurements in
the environment * hazard assessment in decommissioning *
improvements in measurement instrumentation * application of
software to measurements * current IAEA activities for the ALMERA
network * proficiency testing and research and development in the
NDA. This exceptional work offers an insight into topical areas of
research and is a key point of reference for graduates and
professionals alike who work across fields involving analytical
chemistry, environmental science and technology, and hazards and
waste research and disposal.
Environmental Radiochemical Analysis II brings together
comprehensive, up-to-date information from international experts in
the field. Coverage includes information on new methods of
radionuclide analyses, developments and improvements in existing
methods, method comparisons, gamma detector performance and new
software products, method uncertainty, underground laboratory
facilities, method QA and QC, field studies covering colloid work,
in-situ injection into rock strata and sampling of reduced waters
for actinide assay. This stimulating, authoritative text makes
essential reading for practising radioanalysts and provides
valuable information for researchers and professionals in academia
and industry.
Why is Nelson a hero? Because he was a captain before he was 21, a
man who shaped the course of history from the decks of his ships,
hailed as a saviour of the nation, a hero killed in action at the
moment of his greatest victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and
immortalized ever since. What lies beneath the romantic legend of
Horatio Nelson? What did he do before he became famous? Why did he
fall from grace twice? Did he really put a telescope to his blind
eye? Why did Victory's signal lieutenant change his 'England
expects . . . .' signal at Trafalgar? What made his leadership
special? This book traces Nelson's spectacular and often
controversial career from a Norfolk parson's son who entered the
Royal Navy at the age of twelve, through his youth as a difficult
and ambitious naval subordinate, his rise to admiral and celebrity,
his fighting career and his outstanding victories at the battles of
the Nile, Copenhagen and ultimately Trafalgar.
Numicon builds a deep understanding of maths through a
multi-sensory approach, developing children's fluency, reasoning
and problem-solving. Numicon Pupil Books are designed for children
to use independently after whole class teaching and learning has
taken place. The Pupil Books are divided into two sections:
Practice and Going Deeper. The Practice sections provide
independent practice to improve understanding and fluency while the
Going Deeper sections provide open questions to challenge pupils
and deepen their conceptual understanding and develop mastery. The
four-page sections for each of the Activity Groups follow the order
of the long term plans in the Teaching Resource Handbooks and
reflect the content in the Focus activities, enabling progress to
be matched against the Milestones. There is one Pupil Book for each
year group. An answer book is provided in the pack of 15 and is
also available on Numicon Online (on the Oxford Owl website). The
Numicon Pupil Books have been tried and tested in the classroom.
The South African War was a costly and bitterly contested struggle.
It was fought in a region populated by five million people, four
million of whom were black. This is the first history of the war to
focus upon the wartime experiences of black people, and to examine
the war in the context of a complex and rapidly changing colonial
society increasingly shaped, but not yet transformed, by mining
capital. The ways in which the war influenced the lives and
livelihoods of different sections of the black population are
studied - from chiefs and newspaper editors to peasant farmers and
artisans, to farm tenants and industrial workers. Dr Warwick shows
that black people were far more than either spectators to, or
passive victims of, a white man's quarrel, and presents a thorough
revision of accepted views on the war. He reveals the vital roles
performed by black people in both the British and Boer armies, and
shows how the regular and irregular participation of blacks
exercised an influence upon the course of war.
This answer book provides model answers for Numicon Pupil Book 4,
along with an introduction from Dr Tony Wing and a planning chart
to show the key learning covered. Numicon builds a deep
understanding of maths through a multi-sensory approach, developing
children's fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Numicon Pupil
Books are designed for children to use independently after whole
class teaching and learning has taken place. There is one Pupil
Book and Answer Book for each year group. These Key Stage 2
(Primary 4 to Primary 7) Pupil Books are divided into two sections:
Practice and Going Deeper. The Practice sections provide
independent practice to improve understanding and fluency, while
the Going Deeper sections provide open questions to challenge
pupils and deepen their conceptual understanding and develop
mastery. The four-page sections for each of the Activity Groups
follow the order of the long term plans in the Teaching Resource
Handbooks and reflect the content in the Focus activities, enabling
progress to be matched against the Milestones. The Numicon Pupil
Books have been tried and tested in the classroom.
