Transforming Sport and Physical Cultures through Feminist Knowledges contributes new perspectives on the entanglement of digital and physical cultures, more-than-human relations, post and decolonial ways of knowing, and how onto-epistemologies of sport come to matter. These perspectives are explored through a diverse array of topics, including, the embodiment of netball through Feminist Physical Cultural Studies; pregnant embodiment and implications of the postgenomic turn; posthumanist perspectives on women’s negotiation of affective body work and an autoethnographic account of how masculinity materialises through football; the mediation of gendered subjectivity through the digital-physical cultures of cycling; as well as how decolonial and postcolonial approaches identify the gendered and racialised relations of power in sport for development and football campaigns aimed at women’s empowerment. The thread that connects these chapters is the ‘doing’ of feminism as a generative knowledge practice that can transform ways of imagining, knowing, and affecting more equitable futures. This feminist collection contributes to the movement of ideas and transformation of knowledge within and across sport and physical cultures. Authors explore the power relations implicated in the gendered formation of physical cultures (across leisure, sport, the arts, tourism, well-being, and various embodied practices) from a range of disciplinary perspectives and theory-method approaches. As a new breed of lifestyle sport enthusiasts 'derby grrrls' are pushing the boundaries of gender as they negotiate the nexus of pleasure, pain and power relations. Offering a socio-cultural analysis of the rise and reinvention of roller derby as both a new, globalized women's sport and an everyday creative leisure space, this book explores the manner in which roller derby has emerged as a gendered space for self-transformation, belonging and embodied contest, in which women are invited to experience their emotions differently, embrace pain and overcome limits. Sport, Gender and Power: The Rise of Roller Derby presents detailed interview, ethnographic and autoethnographic material, together with a range of media texts to shed new light on the complex relationships of power experienced by women in derby as a sport culture, whilst also examining the darker relationships that characterise the sport, including those of inclusion and exclusion, difference and identity, and competition and participation. Drawing upon insights from feminist new materialism the book traces the complex material-discursive processes through which women's recovery from depression is enacted within a gendered biopolitics. Within the biomedical assemblage that connects mental health policy, service provision, research and everyday life, the gendered context of recovery remains little understood despite the recurrence and pervasiveness of depression. Rather than reducing experience to discrete biological, psychological or sociological categories, feminist thinking moves with the biopsychosocialities implicated in both distress and lively modes of becoming well. Using a post-qualitative approach, the book creatively re-presents how women 'do' recovery within and beyond the normalising imperatives of biomedical and psychotherapeutic practices. By pursuing the affective movement of self through depression this inquiry goes beyond individualised models to explore the enactment of multiple self-world relations. Reconfiguring depression and recovery as bodymind matters opens up a relational ontology concerned with the entanglement of gender inequities and mental (ill) health.
