Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Courant and Friedrich's classical treatise was first published in
1948 and tThe basic research for it took place during World War II.
However, many aspects make the book just as interesting as a text
and a reference today. It treats the dynamics of compressible
fluids in mathematical form, and attempts to present a systematic
theory of nonlinear wave propagation, particularly in relation to
gas dynamics. Written in the form of an advanced textbook, it
should appeal to engineers, physicists and mathematicians alike.
The Springer edition of this book is an unchanged reprint of
Courant and Friedrich's classical treatise which was first
published in 1948. The basic research for it took place during
World War II, but there are many aspects which still make the book
interesting as a text and as a reference. It treats basic aspects
of the dynamics of compressible fluids in mathematical form, and
attempts to present a systematic theory of nonlinear wave
propagation, particularly in relation to gas dynamics. Written in
the form of an advanced textbook, it accounts for classical as well
as some fairly recent developments. The authors intend their
audience to be engineers, physicists and mathematicians alike.
From the reviews: "These books (Introduction to Calculus and Analysis Vol. I/II) are very well written. The mathematics are rigorous but the many examples that are given and the applications that are treated make the books extremely readable and the arguments easy to understand. These books are ideally suited for an undergraduate calculus course. Each chapter is followed by a number of interesting exercises. More difficult parts are marked with an asterisk. There are many illuminating figures...Of interest to students, mathematicians, scientists and engineers. Even more than that."Newsletter on Computational and Applied Mathematics, 1991"...one of the best textbooks introducing several generations of mathematicians to higher mathematics. ... This excellent book is highly recommended both to instructors and students." Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum, 1991

From the Preface: (...) The book is addressed to students on various levels, to mathematicians, scientists, engineers. It does not pretend to make the subject easy by glossing over difficulties, but rather tries to help the genuinely interested reader by throwing light on the interconnections and purposes of the whole. Instead of obstructing the access to the wealth of facts by lengthy discussions of a fundamental nature we have sometimes postponed such discussions to appendices in the various chapters. Numerous examples and problems are given at the end of various chapters. Some are challenging, some are even difficult; most of them supplement the material in the text.
"A lucid representation of the fundamental concepts and methods of the whole field of mathematics. It is an easily understandable introduction for the layman and helps to give the mathematical student a general view of the basic principles and methods."--Albert Einstein (on the first edition) For more than two thousand years a familiarity with mathematics has been regarded as an indispensable part of the intellectual equipment of every cultured person. Today, unfortunately, the traditional place of mathematics in education is in grave danger. The teaching and learning of mathematics has degenerated into the realm of rote memorization, the outcome of which leads to satisfactory formal ability but not to real understanding or greater intellectual independence. This new edition of Richard Courant's and Herbert Robbins's classic work seeks to address this problem. Its goal is to put the meaning back into mathematics. Written for beginners and scholars, for students and teachers, for philosophers and engineers, What is Mathematics?, Second Edition is a sparkling collection of mathematical gems that offers an entertaining and accessible portrait of the mathematical world. Covering everything from natural numbers and the number system to geometrical constructions and projective geometry, from topology and calculus to matters of principle and the Continuum Hypothesis, this fascinating survey allows readers to delve into mathematics as an organic whole rather than an empty drill in problem solving. With chapters largely independent of one another and sections that lead upward from basic to more advanced discussions, readers can easily pick and choose areas of particular interest without impairing their understanding of subsequent parts. Brought up to date with a new chapter by Ian Stewart, What is Mathematics, Second Edition offers new insights into recent mathematical developments and describes proofs of the Four-Color Theorem and Fermat's Last Theorem, problems that were still open when Courant and Robbins wrote this masterpiece, but ones that have since been solved. Formal mathematics is like spelling and grammar: a matter of the correct application of local rules. Meaningful mathematics is like journalism: it tells an interesting story. But unlike some journalism, the story has to be true. The best mathematics is like literature: it brings a story to life before your eyes and involves you in it, intellectually and emotionally. What is Mathematics is a marvelously literate story: it opens a window onto the world of mathematics for anyone interested to view.
In diesem Buch, erstmals 1924 bzw.
Mathematik grundlegende neue Erkenntnisse gewann.
darstellen konnte.
Darstellung zweier Meister ihres Faches erfreuen.
in Einzelheiten.
Veranderlichen in mancher Hinsicht weiter ent- wickelt worden,
beeeintrachtigen.
The lecture, emphasizing the need for national and international
scien tific cooperation concerned mainly the ways in which in the
present era the Unites States are trying to cope with a number of
basic problems in conducting research on a broad front. Some of
these all pervading problems are: How can the essentially
individualistic character of productive creation be reconciled with
the ever increasing compelling need to cooperate in teams during
rigid office hours? - How can one keep the extremely expensive
machinerie such as Electronic computers, Reactors, Synchrotrons,
Research Ships etc. in their roles as tools, not as masters of
research activities? - What is the true relationship between "pure"
and "applied" research? - What should the interaction between
research and teaching be? - Above all: What can be done about the
overriding manpowerproblem? - How does one reconcile the need for
freedom with that for planning, the material depen dence with
intellectual independence? Against an historical background the
lecture indicated how during the time since the last war these
problems are beeing attacked in the United States by various
agencies which grew organically, not in a rigid precon ceived
pattern. The role of seemingly military sponsors of research and
training was discussed, in particular the famous Office of Naval
Research and the Atomic Energy Commission; the ever increasing
importance of the National Science Foundation was described. Also
the role of private foun dations was mentioned."
