In this book Phil Lawler presents a wide and varied range of walks across the mountains of the Axarquia in Andalucia, which are near Malaga and the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. Many people will be surprised to find mountains rising to 2,000 metres within just a few kilometres of the coastline. Phil was one of the pioneering walking guides in this area from the late 1990s and he knows the area intimately. The book is intended primarily for the use of hill walkers rather than strollers, although the walks are helpfully graded for difficulty and include some easier ones. Hopefully there will be a choice for everybody. Some of the walks are in remote areas, to which access may need a sturdy car or four-wheel drive. This is the second in the series; the first covers the national park of the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain.
In this book Phil Lawler offers a wide selection of walks across the Picos de Europa in the majestic Cordillera Cantabrica, the Cantabrian Mountains, which run parallel with the Atlantic coastline in northern Spain. Phil has an intimate knowledge of this beautiful mountain range, as well as mountains in other parts of Spain. Many of the walks offer a choice of options and all are graded, with clear and concise information and useful tips. This handy and practical guide also indicates where you can find watering holes, as well as where to stay overnight and where to park your car. From an easy or moderate walk to a more strenuous and challenging ascent, there is something here for everyone. This is the first in a series of guides which will cover the Sierra Almijara and Tejeda in Andalucia, the Sierra de Guadarrama near Madrid, the natural park of Cazorla and the Ordesa area of the Pyrenees
An English-language guide to walking in the mountains to the north of Madrid, mainly but not exclusively within the National Park of the Sierra de Guadarrama. In this book, the third one in the Spanish Trails series, Phil Lawler and Tim Price present descriptions and sketch maps of 32 walks in the mountain ranges to the north of Madrid. It will be surprising to many people to find mountains rising to over 2,400 metres (alsmost 8,000 feet) within one hour of Spain's capital city. The mountains can in fact be clearly seen from the northern part of Madrid's city centre. The book contains a selection of easy, moderate and difficult walks in an approximately geographical sequence from the north-west of the city to the north-east. Details are included about how to access the walks, normally by car. Information is also provided about public transport (trains and buses) in the area. The walk descriptions are supplemented by sketch maps, which are intended to be used in conjunction with topographical maps, for which recommendations are given in the book. Other titles in the Spanish Trails series include the Picos de Europa (ISBN 978-0-9955797-0-5) and the Sierra Almijara and Tejeda (near Competa and Nerja) in the south (ISBN 978-0-9955791-1-2).
