Migration and Health in Asia (Paperback): Santosh Jatrana, Mika Toyota, Brenda S.A. Yeoh Migration and Health in Asia (Paperback)
Santosh Jatrana, Mika Toyota, Brenda S.A. Yeoh
R1,688 Discovery Miles 16 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The processes of migration and health are inextricably linked in complex ways, with migration impacting on the mental and physical health of individuals and communities. Health itself can be a motivation for moving or a reason for staying, and migration can have implications on the health of those who move, those who are left behind, and the communities that receive migrants. This volume brings together some of the increasing number of researchers who are studying health and migration in Asia - a continent which is a major exporter and importer of human resources. Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the essays included in this work investigate the interdisciplinary issues of health and health-related behaviours in the field of migration. Comprehensive and scholarly, Migration and Health in Asia also covers major themes such as the pandemics of HIV/AIDS and SARS, differential access to health and civil society for migrants, and the health of the populations who are left behind.

Women Workers in Urban India (Hardcover): Saraswati Raju, Santosh Jatrana Women Workers in Urban India (Hardcover)
Saraswati Raju, Santosh Jatrana
R2,327 Discovery Miles 23 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines the role of women workers who are joining the workforce in urban India. Employment opportunities have opened up and are constantly expanding for women, but this book interrogates whether their working status is breaking gender stereotypes or reaffirming them. It argues that whether women are working in offices or from home, contributing to the IT sector or labouring as petty producers, they are unable to break out of the gendered codes that place them at the lower rungs of the occupational ladder. More importantly, the hierarchical social order, comprising caste, class and ethnic identities, seems to echo in the gendered structure of the labour market as well. This volume studies the intertwining of work with embedded patriarchal notions of women's places in designated spheres, and the overt and covert processes of resistance that women offer in defining new roles and old ones anew.
