A Liberated Mind: The Essential Guide To ACT (Paperback): Steven Hayes A Liberated Mind: The Essential Guide To ACT (Paperback)
Steven Hayes 1

Over the last 35 years, Steven C. Hayes and his colleagues have developed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with many hundreds of studies supporting the impact of his approach on everything from chronic pain to weight loss to prejudice and bigotry.

A Liberated Mind is the summary of Steven’s life’s work which will teach readers how to live better, happier and more fulfilled lives by applying the six key processes of ACT. Put together these processes teach us to pivot: to “defuse” rather than fuse with our thoughts; to see life from a new perspective; and to discover our chosen values, those qualities of being that fuel meaning.

Steve shares fascinating research results like how ACT techniques decreased typing errors on a clerical test or showed that positive affirmations actually increase negative emotion. And he weaves them with stories of clients and colleagues as well as his own riveting story of healing himself of a severe panic disorder, which is how the idea of psychological flexibility was born.

A Liberated Mind is a powerful and important book about a new form of psychology, destined to become a modern classic of narrative psychology on par with Daring Greatly and Rising Strong by Brene Brown, or Carol Dweck’s Mindset.

Stephen Hayes
R418 Discovery Miles 4 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A sensational second book in The Biggest Gang trilogy from detective turned author Stephen Hayes. Fifty Shades Of Black 'N' Blue will not disappoint - the beatings continue, the culture of police corruption is further outlined with yet more real-life examples and there's yet more sex both in and out of uniform. Mr Hayes tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in this shocking sequel to his first book The Biggest Gang In Britain. The new book is slicker and sicker than his first and and as compelling as any kicking in the police cells. This volume starts with a bizarre death that led to life-changing alterations for the author and his family. It's already being considered as a movie storyline with one New York Times author describing the plot as "simply superb". Read it and weep - Daily Record Unlike a rubber truncheon this book will leave marks - Sunday Mirror The whole truth, like a kick in the crutch, can be very painful - Daily Star Sunday The honesty on the subject of police dishonesty is most refreshing - Stockport Express

The Confidence Gap - A Guide to Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt (Paperback): Russ Harris The Confidence Gap - A Guide to Overcoming Fear and Self-Doubt (Paperback)
Russ Harris; Foreword by Steven Hayes

Too many of us miss out on opportunities in life because we lack self-confidence. Whether it involves public speaking, taking on a leadership role, or starting a relationship, we often don't feel equipped to handle new challenges.
Most confidence-building strategies --such as affirmations and positive self-talk --help us only in the short term, if at all. Russ Harris offers a surprising and revolutionary solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity. Rather than trying to vanquish our fears, the secret is actually to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it. ""
"The Confidence Gap" draws on proven mindfulness-based techniques and on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to provide a long-term solution. (ACT is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating a range of mental health problems.) Harris combines key insights, anecdotes, and exercises, along with humor and playfulness, to show readers how to overcome self-defeating patterns and get more out of life.

TOP SECRETS. Confidential revelations from the life of the UK's leading private detective. The anticipated final book in the Biggest Gang in Britain trilogy. Moving on from the brutally honest accounts of police work during the 1960s and 1970s to the private detective sector of the 1980s and 1990s. The latest book gives further eye opening, and gripping revelations of accepted practices then and until the Human Rights Act of 1998 when such devious practices went underground and of course were constantly denied, but actively used until and beyond the prosecutions, imprisonment and further revelations concerning the News of the World journalists and others. As with Hillsborough, Jimmy Savile, Plebgate etc. in relation to the culture of lies and fabrication within the police the hacking, bribing and blagging practices of the media using private detectives were shockingly revealed for all to see. Following hot on the tracks of such revelations comes Top Secrets and once again, written in the same style as the first two books but this time naming names. Of course the book comes with hard hitting humour, is refreshing and surprising and if nothing else gives an entertaining insight into what were once accepted practices of private detectives and now all said to be underground and of course hidden in a blanket of denial. A colourful life, many amusing high spots but tinged with heart breaking sadness, charity work, Christianity and support of Firehiwot Abebe an Ethiopian five year old through Compassion, a charity releasing children from poverty. Every purchase gives valuable support to this child whose favourite game is sadly, 'jumping' and her favourite food is 'rice' and other little children with similar simple pleasures.

