WOMEN OF VALUE - Feminist Essays on the History of Women in Economics (Hardcover): Mary A. Dimand, Robert W. Dimand, Evelyn L.... WOMEN OF VALUE - Feminist Essays on the History of Women in Economics (Hardcover)
Mary A. Dimand, Robert W. Dimand, Evelyn L. Forget
R3,645 Discovery Miles 36 450 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Women economists rarely feature in most textbooks on the history of economic thought before 1960, despite the many articles and theses produced by them in the period. Why is their work so little studied? What did they write about? Who listened to them, supported them or hindered them?Women of Value seeks to better understand the lives and work of the women who helped to build the economics profession. A number of these papers focus on the sociology of the economics discipline including the failure to cite the work of women economists, graduate work by women and the personal networks among women economists in the pre-war period. It also includes a personal memoir of the experience of one female graduate student studying in the 1930s. Later papers focus on specific women economists including Jane Marcet, Harriet Martineau, Harriet Taylor, Barbara Bodichon, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Mary Paley Marshall. The final chapter in the book looks at two studies of the role of women in industry carried out in the early twentieth century. Women of Value reassesses the role of women economists by using biographical research to augment the standard tools of historical and bibliographical work. Combining intellectual rigour with biographical insights into the lives and experience of many determined and courageous women economists, this volume will be welcomed by historians of economic thought, feminist economists and and the those with an interest in women's history.

Routledge Handbook of the History of Women's Economic Thought (Paperback): Kirsten Madden, Robert W. Dimand Routledge Handbook of the History of Women's Economic Thought (Paperback)
Kirsten Madden, Robert W. Dimand
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The marginalization of women in economics has a history as long as the discipline itself. Throughout the history of economics, women contributed substantial novel ideas, methods of inquiry, and analytical insights, with much of this discounted, ignored, or shifted into alternative disciplines and writing outlets. This handbook presents new and much-needed analytical research of women's contributions in the history of economic thought, focusing primarily on the period from the 1770s into the beginning of the 21st century. Chapters address the institutional, sociological and historical factors that have influenced women economists' thinking, and explore women's contributions to economic analysis, method, policies and debates. Coverage is international, moving beyond Europe and the US into the Arab world, China, India, Japan, Latin America, Russia and the Soviet Union, and sub-Saharan Africa. This new global perspective adds depth as well as scope to our understanding of women's contribution to the history of economic thought. The book offers crucial new insights into previously underexplored work by women in the history of economic thought, and will prove to be a seminal volume with relevance beyond that field, into women's studies, sociology, and history.

The History Of Game Theory, Volume 1 - From the Beginnings to 1945 (Hardcover, New): Mary Ann Dimand, Robert W. Dimand The History Of Game Theory, Volume 1 - From the Beginnings to 1945 (Hardcover, New)
Mary Ann Dimand, Robert W. Dimand
R5,518 Discovery Miles 55 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Game Theory--the formal modelling of conflict and cooperation--first emerged as a recognized field with the publication of John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern's "Theory of Games and Economic Behaviour" in 1944. Since then, game-theoretic thinking about choice of strategies and the interdependence of people's actions has influenced all the social sciences. However, little is known about the history of the theory of strategic games "prior" to this publication.
In this volume, the history of strategic games--from its origins up to 1945--is traced through the work of 19th Century economists such as Cournot and Edgeworth; voting theorists, including Lewis Carroll; conflict theorists Richardson and Lanchester; probabilists such as Bertrand, Borel, and Ville; and later economists, notably Stackelberg and Zeuthen. This authoritative account of the history of game theory concludes with a historical perspective on the achievement of von Neumann and Morgenstern and an appraisal of the reception of their book.

Irving Fisher (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Robert W. Dimand Irving Fisher (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Robert W. Dimand
R3,121 Discovery Miles 31 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Acclaimed by Joseph Schumpeter as 'The greatest economist the United States has ever produced', this book examines the life and work of American economist and statistician Irving Fisher (1867-1947). Fisher's reputation suffered for decades after his incorrect predictions for the stock market in October 1929 and the impact of Keynesian macroeconomics, but the importance of his work came to be recognized through the advocacy of many prestigious scholars including Milton Friedman, Hyman Minsky and James Tobin. With pivotal contributions including his Debt-Deflation Theory, Fisher Diagram and Ideal Index Number, his research in neoclassical economics influenced policymaking in his own day as well as during the recent financial crisis. This volume will be of interest to all those interested in the twentieth century transformation of economics.

Robert W. Dimand, Harald Hagemann
R8,376 Discovery Miles 83 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The most influential and controversial economist of the twentieth century, John Maynard Keynes was the leading founder of modern macroeconomics, and was also an important historical figure as a critic of the Versailles Peace Treaty after World War I and an architect of the Bretton Woods international monetary system after World War II.
