All Tomorrow's Cultures - Anthropological Engagements with the Future (Hardcover, 2 Ed): Samuel Gerald Collins All Tomorrow's Cultures - Anthropological Engagements with the Future (Hardcover, 2 Ed)
Samuel Gerald Collins
R2,866 Discovery Miles 28 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first edition of All Tomorrow's Cultures explored the legacy of futures-thinking in anthropology and marked the beginning of a resurgence of interest in anthropological futures. The new edition has been updated to reflect some of the outpouring of work since then, particularly in science and technology studies and in anthropological analyses of indigenous futures. In addition, Collins has updated the final chapter to expand the field of anthropological possibility in an age of both despair and hope.

Networked Anthropology - A Primer for Ethnographers (Hardcover): Samuel Gerald Collins, Matthew Slover Durington Networked Anthropology - A Primer for Ethnographers (Hardcover)
Samuel Gerald Collins, Matthew Slover Durington
R3,873 Discovery Miles 38 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The advent of social media offers anthropologists exciting opportunities to extend their research to communities in fresh ways. At the same time, these technological developments open up anthropological fieldwork to different hazards. Networked Anthropology explores the increasing appropriation of diverse media platforms and social media into anthropological research and teaching. The chapters consider the possibilities and challenges of multimedia, how network ecologies work, the ethical dilemmas involved, and how to use multimedia methodologies. The book combines theoretical insights with case studies, methodological sketches and pedagogical notes. Drawing on recent ethnographic work, the authors provide practical guidance in creative ways of doing networked anthropology. They point to the future of ethnography, both inside and outside the classroom, and consider ways in which networked anthropology might develop.

Handbook of Research on Agent-based Societies - Social and Cultural Interactions (Hardcover): Goran Trajkovski, Samuel Gerald... Handbook of Research on Agent-based Societies - Social and Cultural Interactions (Hardcover)
Goran Trajkovski, Samuel Gerald Collins
R6,947 Discovery Miles 69 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a given environment, agents interact with each other, imitating, communicating, exchanging, and competing. Based on these heterogeneous modalities of interaction, a variety of socialities may emerge including language and communication, identities, economies, and cultures. ""The Handbook of Research on Agent-Based Societies: Social and Cultural Interactions"" addresses the emergence of societal phenomena in the interactions of systems of agents. Comprising authoritative chapters by numerous international authors, this reference book goes well beyond describing the next generation of multi-agent systems in simulations and system engineering and analyzes existing systems to stimulate the development of new ones. It features: 23 authoritative contributions by over 40 of the world's leading experts on agent-based societies from 7 countries; comprehensive coverage of each specific topic, highlighting recent trends and describing the latest advances in the field; more than 830 references to existing literature and research on agent-based societies; and a compendium of over 260 key terms with detailed definitions. It is organized by topic and indexed, making it a convenient method of reference for all IT/IS scholars and professionals. It includes cross-referencing of key terms, figures, and information pertinent to agent-based societies.

Library of Walls - The Library of Congress and the Contradictions of Information Society (Paperback, New): Samuel Gerald Collins Library of Walls - The Library of Congress and the Contradictions of Information Society (Paperback, New)
Samuel Gerald Collins
R1,084 Discovery Miles 10 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Library of Walls, Samuel Collins engages the heterogeneities of information society at the Library of Congress through ethnographic fieldwork, suggesting that information society is best understood at the locus of conflicting modalities imbricating text, space, work and life. During the 1990's, the Library of Congress was beset with challenges to its traditional roles in cataloging and scholarship while at the same time re-inventing itself as a library without walls. The order of books was threatened on several fronts: in the explosive growth of accessions, in the challenges of online materials and different container types, and in fundamental disagreements about the role of the Library vis-a-vis the nation. But rather than analyze these as separate etiologies, Collins sees them as the expression of an inherently Janus-faced information society that limits information and forecloses debate even as it multiplies avenues of access. Collins considers multiple sites at the Library-its spaces, its artifacts and organization-as contested sites where varied actors negotiate information, knowledge and nation amidst an institution whose own shifting priorities synecdochally mirror the ambiguities and unease of contemporary society.
