David S. Stein, Hilda R Glazer, Constance Wanstreet
R5,784 Discovery Miles 57 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on teaching and learning in distance learning virtual universities. The emergence of distance learning virtual universities has provided increased opportunities for adult learners to obtain higher education degrees in a remote teaching-learning environment. During the pandemic, for-profit online learning institutions experienced increases in enrollment while face-to-face institutions experienced decreasing enrollments. Increasing learner enrollments, increasing numbers of courses delivered, and an increasingly competitive environment forces influence how higher education institutions will respond to the anticipated growth in distance learning. Higher education accreditation bodies have legitimized distance learning virtual universities as sites for adult learners, especially part-time adult learners, and made distance education an accepted way to receive a higher education degree. Virtual universities are challenging the supremacy of the land-based university as the only legitimate form of educational delivery. However, little has been published concerning how virtual universities have addressed access, availability, quality, retention, and better life opportunities. As the educational marketplace becomes predominately adult-dominated and higher education institutions compete for adult enrollment, understanding how virtual distance learning institutions are changing the higher education landscape will be an increasingly important issue. This book explores, describes, and questions the role of these institutions in the higher education landscape. Can for-profit education (education as a commodity) also be high quality and serve a societal function of providing adult learners access and opportunity? When critiquing the value and place of the for-profit university, one must ask, is the concern for the profit motive justified, or is it a move by traditional universities to reduce the influence of the virtual university? For-profit distance learning institutions were initially developed to provide access to higher education for adult learners who may experience barriers to attending a traditional university and, as such, tend to address better the needs of working adult learners. These institutions provided increased accessibility and availability for learners who may not otherwise pursue higher education. It is also important to note that distance education is not exclusive to for-profit universities. However, little is known about how learners learn and how teachers teach in these institutions. While sometimes neglected in publications and research, these institutions have been and continue to be disruptive while driving innovations in distance education.

R3,040 Discovery Miles 30 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The psychiatric view of homosexuality has undergone a fascinating evo lution in recent years. This includes not only the change from viewing homosexuality as a diagnosable illness, as opposed to an alternative life style, but also the development of considerable professional concern for providing appropriate mental health services to this previously under served minority community. There has been an increasing recognition of the need for comprehensive services including, but not limited to, counseling, individual psychotherapy, and couples therapy. This book is written for the practicing clinician, and offers a compre hensive survey of the important clinical issues involved in the counsel ing and psychotherapy of gay men and lesbian women. It is an extraor dinarily practical book and its breadth and depth make it appropriate for both the novice and the experienced therapist. SHERWYN M. WOODS Series Editor ix Preface We hear our mentors but do not often heed them. Freud's supportive, nonjudgmental approach to homosexuality provided an ambience with in which discoveries could be made, that is, the discovery that homosex uality was not a disease of mental degeneration and that sexuality, in the sense of a fundamental human propensity to find pleasure in social and physical attachments, was at its root directed to both sexes. The ad herence to a nonjudgmental approach was short-lived, suffered repres sion by homophobic defenses, and scientific zeal was directed toward "cure" rather than comprehension of the homosexual state."

Workforce Transitions from the Profit to the Nonprofit Sector (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Tobie S. Stein Workforce Transitions from the Profit to the Nonprofit Sector (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Tobie S. Stein
R2,995 Discovery Miles 29 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last 20 years, the number of professional managers displaced from US corporate jobs has increased dramatically. This has coincided with the rapid expansion of employment in the US nonprofit sector; a sector that has a high proportion of managerial and professional workers among its employees.
Workforce Transitions from the Profit to the Nonprofit Sector examines the career sequences of dislocated white-collar corporate managers who want to move to the nonprofit sector. It highlights the managers' motivations, the structural barriers which prevented them from making the transition, and the methods of penetrating the barriers. It uncovers the reasons why some corporate managers are able to make the transition and why others do not. Finally, it presents the methods of adaptation that were utilized in their new environments.
This volume will be of interest to human resource managers in the profit and nonprofit sectors, sociologists, occupational researchers, and organizational psychologists.

Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Performing Arts Workforce (Paperback): Tobie S. Stein Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Performing Arts Workforce (Paperback)
Tobie S. Stein
R1,375 Discovery Miles 13 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Performing Arts Workforce examines the systemic and institutional barriers and individual biases that continue to perpetuate a predominately White nonprofit performing arts workforce in the United States. Workforce diversity, for purposes of this book, is defined as racial and ethnic diversity among workforce participants and stakeholders in the performing arts, including employees, artists, board members, funders, donors, educators, audience, and community members. The research explicitly uncovers the sociological and psychological reasons for inequitable workforce policies and practices within the historically White nonprofit performing arts sector, and provides examples of the ways in which transformative leaders, sharing a multiplicity of cultural backgrounds, can collaboratively and collectively create and produce a culturally plural community-centered workforce in the performing arts.

Distributive Justice and Disability - Utilitarianism against Egalitarianism (Hardcover): Mark S. Stein Distributive Justice and Disability - Utilitarianism against Egalitarianism (Hardcover)
Mark S. Stein
R2,048 Discovery Miles 20 480 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Theories of distributive justice are most severely tested in the area of disability. In this book, Mark Stein argues that utilitarianism performs better than egalitarian theories in this area: whereas egalitarian theories help the disabled either too little or too much, utilitarianism achieves the proper balance by placing resources where they will do the most good.
Stein offers what may be the broadest critique of egalitarian theory from a utilitarian perspective. He addresses the work of egalitarian theorists John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, Amartya Sen, Bruce Ackerman, Martha Nussbaum, Norman Daniels, Philippe Van Parijs, and others. Stein claims that egalitarians are often driven to borrow elements of utilitarianism in order to make their theories at all plausible.
The book concludes with an acknowledgment that both utilitarians and egalitarians face problems in the distribution of life-saving medical resources. Stein advocates a version of utilitarianism that would distribute life-saving resources based on life expectancy, not quality of life. Egalitarian theories, he argues, ignore life expectancy and so are again found wanting.
"Distributive Justice and Disability "is a powerful and engaging book that helps to reframe the debate between egalitarian and utilitarian thinkers.