On the surface, Chopville appears not unlike any other small town in rural Australia. However, its underbelly is more than extraordinary. Amongst its modest community reside six people from two very different families -- they make up the six most powerful people in the world today. Branded as "Sorcerers," they are the only six people in the world with true magical power. Yet these two families do not cooperate together and although there is no open fighting in the year 2010, things weren't always that peaceful. John Playman knows this as well as anyone; at the age of 14, he is familiar with the concept of magic, having been raised in a family heavily involved in the magical war 30 years earlier, even though he has never met any of the Sorcerers himself. This year, however, all that is about to change; John and a group of his school friends will find themselves in an unprecedented situation and carrying a responsibility almost too great to comprehend. John and his cohorts struggle on two fronts with their hormones raging and with the discovery of whom among them is to become the Seventh Sorcerer.

The first of two hard hitting, brutally honest accounts of police work during the late 1960s and 1970s. Whilst explicit, they are often humorous, refreshing and equally unbelievable. In this first book of a trilogy the author takes the reader through his early police service and in the second book Fifty Shades of Black 'n' Blue, his later years. The series of two gritty yet humorous books are written with such explicit content that leaves little doubt that many working practices of the 60s and 70s have in reality actually become a culture of dishonesty, lies and often stupidity which has been accepted by the Government of the day, the judiciary and the public at large for many years. That is of course until the present day when it has all gone so wrong. Very, very wrong with the revelations of the Hillsborough Investigation, the Jimmy Savile Investigation, so many more and even 'Plebgate' when The Biggest Gang believed they were so powerful that evidence against Andrew Mitchell MP, a member of Her Majesty's Government left so many questions, which when answered were proved to be blatant lies. This book explains that such examples are not typical of a minority rogue element as being claimed but are a dishonest culture, born so long ago but allowed to fester and grow with the many examples and revelations which have continued until today with Plebgate and Hillsborough as only two shocking examples.

Corbett Hale knows the sea is an inscrutable lady-one day calm, the next a fury. But as he sets sail with a crew of three from the bay waters of the Chesapeake, heading to the Bahamas, Corbett cannot know what awaits them as he guides his beloved sloop, Gilead, into the Atlantic.

Sailing south, he confronts haunted memories from a time he spent on another water, in another part of the world. Even as the violence of the sea tests his courage and skill as a sailor, he finds himself both drawn back into the turbulence of the Vietnam War and pulled forward into a struggle for survival.

"Light on Dark Water" tells the story not only of a battle for survival at sea, but of one man's fight with his own sense of incompleteness, anger, and remorse, as he attempts to come to terms with the raw interplay of loss and grace that is the essence of life itself.

For a scientist committed to empirical evaluation, it is important to show that materials can be helpful outside the context of a therapeutic relationship, so, generally speaking, we know that a book like this is likely to be helpful. Several of the specific components in this book have been tested, sometimes in a form very similar to the way you are contacting this material. For example, several studies evaluated the impact of short passages drawn nearly word for word from ACT materials (very similar to what you've read) that were recorded on audiotape, read aloud by a research assistant, or were presented to the participants to read. Typically, these studies focused on the ability of participants to tolerate distress of various kinds, such as gas-induced panic-like symptoms, extreme cold, extreme heat, or electric shock. A few studies looked at the distress produced by difficult or intrusive cognitions, or clinically relevant anxiety. Some were done with patients, others with normal populations. The specific ACT components that have been examined so far include defusion, acceptance, mind-fulness, and values. The techniques included exercises, metaphors, and rationales, including several that can be found in this book (e.g., word repetition, physicalizing, leaves on a stream, the quicksand metaphor, the Chinese finger trap metaphor, and so forth). Thus, it seems fair to say that it is known that at least some of what you've read can be helpful at least some of the time outside of the context of a therapeutic relationship, when presented in a form similar to the form in which you have contacted this material.....Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D., is University of Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. He is author of more than 350 scientific articles and twenty-seven books, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Relational Frame Theory - two books that significantly develop the concepts on which Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life is based. His research explores the nature of human language and cognition and their application to the understanding and alleviation of human suffering. In 1992, the Institute for Scientific Information reported Hayes among the highest-impact psychologists in the world during the years 1986-90 based on the citation impact of his writings. He is past-president of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy, the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and Division Twenty-Five of the American Psychological Association. He was the first Secretary-Treasurer of the American Psychological Society. He is the recipient of the Don F. Hake Award for Exemplary Contributions to Basic Behavioral Research and Its Applications from Division 25 of the American Psychological Association. In 1999, US Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala appointed him to a four-year term on the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse. Spencer Smith is a writer and editor based in Santa Rosa, CA. He is coauthor of The Memory Doctor.
