An inspiring story, based on the author’s childhood in Soweto in the 1970s. In spite of the bleak surroundings in the township, Nokuthula’ s parents were able to maintain a joyful, celebratory home life. Sam van Riet’s lyrically gentle illustrations reflect the disconnect between the outside world, and the happiness within the four walls of the family house. This book is an ode to the value of hope, love and close-knit family relationships.
This is a factual text, which introduces the learners to different characteristics of wild animals.
Otter, Mongoose and Squirrel never go anywhere. One sunrise, they wake to the excited chatter of birds returning from their yearly journey to the north. This inspires the three friends to go on a trip of their own. Because they can’t fl y, they build a boat and set off across the water, but things don’t work out quite as they planned. Although their great adventure turns out to be short-lived, they all agree that, in the end, it was worth it.

Children from 6 to 9 years old are the target readership for this homegrown book about vegetable gardening. They will learn about planning a garden, types of soil and preparation, planting, pruning and most importantly harvesting, and enjoying their own, healthy vegetables, herbs and salad. Also included are craft projects linked to gardening and easy recipes using the fresh produce they have grown. This is a great way to get kids off the couch and into the garden, and a great way to learn about nature, ecology, and healthy living. Divided in two parts, part one teaches them how to prepare the soil, sow the seeds and care for their plants. It also covers recycling, the seasons, insects and birds in the garden and the cycles of natural life. The second part will encourage children to delight in eating their harvest. Each vegetable is shown on a double page spread, combining information with beautiful photographs, illustrations, and simple recipes. Growing their own vegetables will make children proud to be self-sufficient, even in this small way. They will want to try new vegetables and tastes when they’ve been involved in the planting and have watched their vegetables grow!
