Global manufacturing has been altered by the emergence of a new
approach to production which differs radically from the principles
of mass production. This approach has been characterised by
successful manufacturers in Asia and the West who have engaged in a
continuous process to improve quality, process productivity and
cost performance. The authors of Beyond Quality argue that many of
the methods used by these new firms are equally suitable for
manufacturers in developing countries and the transition economies
of eastern and Central Europe. Using case study material from Latin
America, Africa and Central Europe, the authors demonstrate that it
is the skill and organization of people - rather than sophisticated
equipment - which determines growth in productivity and product
quality. These new forms of improvement are not dependent on
economies of scale and so provide small producers with the
flexibility to compete effectively against mass producers.

Human and organizational factors have a substantial impact on the
performance of planning and scheduling processes. Despite
widespread and advanced decision support systems, human decision
makers are still crucial to improve the operational performance in
manufacturing industries. In this text, the state of the art in
this area is discussed by experts from a wide variety of
engineering and social science disciplines. Moreover, recent
results from collaborative studies and a number of field cases are
presented. The text is targeted at researchers and graduate
students, but is also particularly useful for managers,
consultants, and system developers to better understand how human
performance can be advanced.
Musical references, allusions to music, and music stage directions
abound in Shakespeare, ranging from simple trumpet flourishes to
sophisticated, philosophical allegory. Music in Shakespeare: A
Dictionary - the first of its kind - identifies all musical terms
found in the Shakespeare canon. An A-Z of over 300 entries includes
a definition of each musical term in its historical and theoretical
context, and explores the extent of Shakespeare's use of musical
imagery across the full range of his dramatic and poetic work.
Music in Shakespeare: A Dictionary also analyses the usage of
musical instruments and sound effects on the Shakespearean stage,
providing descriptions of the instruments employed in the
Elizabethan and Jacobean theatres. This is a comprehensive
reference guide for scholars and students with interests ranging
from the thematic and allegorical relevance of music in
Shakespeare's works to the history of performance. It is also aimed
at the growing number of directors and actors concerned with
recovering the staging conditions of the early modern theatre.
guides to the principal subject-areas covered by the plays and
poetry of Shakespeare. The entries in the Dictionaries provide
readers with a self-contained body of information about the topic
under discussion, its occurrence and significance in Shakespeare's
works, and its contemporary meanings. Entries range from a few
lines in length to mini-essays, upward of 1000 words providing the
opportunity to explore important literary of historical concept or
idea in depth. Comprehensive bibliographies are also provided.
Residential segregation is a key issue for good governance in
Latin American cities. The isolation of people of different social
classes or ethnicities has potential political and social
consequences, including differential access to and quality of
education, health and other services. This volume uses the recent
availability of geo-coded census data and techniques of spatial
analysis to conduct the first detailed comparative examination of
residential segregation in six major Latin American metropolises,
with Austin, Texas, as a US comparison. It demonstrates the high
degree of residential segregation of contemporary Latin American
cities and discusses implications for the welfare of urban
residents.
This is the second volume in the series that focuses on the
International Objective Measurement Workshops and the work of Georg
Rasch. In the area of practice, two major clusters of new work are
reported in this volume: a national pilot study of
computer-adaptive testing in professional licensure and
applications of a type of Rasch model called the Facet Model.
It is widely acknowledged that the hit franchise Game of Thrones is
based on the Wars of the Roses, a bloody fifteenth-century civil
war between feuding English families. In this book, Jeffrey R.
Wilson shows how that connection was mediated by Shakespeare, and
how a knowledge of the Shakespearean context enriches our
understanding of the literary elements of Game of Thrones. On the
one hand, Shakespeare influenced Game of Thrones indirectly because
his history plays significantly shaped the way the Wars of the
Roses are now remembered, including the modern histories and
historical fictions George R.R. Martin drew upon. On the other,
Game of Thrones also responds to Shakespeare’s first tetralogy
directly by adapting several of its literary strategies (such as
shifting perspectives, mixed genres, and metatheater) and tropes
(including the stigmatized protagonist and the prince who was
promised). Presenting new interviews with the Game of Thrones cast,
and comparing contextual circumstances of composition—such as
collaborative authorship and political currents—this book also
lodges a series of provocations about writing and acting for the
stage in the Elizabethan age and for the screen in the twenty-first
century. An essential read for fans of the franchise, as well as
students and academics looking at Shakespeare and Renaissance
literature in the context of modern media.
