Er analysiert verbreitete Missverstandnisse der Rede und Praxis mit Bezug auf Gott und entwickelt eine negative philosophische Theologie fur die Gegenwart. Anhand der Frage, "Welchen Sinn hat es, von Gott zu reden?" erarbeitet er ein kritisches Transzendenzverstandnis nach Aufklarung und Moderne und ein innovatives philosophisches Verstandnis der Einzigkeit Gottes, der Gottesbeweise, des Jenseits und der Ewigkeit. Schliesslich behauptet Rentsch im Kontext exemplarischer Analysen zu Kant, Wittgenstein und weiteren Autoren die "Unvermeidbarkeit philosophischer Theologie".
