These archaeological studies offer to provide an alternative tour
through Vesuvian cities. One way to see Pompeii, for example, is
via its hydraulic systems, from the higher parts to waterlogged
landfills at the mouth of Sarno. They invite you to walk the
streets amidst the traces of regulation issued in municipal law and
the free initiative of those who built and maintained the
sidewalks. The graffiti and paintings allow us to take a tour
specially designed to understand the tastes and devotions of the
inhabitants of the Vesuvian cities. Thus, disparate themes
researched separately may be presented here as a coherent work that
initiates the visitor into Vesuvian studies. Each author gives us a
particular tour of the specifics of the cities and villages of the
Vesuvian area, its story, furniture, findings and the research
process that has been developed over many years.
This collective work, carried out by both senior and beginning
researchers, is for those scholars who have their gaze fixed on the
fascinating mosaic of cultures that was the North-African world
from the moment Rome appeared in the region. Even before this date,
the arrival of Phoenicians on the continent and their subsequent
spread throughout the north of it, initiated a rich process of
contacts, interchanges and relations with the Libyan-Berber
populations that inhabited the zone from time immemorial. To this
scene of ancient cultural diversity -which also included an
Egyptian component- Rome brought its own riches, generating in the
region new episodes of cultural and religious syncretism. All these
subjects are treated in the present book through some specific
scientific contributions whose geopolitical frame is the whole
Proconsular Africa. Most of the articles in this volume are
dedicated to the world of images, but others also treat many other
issues as Historiography, Archaeology of Architecture,
Libyan-Berber ethnicities and even cultural parallels between North
Africa and the Iberian Peninsula.
The History of archaeological research has only recently become a
research topic of interest within Spain. A congress, Colecciones,
arqueologos, instituciones y yacimientos en la Espana de los Siglos
XVIII al XX, was held at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in
2016 designed to bring this topic to the fore. Eleven papers are
presented in this proceedings volume. They address several aspects
from different perspectives that collectively enrich the
historiography of Spanish archaeological research.
