Robert Hayden was one of the most important American poets of the
twentieth century. He left behind an exquisite body of work,
collected in this definitive edition, including A Ballad of
Remembrance, Words in the Mourning Time, The Night-Blooming Cereus,
Angle of Ascent, and American Journal, which was nominated for a
National Book Award. Also included is an introduction by American
poet Reginald Dwayne Betts, as well as an afterword by Arnold
Rampersad that provides a critical and historical context. In
Hayden s work the actualities of history and culture became the
launching places for flights of imagination and intelligence. His
voice characterized by musical diction and an exquisite feeling for
the formality of pattern is a seminal one in American life and
literature."
Migrations molded Balkan societies, and were very common in
multiethnic empires. In the modern era, before World War I,
economic factors forced millions of people to migrate overseas, as
guest workers in the 1960s and 70s, and as economic migrants
thereafter. In addition, many people had to leave their homes as
political refugees or as victims of ethnic cleansing. This volume,
the first part of a selection of conference papers, focuses on
historical and cultural aspects of migration in, from, and to
Southeastern Europe.
This book describes how me as the writer over a 6 month period in
April 2011 miss out on running the London marathon through injury
only to be given an amazing opportunity to get a place in the new
York marathon. My story describes how as an individual who works as
an IT consultant 5 days a week, leading a normal life, socially and
the hard effort I put in over 6 months to achieve my goal of
completing a marathon in under 4 hrs. I describe my training plan,
diet, running gear, watch, alcohol intake during training, my
goals, my mindset and beliefs. The book provides accurate and
detailed run times taken from my training plan with average pace,
calories burnt etc. The summary of this book is anybody can achieve
their goal by putting their mind to it.
In his new poems, as before, but with a new mixture of modes,
Hayden takes up, celebrates, and contends with the history of his
people. He is involved with his Black Americanness, without being
confined by it. The famous story elements can be found here but
above all a renewed delight in the revelatory possibilities of the
languages. In addition to the new poems, all the best of Hayden s
earlier work is here, including much that has for too long been
unavailable."
