The text begins with a brief English ancestry of the Lawrences. The
English immigrant ancestor, John Lawrence arrived in Massachusetts
c.1635. By 1662 he was located in Groton, Massachusetts, with his
first wife, Elizabeth. Major Samuel Lawrence is the great-great
grandson of John Lawrence and was born in Groton in 1754. His
descendants are carried down for three generations making a total
of eight generations described through detailed biographical
notices of prominent family members. The genealogy ends at the
beginning of the twentieth century. The appendices cover the grant
of crest, will extracts, baptisms, family Bible records and
mortgage records, along with a story by Mary Fosdick, A Minute-Man.
Allied families include: Amory, Appleton, Brooks, Cunningham,
Derby, Fosdick, and Foster. Data on these families has been drawn
from a diverse collection of sources including: circulars, personal
letters, printed memoirs, biographical publications, college class
reports; state, municipal, church, and probate records; county and
town histories; and, genealogies and family registers. A full-name
index adds to the value of this work.
