Australia's Asian Sporting Context, 1920s - 30s (Hardcover): Sean Brawley, Nick Guoth Australia's Asian Sporting Context, 1920s - 30s (Hardcover)
Sean Brawley, Nick Guoth
R3,878 Discovery Miles 38 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines Australia 's sporting relationships with the Asian region during the interwar period. Until now, Australia 's sporting relationships with the Asian region have been neglected by scholars of Australian and Asian sports history, and the broader field of Australia 's Asian context. Concentrating on the period of the 1920s and 1930s when sporting relationships between Australia and a number of Asian nations emerged in a variety of sports this book demonstrates the depth of these previously under-examined connections. The book challenges, and complicates, the broader historiography of Australia 's Asian context a historiography that has been strongly influenced by the White Australia Policy and the Pacific War. Why, for example, did white Australia so warmly welcome visiting Japanese sportsmen at a time when the Pacific region appeared to be inexorably sliding into a war that was informed by racial antagonisms?

This book examines sporting relations between Australia and seven Asian countries (China, Japan, India, Netherlands East Indies, Philippines, Malaya and Singapore) and a range of sports including rugby, football, swimming, hockey, boxing, cricket and tennis. The significance of the collection is drawn together in a concluding chapter by prominent historian David Walker.

This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Key decisions and events of the Pacific War are explored in this work by juxtaposing Allied and Japanese accounts, giving voice to both sides in this epic confrontation. Competing Voices from the Pacific War: Fighting Words covers the period from July 1937 to September 1945, touching briefly on the post-war Allied occupation of Japan. Although it emphasizes American and Japanese accounts, it also includes perspectives from other nations. Materials covering political and strategic issues, the experiences of combatants and prisoners of war, the experiences of civilians caught up in the various war zones, and the impact of the war on the various home fronts, are also included. By including a range of primary sources representing the experiences and views of participants and commentators of all sides and setting them in their historical contexts, this unique anthology promotes an understanding of the Pacific War, the events that led up to it, and its legacies. Alongside sources that reflect traditional military history, material that considers the war from the perspective of the "new military history" is also included.

The essays in this collection examine the place of history in terrorism studies and in contemporary discussions on terrorism and counter-terrorism. This volume marks an effort by a group of scholars and practitioners to provide a justification for the better understanding of Terrorism's past and the importance of this past for today and tomorrow. The collection is divided into four sections. Section One places Terrorism Studies and the study of history in context and considers the connections between these fields of study. Section Two is written by non-historians and practitioners who have seen the importance of historical context and perspective in the understanding of current events. Section Three provides case studies that explore the history of terrorism and politically motivated violence. Section Four places concerns about terrorism in regional and foreign policy context. "This collection helps us advance our understanding of terrorism beyond simplistic and dichotomist assertions about "them" and "us." Taken together, these essays highlight the importance of analyzing, rather than assuming." -Chris Dixon, Professor, School of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Classics, The University of Queensland, Australia. "This collection could not come at a more opportune time given the current preoccupation in government with Terrorism... It will not only contribute substantially to the current scholarship on the subject, but will set a benchmark by which future researchers will have to measure themselves. It will, furthermore, become a reference for both students and experts in the field." -Philip Dwyer, Director, Social and Cultural Conflict Research Group, University of Newcastle, Australia. "In this volume, the subject matter ranges widely over the field including important contributions on some of the major areas of international conflict of the last twenty years. By paying attention to national, regional and international phenomena, this collection will provide access to a breadth of historical perspectives and approaches that is uncommon in this field of studies." -Mark Finnane, Professor, ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security, Griffith University, Australia.

The South Seas - A Reception History from Daniel Defoe to Dorothy Lamour (Paperback): Sean Brawley, Chris Dixon The South Seas - A Reception History from Daniel Defoe to Dorothy Lamour (Paperback)
Sean Brawley, Chris Dixon
R1,593 Discovery Miles 15 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The South Seas charts the idea of the South Seas in popular cultural productions of the English-speaking world, from the beginnings of the Western enterprise in the Pacific until the eve of the Pacific War. Building on the notion that the influences on the creation of a text, and the ways in which its audience receives the text, are essential for understanding the historical significance of particular productions, Sean Brawley and Chris Dixon explore the ways in which authors' and producers' ideas about the South Seas were "haunted" by others who had written on the subject, and how they in turn influenced future generations of knowledge producers. The South Seas is unique in its examination of an array of cultural texts. Along with the foundational literary texts that established and perpetuated the South Seas tradition in written form, the authors explore diverse cultural forms such as art, music, theater, film, fairs, platform speakers, surfing culture, and tourism.
