There are few if any more gut-wrenching experiences than being cut
off by a close friend or relative. Endless examples in fiction
attest to it, and nearly everyone the authors interviewed for this
book had a story to tell. They or someone they knew had been on the
receiving end of a significant cutoff, or had initiated a cutoff
themselves. In some cases, initiated or not, a cold or angry cutoff
literally made the person sick. Given the magnitude of the problem
and the pain it causes, it is surprising that so little has been
written to help clinicians understand the genesis of cutoffs, the
complex dynamics involved in particular cutoffs, and how to
undertake the delicate work of helping clients consider and work
toward reconciliation. Not on Speaking Terms is designed to close
this gap.
