Stanley Milgram's experiments on obedience to authority are among
the most important psychological studies of this century. Perhaps
because of the enduring significance of the findings--the
surprising ease with which ordinary persons can be commanded to act
destructively against an innocent individual by a legitimate
authority--it continues to claim the attention of psychologists and
other social scientists, as well as the general public. The study
continues to inspire valuable research and analysis. The goal of
this book is to present current work inspired by the obedience
paradigm.
This book demonstrates the vibrancy of the obedience paradigm by
presenting some of its most important and stimulating contemporary
uses and applications. Paralleling Milgram's own eclecticism in the
content and style of his research and writing, the contributions
comprise a potpourri of styles of research and
presentation--ranging from personal narratives, through conceptual
analyses, to randomized experiments.

Originally published in 1977, the aim of this volume was to
demonstrate in a concrete way the relevance of some of the most
important individual variables for various domains of social
behaviour. Eminent researchers at the time contributed original
chapters that provided an up-to-date perspective on theory and
research on important and widely used personality constructs. This
volume should serve as a text for advanced level students seeking a
historical introduction to specific personality variables and a
survey of theory and research on the most widely used personality
dimensions of the time.
Stanley Milgram revolutionized our understanding of human nature
with his classic research on obedience to authority - but the
obedience experiments form just a small part of an extraordinary
wealth of ground-breaking research that made him one of the most
important social psychologists of our times. By the time the first
edition of The Individual in a Social World appeared in 1977,
Milgram had moved beyond obedience to other innovative research,
such as the psychology of city life, the small world phenomenon
(also known as 'six degrees of separation'), mental maps of cities,
the lost-letter technique, the familiar stranger, as well as a
large-scale experiment on media influence, which is still unique to
the present day. In 1992, a second, posthumous edition appeared
containing additional articles which Milgram had written after the
first edition. This third, expanded edition of The Individual in a
Social World combines articles that appeared in both of the earlier
editions as well as previously uncollected material. Among the
latter is, for example, an article in which Milgram provides a
perspective on the Jonestown massacre and then uses it as a
stepping stone for a ringing affirmation of the power of
situational determinants of behavior. Another article, 'The Social
Meaning of Fanaticism,' is almost uncanny in its relevance to our
times, despite the fact that it was written several decades ago, as
is his take on the potential impact of the Internet in 'Network
Love'. Stanley Milgram possessed a relentless curiosity about the
hidden workings of our social world, which he tried to make visible
through his experiments and think pieces brought together in this
unique, revealing and engaging book - a must-read for anyone
interested in social psychology.

Creator of the famous Obedience Experiments and originator of the
six degrees of separation" theory, Stanley Milgram transformed our
understanding of human nature and continues to be one of the most
important figures in psychology and beyond. In this sparkling
biography, Thomas Blass captures the colourful personality and
pioneering work of a visionary scientist who revealed the hidden
workings of our social world. In this new paperback edition, he
includes an afterword connecting Milgram's theories to torture, war
crimes, and Abu Ghraib.