The chapters in this new volume describe original research
concerned with both theory and practice in measurement. The
material originated in presentations made at a conference that
brings together practicing professionals and theoreticians in
diverse areas of measurement and related fields. The first group of
papers embody the most important aspect of objective measurement -
its application to diverse contexts and purposes. The examples
included concentrate on two types of situations: performance
assessment and criterion-referenced testing. The specific contexts
range from writing assessment, to assessment of the professional
development of teachers, to high school physics. The second group
of papers are focused on an area of great importance in assessment
today: the modeling of raters and judges in an assessment context.
The volume concludes with papers that explore the domain of theory
in measurement, characterized by an innovative approach to
model-building. Even though they are categorized as theory papers,
most are based on the complicated and interesting problems that
arise in quite specific contexts. As such, they represent some of
the most original and exciting developments in the field of
measurement today ranging from multidimensional measurement to
graph theory and clustering techniques. This volume presents
original research concerned with the practice of measurement, and
the theory of measurement. The words in the title, objective
measurement indicate that the chapters are all related to a
particular approach to the philosophy and practice of measurement.
By objective measurement, we mean that, in a situation where a
certain class of stimuli (for example, items) are used to measure
certain individuals. The chapters in this book originated in
presentations made at the International Objective Measurement
Workshop (IOMW) devoted to exploring the interface between theory
and practice in measurement. Based on the complicated and
interesting problems that arise in quite specific contexts, they
represent some of the most original and exciting developments in
the field of measurement today.
"This is a book with twenty-five gems. The meditations found within
these pages provide fresh insight into God's Word. Take time to
prayerfully read one gem from this book as you begin your day, or
during a break, while waiting for something or someone, or when
opening your Bible study class. You will find yourself refreshed,
renewed, revived, delivered, set free, and transformed These
meditations from Rev. Wilson, a true visionary for our time, will
show you that when a believer walks with Christ, a flash of the
world eternal swallows up the world of the here and now. It is in
these moments that the believer can celebrate and rejoice in what
is to come.. This book will enrich your life regardless of who you
are, where you have come from, where you have been, or what you
have done. The nuggets in these pages will provide you with
spiritual enlightenment that tells you that we serve a God who is
able to create new things even out of our old conditions." - from
the Foreword by Rev. Dr. Ruby Wilson, Safe Haven United Church of
Christ, New York
Current events continually challenge our relationships, trouble
our minds, and cause us to question our faith. But it's wonderful
to know that the Word of God is available to us in times of
trouble. We have a blessed assurance that no matter how hard life
may seem, there is a God whose love transcends both time and space.
"Meditations for Tough and Testing Times" is full of messages that
provide strength for when life brings more adversity than we think
we can handle. These thoughtful contemplations address our struggle
with these uncertain times and our need to connect with God. We are
reminded that this connection is best achieved through God's Word
as revealed to us by the Bible and God's Son, Jesus Christ. May God
renew your faith and restore your joy as you reflect on the
treasures in "Meditations for Tough and Testing Times."
"Why Europe Is Lesbian and Gay Friendly (and Why America Never Will
Be)" examines the differences in politics, policy, and culture in
leading Western democracies and offers an explanation as to why
lesbian and gay citizens in Europe reap more benefits of equality.
This analysis of the political economy of care calls attention to
the ways in which care is negotiated by various investors (the
state, families, individuals, and the faith-based voluntary sector)
and the power dynamics of this negotiation.
Historically, Christian churches have been leading primary
investors in care, providing a direct safety net for children and
the elderly. Despite European secularization, the involvement of
the Christian church elites in both the provision of service and
the setting of the values frame for welfare cannot be
underestimated. The historical involvement of Christian churches is
unique in each country, but one common factor is the normative
interpretation of the family. The role of Christian values from
left-leaning social justice, Reformed Protestant individualism, or
social conservatism in relation to the political economy of care
gives a distinctive flavor to questions about under what
circumstances policymakers are compelled, or not, to expand
policies to include lesbian and gay citizens."
