The DFE is committed to the concept of school-based training for
ITT students. The use of schoolteachers as the school-based expert
to assist in the training of the student has given rise to the
re-introduction, after 100 years, of the mentor. The use of mentors
in the secondary schools has already started with students
currently spending more than 60 per cent of their training in the
classroom. There are plans to expand this into the primary sector.
In preparation for this move there are currently several
experimental schemes in progress. The biggest of these is based at
Beford known as the TEAM project funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
The need for a definitive model of the primary mentor is urgent and
the members of the TEAM (Teacher Education and Mentorship) are
closest to that objective. The book brings together the research
findings of the project, each chapter being written by a course
team member.
