Industrial and Labor Economics - Issues in Developing and Transition Countries (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Saibal Kar, Debabrata... Industrial and Labor Economics - Issues in Developing and Transition Countries (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Saibal Kar, Debabrata Datta
R2,277 R1,803 Discovery Miles 18 030 Save R474 (21%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an attempt to capture and analyze several idiosyncratic features of industry and labor in the developing world. Available books and graduate-level texts in labor economics largely discuss industrial and labor market situations prevalent in developed countries, where well-defined institutional arrangements and regulations create a very different scope of analysis. The patterns of choice in training and contracts in the labor market more apparent in developing and transition countries are discussed, as are the information-theoretic results. The book also critically examines labor migration, a context in which the developing and transition countries represent large sources in the present global order. A broad base of empirical observations from industries is used to develop analytical conjectures on risk-sharing arrangements between workers and employers, while strong intuitive explanations are combined with relevant mathematical and graphical derivations, ensuring the book's readability among graduate students pursuing courses in labor economics and industrial economics for developing and transition countries. The book may also serve as a valuable reference guide for all students in advanced human resources courses at management schools. Presenting state-of-the art research findings in all of its chapters, the book discusses numerous institutional peculiarities of the developing world, making the results distinct in view of the general scope of labor economics.

International Trade, Welfare, and the Theory of General Equilibrium (Hardcover): Sugata Marjit, Saibal Kar International Trade, Welfare, and the Theory of General Equilibrium (Hardcover)
Sugata Marjit, Saibal Kar
R2,239 Discovery Miles 22 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This essential volume reflects the continuing and enduring utility of general equilibrium as a framework of analyses. It attempts to reiterate that understanding broad and holistic consequence of economic events and policies go beyond partial equilibrium perspective. Cutting across areas of research, general equilibrium perspectives in terms of small-scale GE models following the theory and perspectives of Ronald Jones can help readers develop informed judgement regarding critical policies. These include but are not limited to several areas of specific interest - the interaction of financial factors with international trade and implications for the 'real sectors' of the economy, the impact of labour market reforms on the unorganised sectors in developing and transition countries, the non-uniform effects of inflation and deflation on internal and external factor flows, and the sought-after relation between foreign investment and skill accumulation.

International Trade and Economic Development (Hardcover): Rajat Acharyya, Saibal Kar International Trade and Economic Development (Hardcover)
Rajat Acharyya, Saibal Kar
R1,934 Discovery Miles 19 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This graduate textbook offers advanced and contemporary readings in international trade and economic development and provides an overview of the fundamental topics in this area. It brings together many of the issues that are considered staple reading for a course in trade and development and it offers a systematic coverage of the relevant and state of the art research on various aspects of the subject. This includes detailed analysis of important sub-topics such as: trade and labour market, trade and public economics, the theory of the second best, foreign aid, factor mobility, and regional and global welfare. It also covers international trade and labour standards, the informal labour market, and TRIPS. Aimed at post-graduate students interested in trade theory and applications in development issues, this book should also prove a valuable resource for practicing economists, policy makers, and advanced undergraduate students studying international trade. The text balances extensive coverage of available literature in the area with substantive inclusions from new research published in leading journals and volumes. It aims to fill the gap in the teaching resources and should promote further theoretical and empirical research in the subject.

Left Atrial Appendage Closure - Mechanical Approaches to Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation (Paperback, Softcover reprint... Left Atrial Appendage Closure - Mechanical Approaches to Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Jacqueline Saw, Saibal Kar, Matthew J Price
R3,632 Discovery Miles 36 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) closure is an emerging technology for thromboembolic prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The first human implantation of an LAA device occurred in 2001, and since then four devices have received CE mark approval. These devices are being widely used in Europe for LAA closure in patients who are poor candidates for long-term oral anticoagulation. In the US, the WATCHMAN device (Boston Scientific) is anticipated to receive FDA approval imminently for AF patients who are warfarin-eligible. This approval is projected to significantly expand the indications for LAA closures worldwide. Thus, the volume of procedures is anticipated to escalate. This book discusses the epidemiology of AF as a cause of stroke; the use of LAA closure in the reduction of thromboembolism with AF; early surgical approaches and novel surgical devices for LAA closure; and current percutaneous approaches and devices available for LAA closure. The emphasis of this book is on percutaneous technical approaches and contemporary trial results on the leading devices (PLAATO, WATCHMAN, Amplatzer Cardiac Plug, and LARIAT). It also reviews unapproved devices in development, in both clinical and pre-clinical phases.

In collaboration with the Consulting Editors, Ranjan K. Thakur and Andrea Natale, Drs. David R. Holmes Jr., Saibal Kar, Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy, and Vivek Reddy have assembled an issue of Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinics on Left Atrial Appendage. Topics include, but are not limited to, why we have an atrial appendage, thromboembolism in AF, role of LAA in systemic homeostasis, history of LAA closure, impact of LAA closure on systemic thromboembolization, perirprocedural imaging, anatomical considerations for epicardial and endocardial appendage closure, epicardial vs endocardial closure, technical considerations of endocardial and epicardial closure, surgical LAA occlusion, post procedural management, AF patients undergoing ablation, and more.
