Development of wearable sensors to measure sweat rate and conductivity (Paperback): Pietro Salvo Development of wearable sensors to measure sweat rate and conductivity (Paperback)
Pietro Salvo
R1,458 Discovery Miles 14 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Medicine - Biomedical Engineering, grade: none, University of Pisa (Faculty of Engineering), course: Bioengineering, language: English, abstract: Wearable sensors present a new frontier in the development of monitoring techniques. They are of great importance in sectors such as sport and healthcare as they permit the continuous monitoring of physiological and biological elements such as ECG and human sweat. Until recently this could only be carried out in specialized laboratories in the presence of cumbersome and often expensive devices. Sweat monitoring sensors integrated onto textile substrates are not only part of a new field of work but they also represent the first attempt to implement such an innovative idea on a system which will be worn directly on the body. The purpose of this dissertation is to present the design and creation of low cost, wearable, sweat rate and conductivity sensors integrated onto a textile.

Wearable sensors present a new frontier in the development of monitoring techniques. They are of great importance in sectors such as sports and healthcare, as they permit the continuous monitoring of physiological and biological elements, such as ECG and human sweat. Until recently, this could only be carried out in specialized laboratories in the presence of cumbersome, and usually, expensive devices. Sweat monitoring sensors integrated onto textile substrates are not only part of a new field of work but, they also represent the first attempt to implement such an innovative idea on a system which will be worn directly on the body. The objective of this book is to present possible designs and technologies of low cost wearable sweat rate and conductivity sensors integrated onto a textile. The first chapter deals with a preliminary introduction on sweat production and composition, and the applications of wearable devices. Further, the second chapter describes the conductivity sensor, i.e. the geometry, materials and the coupling which includes a temperature sensor for precise measurements are discussed. This is followed by a chapter on the sweat rate sensor, and the technologies employed to fabricate it. Sensors that are based on a) conductive yarns coated with hydrophilic polymers, b) conductive polymer fibres, c) hydrophilic polymers between conductive fabrics and d) humidity sensors are described in detail. Finally, the last chapter provides a study of sweat production in different body areas, the calibration procedure, and summarizes the results which arise from the tests on volunteers.

A Low-power Analogue SC-CMOS Filter suitable to implement the Wavelet Algorithm to analyse ECG signals in Pacemakers... A Low-power Analogue SC-CMOS Filter suitable to implement the Wavelet Algorithm to analyse ECG signals in Pacemakers (Paperback)
Pietro Salvo
R1,320 Discovery Miles 13 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Engineering - General, Basics, grade: -, University of Pisa, language: English, abstract: The detection of the QRS complex is very important because it is related to different heart dysfunctions. The wavelet transformation is an useful tool to characterize non-stationary signals such as the QRS complex because it gives good estimation of time and frequency localization. Starting from the mathematical expression of the Gaussian function, chosen as mother wavelet, after the Laplace Transform, the Pade Approximation will be used to arrive at a rational form of the function suitable for a filter implementation. It will be shown that a switched-capacitor (SC) realization is preferable instead of a direct implementation of the filter in Continuous Time in order to avoid high-value resistor elements. The optimization of the sensitivity, noise and dynamic range of the filter will be carried out following a State-Space methodology. The resulting circuit is a 7th order complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) SC filter.
