Over the course of several months Pi manages to survive on the meagre supplies of food and water he finds on the boat, and also takes up fishing, while in his half-delirious state he muses on various aspects of animal behaviour, religion and the meaning of life.

Living in the tropical island of Hawaii, with his financial future secure, King has grown complacent to an extent that is only brought home to him when a boating accident sends his wife, Elizabeth (Patricia Hastie), into a coma. Left in sole charge of the daughters he has largely neglected, Scottie (Amara Miller) and Alex (Shailene Woodley), Matt is called to face his responsibilities as an adult. However, when he discovers that Elizabeth had been having an affair in the months leading up to the accident, a test of his newfound emotional maturity is presented. The film won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Double bill featuring movies that focus on America's recent involvement in foreign countries. In 'The Kingdom' (2007), when a terrorist bomb detonates inside a Western housing compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, an international incident is ignited. While diplomats slowly debate equations of territorialism, FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx) quickly assembles an elite team and negotiates a secret five-day trip into Saudi Arabia to locate the madman behind the bombing. Upon landing in the desert kingdom, however, Fleury and his team discover Saudi authorities suspicious and unwelcoming of American interlopers into what they consider a local matter. Hamstrung by protocol, and with the clock ticking on their five days, the FBI agents find their expertise worthless without the trust of their Saudi counterparts who want to locate the terrorist in their homeland on their own terms. Fleury's crew finds a like-minded partner in Saudi Police Captain Al-Ghazi (Ashraf Barhom), who helps them navigate royal politics and unlock the secrets of the crime scene and the workings of an extremist, hell bent on further destruction. 'Jarhead' (2006) is an adaptation of former Marine Anthony Swofford's Gulf War memoir. Young recruit Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) joins up with the US Marines (nicknamed 'Jarheads' because of their distinctive haircuts) on the eve of the 1990 Gulf War. After a brutal spell in boot camp, during which Swofford and his fellow recruits are systematically geared up for the conflict, the Marines are dispatched to the deserts of the Persian Gulf to take part in a war that sees them required to do very little in the way of fighting. Bored and frustrated in the middle of nowhere, the young soldiers resort to a macabre sense of humour as they wait for the war to happen to them.

Double bill of family films from Disney. 'Saving Mr. Banks' (2013) is based on the life of author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) and Walt Disney (Tom Hanks)'s attempt to gain the rights to adapt her novel 'Mary Poppins'. In 1961, when her book sales begin to decline, Travers reluctantly enters into negotiations with Disney, who promised his daughters 20 years previously that he would turn their favourite story into a movie. Initially Travers is unyielding and flashbacks to her childhood in 1907 demonstrate why her novel and, in particular, her eponymous character are so precious to her. Eventually she agrees to let Disney go ahead with the movie but will she approve of the final outcome? The cast also features Colin Farrell, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman and Ruth Wilson. Thomas Newman received an Oscar nomination for his score. In the musical 'Mary Poppins' (1964), based on Travers' book series, stuffy parents in Victorian London are looking for a nanny, but the children write their own ad which is torn up and thrown into the fire. Miraculously, the paper reassembles and floats up the chimney flue and along comes Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) on her umbrella/parachute. She brings fun and magic to the children's lives, as well as a guiding hand. The film won five Oscars including Best Actress (Andrews), Best Original Score and Best Song ('Chim Chim Cher-ee').

Skeeter (Emma Stone), the strong-willed daughter of a well-to-do family, returns to the town from college to take up a role at the local newspaper. However, working as a 'homemaker hints' columnist in the paper is by no means the extent of Skeeter's ambitions. Disturbed by the negative attitude of her friend, Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard), towards her house staff, Skeeter decides to write a book chronicling the experiences of the black maids who have spent much of their lives serving her and her contemporaries. Initially, the maids seem reluctant and suspicious. However, when the much-respected Aibileen (Viola Davis) comes forward to offer her story, the floodgates open and the women take the opportunity to make themselves heard. Octavia Spencer won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Aibileen's friend, Minny Jackson, an outspoken maid who finds it difficult to get work after being fired and eventually decides to share her experiences with Skeeter.

Adele and Paul Epworth won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for their song 'Skyfall' and the film also received BAFTAs for Outstanding British Film and Original Film Music (Thomas Newman).

Milos Forman directs this biographical drama about the controversial life of Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson). Free speech campaigner Larry Flynt made his millions publishing the pornographic magazine 'Hustler' in the 1970s. After making his name as a man who is willing to stand up for his rights, he meets and falls in love with go-go dancer Althea Leasure (Courtney Love). When Flynt is arrested on charges of obscenity and organised crime, his lawyer Alan Isaacman (Edward Norton) unsuccessfully defends him in court, announcing his sentence of 25 years in prison. Released after just five months however, Flynt battles through further lengthy legal proceedings in an attempt to clear his name once and for all.

In 'The Lost Boys' (1987), two brothers move to a new town and soon fall in with the wrong crowd - a gang of punks who also happen to be blood-swilling vampires. But the younger brother (Corey Haim) is made of tougher stuff and, along with a couple of friends, decides to make a stand. Pretty soon the suburbs start swinging to the sound of teen vampire combat. In 'The Lost Boys - The Tribe' (2008), a young girl named Nicole (Autumn Reeser) falls in with a pack of vampire surfers after moving to California with her brother Chris (Tad Hilgenbrink). Seduced by the leader of the gang, Autumn soon realises that there are forces in nature that could destroy everything she has ever cared for. 'The Lost Boys - The Thirst' (2010), sees Corey Feldman reprise his role as Edgar Frog, a down and out vampire hunter who is asked by writer Gwen Lieber (Tanit Phoenix) to rescue her son from a newborn army. Gwen offers to pay Edgar a substantial fee for his services and he agrees to take on the dangerous mission. Realising the risks involved, Edgar asks his brother, Alan (Jamison Newlander), to assist him.

Steven Soderbergh directs an all-star cast in this psychological thriller following the effects of one woman's mental breakdown on those closest to her. In the hopes of treating the depression she is suffering in anticipation of her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) returning home from prison, Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) is prescribed the new and untested drug Ablixa by her psychiatrist Dr Banks (Jude Law) after seeking the guidance of Dr Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Soon afterwards, things start looking up for the Taylors but it isn't long before Emily begins experiencing some disturbing side effects which appear to blur the line between fantasy and reality.
