The Spanish novella La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus
fortunas y adversidadeswas published anonymously in Alcala de
Henares, Burgos and Antwerp in 1554. It is most famous as the book
establishing the style of the picaresque satirical novel. -- .
Many students of Spanish literature will have encountered some of
Gongora's poems. No Spanish poet is grater or more rewarding, but
few are as difficult for the beginner. His style is a habit of
mind: radically metaphorical, elliptical, witty, highly sensuous,
transmuting the world of the sense into a world of the spirit. To
read him, one has to learn these characteristic habits and perform
athletic mental feats as one goes along. It would be too easy to
say that Professor Jones has made Gongora 'easy'; but he has
certainly made him more accessible. A long introduction briefly
deals with Gongora's life, and then gives solid critical guidance
to the poems. It includes passages of sustained and detailed
analysis which explain how characteristic poems 'work' and it
incorporates original insights and research. The notes are full and
are designed to help the reader through the difficulties by
offering critical comment.
Cursed by her grandmother and trapped in domestic violence in 1960s
Britain, Evelyn must find a way to protect her five young
daughters. Aware that her firstborn, Kim, is doomed to repeat her
own disastrous life choices, Evelyn places her in the care of one
of her admirers to protect her from her fate. Meanwhile, her
daughter Bess carries a deep-rooted sense of shame and guilt that
her birth nearly killed her beloved mother. Subjected to sexual
abuse, she tries to make sense of her feelings and her place within
the secretive family she grows up in, desperately seeking love and
recognition from her mother. Tormented by sibling rivalry, Bess
turns to story writing to make sense of her world. Are our lives a
result of the programming we unconsciously receive from our parents
and their parents before them, or can the patterns be changed?
