Conflict is an inevitable part of life, according to this ancient
Chinese classic of strategy, but everything necessary to deal with
conflict wisely, honorably, victoriously, is already present within
us. Compiled more than two thousand years ago by a mysterious
warrior-philosopher, "The Art of War " is still perhaps the most
prestigious and influential book of strategy in the world, as
eagerly studied in Asia by modern politicians and executives as it
has been by military leaders since ancient times. As a study of the
anatomy of organizations in conflict, "The Art of War " applies to
competition and conflict in general, on every level from the
interpersonal to the international. Its aim is invincibility,
victory without battle, and unassailable strength through
understanding the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict.

Entry Into the Inconceivable is an introduction to the philosophy
of the Hua-yen school of Buddhism, one of the cornerstones of East
Asian Buddhist thought. Cleary presents a survey of the unique
Buddhist scripture on which the Hua-yen teaching is based and a
brief history of its introduction into China. He also presents a
succinct analysis of the essential metaphysics of Hua-yen Buddhism
as it developed during China's golden age and full translations of
four basic texts by seminal thinkers of the school.
A remarkable collection of essays, Shobogenzo, ""Treasury of the
Eye of True Teaching,"" was composed in the thirteenth century by
the Zen master Dogen, founder of the Soto Zen school in Japan.
Through its linguistic artistry and its philosophical subtlety, the
Shobogenzo presents a thorough recasting of Buddhism with a
creative ingenuity that has never been matched in the subsequent
literature of Japanese Zen. With this translation of thirteen of
the ninety-five essays, Thomas Cleary attempts to convey the form
as well as the content of Dogen's writing, thereby preserving the
instrumental structure of the original text. Together with
pertinent commentary, biography, and notes, these essays make
accessible to a wider audience a Zen classic once considered the
private reserve of Soto monks and Buddhologists. Readers from many
fields in the sciences and humanities will find themselves richly
rewarded.
A welcome addition to the still limited number of Taoist texts
translated from the Chinese originals."" --Journal of Chinese

Discover the spiritually incisive strategies for peacefully
resolving conflict in this masterpiece of military strategy.
Written 2,500 years ago by Chinese general Sun Tzu, The Art of War
is a poetic and potent treatise on military strategy still in use
in war colleges around the world. Yet its principles transcend
warfare and have practical applications to all the conflicts and
crises we face in our lives—in our workplaces, our families, even
within ourselves. Thomas Huynh guides you through Sun Tzu's
masterwork, highlighting principles that encourage a perceptive and
spiritual approach to conflict, enabling you to: Prevent conflicts
before they arise Peacefully and quickly resolve conflicts when
they do arise Act with courage, intelligence and benevolence in
adversarial situations Convert potential enemies into friends
Control your emotions before they control you Now you can
experience the effectiveness of Sun Tzu's teachings even if you
have no previous knowledge of The Art of War. Insightful yet
unobtrusive facing-page commentary explains the subtleties of the
text, allowing you to unlock the power of its teachings and help
prevent and resolve the conflicts in your own life.
This samurai strategy books is the first widely available English
translation of Yamamoto Kansuke's classic treatise on strategy and
tactics. Secrets of the Japanese Art of Warfare is Thomas Cleary's
translation of the seminal writings attributed to Yamamoto Kansuke
on Japanese martial arts and military service. A mysterious man of
humble origins, Yamamoto distinguished himself in the service of
the redoubtable Takeda Shingen. Yamamoto was a career soldier and
founder of the so-called "school of certain victory," from which
the famous Miyamoto Musashi (The Book of Five Rings) emerged. His
school developed the art of discerning situational combat advantage
so that a warrior was able to commit to action only when success
was virtually assured. Translated and accompanied with helpful
insights by Thomas Cleary, one of the foremost translators of the
martial wisdom of Asia, this book is for all persons engaged in
military, law enforcement, or emergency response, as well as for
martial artists, athletes, business executives, diplomats and
politicians.
"The Book of Five Rings " is one of the most insightful texts on
the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian
culture. Written not only for martial artists but for anyone who
wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life,
the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict
that underlies every level of human interaction.
"The Book of Five Rings " was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist
and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Thomas Cleary's
translation is immediately accessible, with an introduction that
presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along
with Musashi's text, Cleary translates here another important
Japanese classic on leadership and strategy, "The Book of Family
Traditions on the Art of War " by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights
the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply
to the way of the warrior.
"Thomas Cleary's translation of Sun Tzu's 2,000 years old The Art
of War makes immediately relevant one of the greatest Chinese
classical texts. Th ere's not a dated maxim or vague prescription
in it. 'To win without fighting is best, ' Sun Tzu said. For him
war was coeval. Absorb this book, and you can throw out all those
contemporary books about managerial leadership".--Newsweek.

