Wie ken nie die seun met die goue hare en die wit hoedjie wat op die groot, wit gans oor Lapland sweef nie? Dis Niels Holgersson, natuurlik.
Niels Holgersson bly op ’n plaas in Swede. Hy is ’n klein niksnut.

The Treasure is an opposite fairy tale, presenting Prince Charming
as he really is: an orphan girl is cleaning fish and foreseeing her
life of poverty; a man well-dressed in seductive splendor woos her
and offers her ... forever after. There is only one catch: she must
betray her sister. Although Selma Lagerlof won the Nobel Prize for
literature in 1909, her name is known in this country - if at all -
as author of a children's book only. All her other works, including
novels and feminist essays, have been unavailable in English for
almost fifty years.
Year after year the Franciscans defended the Capitol by penitences,
and works of charity, and the promulgation of God's word. They
protected it century after century, but as time went on, men became
more and more feeble and lacking in force. The monks said among
themselves: "Soon the kingdoms of the earth can stand no longer. A
redeemer of the world is needed as in the time of Augustus." They
tore their hair and scourged themselves, for they knew that he who
was to be born again must be the Antichrist, and that it would be a
regeneration of force and violence. As a sick man is tormented by
his pain, so were they hunted by the thought of Antichrist. And
they saw him before them. He was as rich as Christ had been poor,
as wicked as Christ had been good, as honored as Christ had been
humiliated. He bore powerful weapons and marched at the head of
bloody evil-doers. He overturned the churches, murdered the
priests, and armed people for strife, so that brother fought
against brother, and each feared his neighbor, and there was no
peace. And for every person of power and might who made his way
over the sea of time, they cried out from the watchtower on the
Capitol: "Antichrist, Antichrist "

THE MIRACLES OF ANTICHRIST was written following a trip of Selma
Lagerlof's to Sicily. While there, she heard -- and was inspired by
-- a Sicilian legend: "When Antichrist comes, he shall seem as
Christ. There shall be great want, and Antichrist shall go from
land to land and give bread to the poor. And he shall find many
followers." Selma Lagerlof was the first woman and the first
Swedish author to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in
1909. She was considered one of Sweden's most beloved authors; the
Swedish Academy declared that their recognition of her was "for
reason of the noble idealism, the wealth of imagination, the
soulful quality of style, which characterize her works."

The debut novel of Swedish author Selma Lagerlof, "The Saga of
Gosta Berling" was first published in 1891. It is the story of its
titular character Gosta Berling, a deposed minister. Gosta Berling
becomes one of the pensioners in the manor at Ekeby when he is
saved by the Mistress of Ekeby from freezing to death. Set on the
shores of Lake Fryken, Lake Loven in the story, in Varmland, a
historical province in Sweden, the novel employs elements of magic
realism to project an exotic image of early 19th century Sweden.
Described in the "Encyclopedia Americana" as a "prose epic of
Swedish country life," "The Saga of Gosta Berling" remains to this
day one of Lagerlof's most popular works and an undisputed classic
of Swedish romanticism.
