Two main areas of offshore activity are addressed in this book:
Site investigation on assessment; and Applications and foundation
engineering. The 37 contributions from a wide ranging group of
international experts, are resulting from the Offshore Site
Investigation and Foundation Behaviour Conference, London, U.K.,
September 1992. Adequate determination of site conditions can only
be achieved by the integrated approach of using geological,
geophysical and geotechnical data. Developments in data acquisition
techniques are illustrated through case histories in the section on
Geotechnical Sampling and Testing. In the section on Advanced
Interpretation Techniques and Integrated Interpretations the state
of the art of these topics is also illustrated by case histories. A
review of foundation behaviour is presented in the section on
Gravity Foundations, Foundation Performance Monitoring, Piling
Research and Design Criteria. These topics are illustrated in the
light of field experience and recent research, in particular that
involving full-scale tests and monitoring. This book provides many
illustrative figures and much pertinent information to exploration
and marine geophysicists, petroleum and offshore engineers and for
researchers working these fields.
Addressing a topic of major importance to the maintenance of world
food supplies, this reference identifies knowledge gaps, defines
priorities, and formulates recommendations for the improvement of
the rice-wheat farming system. The book reveals new systems of rice
intensification and management and illustrates the application of
no-till and conservation farming to the rice-wheat system. With
contributions from 65 international experts, and case studies from
India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, Sustainable Agriculture and
the International Rice-Wheat System focuses on seeding equipment
and residue management, weed control, water and nutrient
efficiency, and integrated pest management.
Throughout the history of warfare at sea, navigation has been an
important basic determinant of victory. Occasionally, new members
of the fraternity of the sea will look upon navigation as a chore
to be tolerated only as long as it takes to find someone else to
assume the responsibility. In my experience, such individuals never
make good naval officers. Commander Hobbs has succeeded in bringing
together the information and practical skills required for that
individual who would take the first step down the road toward
becoming a competent marine navigator. At the outset of this book,
the author stresses the necessity for safe navigation, but there is
another basic tenet of sea warfare that this book serves. The best
weapons system man has ever devised cannot function effectively
unless it knows where it is in relation to the real world, where it
is in relation to the enemy, and where the enemy is in relation to
the real world. Not all defeats can be attributed to this lack of
information, but no victories have been won by those who did not
know where they were.
Land conversion, climate change and species invasions are
contributing to the widespread emergence of novel ecosystems, which
demand a shift in how we think about traditional approaches to
conservation, restoration and environmental management. They are
novel because they exist without historical precedents and are
self-sustaining. Traditional approaches emphasizing native species
and historical continuity are challenged by novel ecosystems that
deliver critical ecosystems services or are simply immune to
practical restorative efforts. Some fear that, by raising the issue
of novel ecosystems, we are simply paving the way for a more
"laissez-faire" attitude to conservation and restoration.
Regardless of the range of views and perceptions about novel
ecosystems, their existence is becoming ever more obvious and
prevalent in today's rapidly changing world. In this first
comprehensive volume to look at the ecological, social, cultural,
ethical and policy dimensions of novel ecosystems, the authors
argue these altered systems are overdue for careful analysis and
that we need to figure out how to intervene in them responsibly.
This book brings together researchers from a range of disciplines
together with practitioners and policy makers to explore the
questions surrounding novel ecosystems. It includes chapters on key
concepts and methodologies for deciding when and how to intervene
in systems, as well as a rich collection of case studies and
perspective pieces. It will be a valuable resource for researchers,
managers and policy makers interested in the question of how
humanity manages and restores ecosystems in a rapidly changing
world.A companion website with additional resources is available at

Commonsense psychology refers to the implicit theories that we all
use to make sense of people's behavior in terms of their beliefs,
goals, plans, and emotions. These are also the theories we employ
when we anthropomorphize complex machines and computers as if they
had humanlike mental lives. In order to successfully cooperate and
communicate with people, these theories will need to be represented
explicitly in future artificial intelligence systems. This book
provides a large-scale logical formalization of commonsense
psychology in support of humanlike artificial intelligence. It uses
formal logic to encode the deep lexical semantics of the full
breadth of psychological words and phrases, providing fourteen
hundred axioms of first-order logic organized into twenty-nine
commonsense psychology theories and sixteen background theories.
This in-depth exploration of human commonsense reasoning for
artificial intelligence researchers, linguists, and cognitive and
social psychologists will serve as a foundation for the development
of humanlike artificial intelligence.

The Pharisees were passionate about being faithful to God, but they
became misguided. The author shares his unsettling discovery of
twelve pharisaic tendencies in his own life, which are also common
in Christianity today. He shows that those of us who are the most
passionate about following God faithfully are the most vulnerable
to the Pharisees' errors. These problems hinder our journey into
grace and intimacy with Christ. They cause unbelievers to distrust
us and become disillusioned with Christianity. In his easy-to-read,
practical teaching style, the author examines the passages where
Jesus confronted the Pharisees and makes thought-provoking
observations regarding our Christian faith and churches today.
Looking into the mirror of Scripture, he helps us identify and
overcome these Pharisaic errors, grow deeper in our relationship
with Christ, and nurture a faith that becomes contagious to others
around us. This book includes practical insights into personal
spiritual development as well as ministry. It helps to distinguish
between church problems and real Christianity as Jesus intended it
to be. Includes study guide, discussion questions, and journal
pages for personal or small group use. "I wonder if there is a
little Pharisee in all of us? This book challenged me to look in
the mirror and reevaluate my relationship with Christ." - Mark
Batterson, pastor and author of "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy
Day" and "Wild Goose Chase." "I found the book compelling and
challenging... The book will make you think." - Dr. David Little,
mission board president. ..".an authentic, soul-searching,
conversational style that allows the reader to see how this author
humbly applies what he has discovered.... His 'walls and fences'
vividly illustrate Phariseeism in a unique and unforgettable
way.... When I was finished reading, I loved Jesus more and could
not help but worship " - Dr. Bob Eckler, pastor and Christian
counselor.

Cognitive science, with its guiding metaphor of the mind as a
computer, has made substantial progress towards an understanding of
how people comprehend and produce discourse. The essays in this
book apply these insights to problems in the interpretation of
literature. The first two chapters present the outline of a
cognitive theory of discourse and use it to shed light on some
classic issues in literary theory, including the roles of the
author's intention and the reader's brief systems in the meaning of
a literary work. The next three chapters are more technical
investigations of discourse interpretation, metaphor, and discourse
coherence. The framework developed is then used in the examination
of two literary works, a sonnet by Milton and the novella Sylvie by
Gerard de Nerval.