In Unlocking the Zen Koan (originally published as No Boundary)
Thomas Cleary translates directly from the Chinese and interprets
Zen Master Wumen's text and commentaries in verse and prose on the
inner meaning of the koans. Cleary then gives us other great
Chinese Zen masters' comments in prose or verse on the same koan.
Cleary's probing, analytic commentaries wrestle with meaning and
shading, explaining principles and practices. Five different steps
to follow in reading the koan begin with its use as a single abrupt
perception, and lead progressively to more intellectual readings,
illustrating the fixations which stand in the way of a true Zen
understanding.
The ancient warrior culture of Japan produced a sophisticated
martial philosophy that we know today as Bushido--the Way of the
Warrior. In "Samurai Wisdom," author Thomas Clearly provides five
important new translations of major Japanese works on Bushido.
The writings of the scholar Yamaga Soko and his disciples are among
the clearest expositions we have of the core ideals and philosophy
underlying the Samurai's disciplined way of life and outlook.
Together they provide an in-depth, practical guide to character
building and conduct according to the precepts of Bushido--a code
for professional warriors that retains as much relevance in today's
world as it had when these works were written 400 years ago.
Yamaga's writings inspired the transformation of the Samurai from a
feudal class of warriors under the command of the Shogun to a group
of powerful individuals with great intellectual, political and
moral leadership and influence. The works translated in "Samurai
Wisdom" for the very first time are as timeless and important today
as the works of Sun Tzu, Musashi and Clausewitz.
The five Japanese works on Bushido translated in "Samurai Wisdom"
are: "The Way of the Knight" by Yamaga Soko "The Warrior's Rule" by
Tsugaru Kodo-shi "Essentials of Military Matters" compiled by
Yamaga Takatsune "The Education of Warriors" by Yamaga Soko "Primer
of Martial Education" by Yamaga Soko

"Instant Zen" presents the teachings of Foyan, a twelfth-century
Chinese Zen master recognized as one of the greatest masters of the
Song dynasty Zen renaissance in China. Returning to the
uncomplicated genuineness of the original and classical Zen
masters, Foyan offers many simple exercises in attention and
thought designed to lead to the awakening of Zen insight into the
real nature of the self. These succinct teachings emphasize
independence and autonomy, and show us how to open our own eyes and
stand on our own two feet, to see directly without delusion and act
on truth without confusion.
Translator Thomas Cleary provides an incisive introduction and
extensive references from traditional Zen sources, placing the work
in both historical and contemporary contexts. Newcomers to Zen will
find this book a useful and sophisticated introduction to authentic
inner Zen practices from an impeccable source, without cultural
exoticism or religious cultism. Instant Zen sheds new light on this
vital tradition, making available the immediacy of Zen practice and
unveiling our innate potential for conscious awakening.
The Blue Cliff Record is a translation of the Pi Yen Lu, a
collection of one hundred Zen koans - the paradoxical teaching
stories used by Zen teachers to go beneath rational thought -
accompanied by commentaries and appreciatory verses from the
teachings of the Chinese Zen masters. Compiled in the twelfth
century, by the great Zen master and poet Hseh-tou Ch'ung-hsien it
is considered to be one of the greatest treasures of Zen literature
and an essential study manual for students of Zen.
"Immortal Sisters" presents life stories and teachings of
distinguished female Taoist adepts who lived from the third to
twelfth centuries. Among them is the poet and mystic Sun Bu-er, who
passed into folklore as one of the famous Seven Immortals and
appears as a character in countless popular novels of China. These
accomplished women, renowned in their own day and in history,
represent a uniquely female heritage of spiritual mastery. Through
poems, stories, teachings, and commentaries, "Immortal Sisters"
sheds light on the spiritual methods taught and practiced by these
women and illustrates the importance of the feminine in Taoism.
Widely read, The Bhagavad Gita is a classic of world spirituality
while The essential companion to The Bhagavad Gita, The Uddhava
Gita has remained overlooked. This new accessible and only English
translation in print of The Uddhava Gita offers a previously
unexplored path to understanding Hinduism and Krishna s wisdom.
Written centuries apart, the ideas of the two dialogues are similar
although their approach and contexts differ. The Bhagavad Gita is
filled with the urgency of battle while The Uddhava Gita takes
place on the eve of Krishna s departure from the world. The Uddhava
Gita offers the reader philosophy, sublime poetry, practical
guidance, and, ultimately, hope for a more complete consciousness
in which the life of the body better reflects the life of the
spirit."