Energy Problem, The (Hardcover): Richard S. Stein, Joseph Powers Energy Problem, The (Hardcover)
Richard S. Stein, Joseph Powers
R1,111 Discovery Miles 11 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Most scientists now believe that carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere are rapidly increasing, and that emissions from the burning of fossil fuels is a principal cause. Thus, it is probable that this will affect the climate and lead to global warming.

This book familiarizes the non-specialist with alternative sources of energy, pointing out their advantages and disadvantages. The appropriate principles of physics and chemistry involved in each alternative will be presented in an easily digestible manner. The book seeks to better inform the public about specific actions that need to be taken in order to better combat energy problems, and reduce climate change.

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structure (Paperback): S. Stein An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structure (Paperback)
S. Stein
R2,039 Discovery Miles 20 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structures is an introduction to seismology and its role in the earth sciences, and is written for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students.

The fundamentals of seismic wave propagation are developed using a physical approach and then applied to show how refraction, reflection, and teleseismic techniques are used to study the structure and thus the composition and evolution of the earth. The book shows how seismic waves are used to study earthquakes and are integrated with other data to investigate the plate tectonic processes that cause earthquakes. Figures, examples, problems, and computer exercises teach students about seismology in a creative and intuitive manner. Necessary mathematical tools including vector and tensor analysis, matrix algebra, Fourier analysis, statistics of errors, signal processing, and data inversion are introduced with many relevant examples. The text also addresses the fundamentals of seismometry and applications of seismology to societal issues. Special attention is paid to help students visualize connections between different topics and view seismology as an integrated science.

"An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes, and Earth Structure" gives an excellent overview for students of geophysics and tectonics, and provides a strong foundation for further studies in seismology.
Multidisciplinary examples throughout the text - catering to students in varied disciplines (geology, mineralogy, petrology, physics, etc.).
Most up to date book on the market - includes recent seismic events such as the 1999 Earthquakes in Turkey, Greece, and Taiwan).
Chapter outlines - each chapter begins with an outline and a list of learning objectives to help students focus and study.
Essential math review - an entire section reviews the essential math needed to understand seismology. This can be covered in class or left to students to review as needed.
End of chapter problem sets - homework problems that cover the material presented in the chapter. Solutions to all odd numbered problem sets are listed in the back so that students can track their progress.
Extensive References - classic references and more current references are listed at the end of each chapter. A set of instructor's resources containing downloadable versions of all the figures in the book, errata and answers to homework problems is available at: http: //levee.wustl.edu/seismology/book/. Also available on this website are PowerPoint lecture slides corresponding to the first 5 chapters of the book.

What compelled a 60+-year-old man, who had been diagnosed previously with blockages of his heart but refused surgery, to begin running marathons? You could say his running began back in Bilgoraj, Poland. "I call this invisible power" Simcha was known to say. Interviewed by numerous magazine and newspaper reporters why Simcha ran, he would reply "because I could" and the people he lost in his hometown of Bilgoraj could not. My hopes for this book is that other 2nd generations will take the time to get the stories from the holocaust survivors they know ... before it is too late for many of them are disappearing rapidly.

Jay Beilis, Jeremy Simcha Garber, Mark S. Stein
R452 Discovery Miles 4 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the great trials of the twentieth century was the 1913 blood-libel trial of Mendel Beilis in Czarist Russia. Beilis, a Jew, was arrested in 1911 by the Czarist secret police and accused of ritually murdering a Christian boy to use his blood in baking matzah for Passover. Beilis was jailed for over two years, under horrible conditions, while awaiting trial. He heroically resisted all pressure to implicate himself or other Jews. In 1913, after a dramatic trial that riveted the Jewish people and much of the rest of the world, Beilis was acquitted by an all-Christian jury. Blood Libel: The Life and Memory of Mendel Beilis includes the gripping memoir of Mendel Beilis, in its first complete English translation. Also included is an essay claiming that Bernard Malamud plagiarized from Beilis's memoir in writing his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Fixer.

Histones and Other Basic Nuclear Proteins (Hardcover): Gary S. Stein, Janet L. Stein Histones and Other Basic Nuclear Proteins (Hardcover)
Gary S. Stein, Janet L. Stein
R18,924 Discovery Miles 189 240 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This comprehensive book is a compilation of Professor Lubomir S. Hnilica's twenty years of research experimentally addressing the chemistry and the biological functions of chromosomal proteins. The histones and other nuclear proteins found associated with DNA in a number of tissues and cell types are featured. Lubomir Hnilica played a major role in establishing the extent to which these basic chromosomal polypeptides are conserved and the manner in which they interact with DNA to modify chromatin structure. In addition, non-histone chromosomal protein research is explained, and his technique of applying several biochemical and immunological approaches to the characterization of this complex and heterogeneous class of chromosomal polypeptides is discussed. Highlighted is the use of chemical crosslinking for studying protein/DNA interactions in intact cells. The proteins as well as the structure, organization, and regulation of the genes are also presented.
