In spite of recent changes in nurse education, nurses still need to
know about medicine to understand their work with patients. This is
the latest edition of what has become a popular and enduring
nursing textbook. It is a short textbook of medicine written by
medical experts, but read by nurses. Nurses have consistently found
this book invaluable because of the level at which the text is
pitched. It has been written in consultation with nurses and covers
exactly the medical knowledge that they require. These features make
it still an ideal medical text for nurses: Includes the medical

The time is 1949, just before the Korean War - a war that many
believed would become World War III. At Bald Sam's luncheonette in
Brooklyn, Izzy and his friends Archie Feinstein, Jack Goldfarb,
Benny Kubbleman, and Meyer Woolf gather to eat, to watch the
Dodgers on TV, and to share their hopes and their fears. But most
of all, Izzy and his friends tell jokes. They've heard them all
before, but in this time and place, jokes are their best defense
against the sense of powerlessness that pervades in a world fraught
with uncertainty. Izzy has been a boxer and a World War II soldier;
and he carries in his head not only shrapnel from the Battle of
Monte Cassino but also the memory of his father lying dead on a
muddy street in Poland. Now a street singer, Izzy plays his
concertina in the courtyard for a woman who invites him up for
companionship and jokes, he reluctantly lets himself be set up on a
date with Meyer's niece Celia, and he befriends a troubled
librarian, as all the while he struggles to find his way back from
his own war.
When Vladimir Putin claimed "outside forces" were at work during
the Ukrainian Orange Revolution of 2004, it was not just a case of
paranoia. In this uprising against election fraud, protesters had
been trained in political organization and nonviolent resistance by
a Western-financed democracy building coalition. Putin's
accusations were more than just a call to xenophobic impulses-they
were a testament to the pervasive influence of transnational actors
in the shaping of postcommunist countries. Despite this, the role
of transnational actors has been downplayed or dismissed by many
theorists. Realists maintain that only powerful states assert major
influence, while others argue that transnational actors affect only
rhetoric, not policy outcomes. The editors of this volume contend
that transnational actors have exerted a powerful influence in
postcommunist transitions. They demonstrate that transitions to
democracy, capitalism, and nation-statehood, which scholars thought
were likely to undermine one another, were facilitated by the
integration of Central and East European states into an
international system of complex interdependence. Transnational
actors turn out to be the "dark matter" that held the various
aspects of the transition together. Transnational actors include
international governmental and nongovernmental organizations,
corporations, banks, foundations, religious groups, and activist
networks, among others. The European Union is the most visible
transnational actor in the region, but there are many others,
including the OSCE, NATO, Council of Europe, the Catholic Church,
and the Soros Foundation. "Transnational Actors in Central and East
European Transitions" assemblesleading scholars to debate the role
and impact of transnational actors and presents a promising new
research program for the study of this rapidly transforming region.