In 2011, when I left the corporate banking industry, I decided to
write a memoir, detailing true story events that took place in
mines as well as in my family's life both back home in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, and here in Birmingham, Alabama. With the help of God
our father, who gave me the courage and the strength to complete
this novel, Mothers Are Precious Keys of Life. As a business
entrepreneur, I plan on introducing a new line of copyright
products from my book title, such as a line of T-shirts and home
plaques that my customers can purchase personally from me. You can
look me up on my Facebook page under Ms. Beverly R. Wilson for a
request for products or e-mail me at [email protected] for more
details on my future online store. I hope my readers will all be
touched by these inspirational stories.
This monograph provides a concise point of research topics and
reference for modeling correlated response data with time-dependent
covariates, and longitudinal data for the analysis of
population-averaged models, highlighting methods by a variety of
pioneering scholars. While the models presented in the volume are
applied to health and health-related data, they can be used to
analyze any kind of data that contain covariates that change over
time. The included data are analyzed with the use of both R and
SAS, and the data and computing programs are provided to readers so
that they can replicate and implement covered methods. It is an
excellent resource for scholars of both computational and
methodological statistics and biostatistics, particularly in the
applied areas of health.
This Festschrift honors George Samuel Fishman, one of the founders
of the eld of computer simulation and a leader of the disciplines
of operations research and the management sciences for the past ve
decades, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. The papers in
this volume span the theory, methodology, and application of
computer simulation. The lead article is appropriately titled
"George Fishman's Professional Career." In this article we discuss
George's contributions to operations research and the m- agement
sciences, with special emphasis on his role in the advancement of
the eld of simulation since the 1960s. We also include a brief
personal biography together with comments by several individuals
about the extraordinary effect that George has had on all his
students, colleagues, and friends. Thesecondarticle,
titled"AConversationwithGeorgeFishman,"isthetranscript of an
extended interview with George that we conducted in October 2007.
In the article titled "Computer Intensive Statistical Model
Building," Russell Cheng studies resampling methods for building
parsimonious multiple linear regr- sion models so as to represent
accurately the behavior of the dependent variable in terms of the
smallest possible subset of explanatory (independent) variables.
The author shows how bootstrap resampling can be used not only for
rapid identi cation of good models but also for ef cient comparison
of competing models.
This open access volume presents a comprehensive account of all
aspects of biological invasions in South Africa, where research has
been conducted over more than three decades, and where bold
initiatives have been implemented in attempts to control invasions
and to reduce their ecological, economic and social effects. It
covers a broad range of themes, including history, policy
development and implementation, the status of invasions of animals
and plants in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments, the
development of a robust ecological theory around biological
invasions, the effectiveness of management interventions, and
scenarios for the future. The South African situation stands out
because of the remarkable diversity of the country, and the wide
range of problems encountered in its varied ecosystems, which has
resulted in a disproportionate investment into both research and
management. The South African experience holds many lessons for
other parts of the world, and this book should be of immense value
to researchers, students, managers, and policy-makers who deal with
biological invasions and ecosystem management and conservation in
most other regions.
Clustering as an economic policy concern has become increasingly
fashionable. The authors of this book shed light on this subject of
which there remains remarkably little understanding, and even less
agreement, regarding what clusters are, what they require for
success and what impacts they are likely to have in different
contexts, locally, nationally and globally. Clusters and
Globalisation brings together scholars with different perspectives
and theoretical groundings, and from different disciplines, to
consider conceptual arguments and case study material. In doing so
the volume identifies key characteristics and requirements of the
forms of cluster that are especially significant for the attainment
of economic success in a globalising world. This unique critical
analysis of clusters in the framework of globalisation will
strongly appeal to students and academics with an interest in
economic development, public policy and globalisation. The book
will also be of great interest to researchers in policy agencies
concerned with local economic development and the design of cluster
policies.
