Sandy beaches are the most abundant coastal environments worldwide,
which have an undeniable and unique ecological value. Presently,
they are amongst the most endangered ecosystems in the biosphere,
mainly due to the influence of several human activities. In this
book, renowned scientists from around the world describe key
attributes of sandy beaches and highlight the problems which impact
them. Specific tools encompassing the physical environment and the
biota are pointed out, at different levels of ecological
organization. The book also covers suitable management,
conservation programmes and respective actions, where ecologic,
economic and social dimensions are comprehensively integrated.
This book examines the management of migratory flows in the
Mediterranean within an international security perspective. The
intense migratory flows registered during the year 2015 and the
tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea have tested the mechanisms of
the Union's immigration and asylum policies and its ability to
respond to humanitarian crises. Moreover, these flows of varying
intensities and geographies represent a threat to the internal
security of the EU and its member states. By using Spain and Italy
as case studies, the author theorizes that the EU, given its
inability to adopt and implement a common policy to effectively
manage migratory flows on its Southern border, uses a deterrence
strategy based on minimum common denominators.
This handbook offers a critical and substantial analysis of
maritime security and documents the most pressing strategic,
economic, socio-cultural and legal questions surrounding it.
Written by leading international experts, this comprehensive volume
presents a wide variety of theoretical positions on maritime
security, detailing its achievements and outlining outstanding
issues faced by those in the field. The book includes studies which
cover the entire spectrum of activity along which maritime security
is developing, including, piracy, cyber security, energy security,
terrorism, narco-subs and illegal fishing. Demonstrating the
transformative character and potential of the topic, the book is
divided into two parts. The first part exhibits a range of
perspectives and new approaches to maritime security, and the
second explores emerging developments in the practice of security
at sea, as well as regional studies written by local maritime
security experts. Taken together, these contributions provide a
compelling account of the evolving maritime security environment,
casting fresh light on theoretical and empirical aspects. The book
will be of much interest to practitioners and students of maritime
security, naval studies, security studies, maritime history, and
International Relations in general.
