The development of accurate hormonal assays in recent years has
evoked much interest in the area of anaesthesia and surgery. In an
effort to allow an exchange of ideas and new information in this
area, the First International Symposium on Endocrinology in
Anaesthesia and Surgery was held in Bonn during September 1978. The
contents of this book represent much of the information presented
by the leading authorities in this field. The presentations were
grouped in three areas: 1. Basic problems of endocrinology in
anaesthesia and surgery; 2. The response of the endocrine system to
anaesthesia and surgery; 3. Hormone and anaesthetic management of
endocrine disease. As with any multi-authored text, there is both
repetition and diversity but hopefully the reader will be able to
obtain much of the useful information. As Editors, we wish to
express our deep appreciation to Profes sor R. Frey and
Springer-Verlag for including this book in the series on
"Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine." H. Stoeckel T. Oyama

In April of 1991, 425 partICIpants from 18 countries met in
Hamamatsu in Japan for the 6th International Symposium on Computing
in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (lSCAIC). The meeting was one of
the most spectacular academic and fruitful in the history of
ISCAIC. We had four days of fascinating presentations and
discussions covering many areas of technology in Anesthesia and
intensive care. New technologies were presented and old technology
reexamined. The measures of success of the meeting were the
excellent research material in oral and poster presentations, and
state of the art reviews of the latest issues by distinguished
worldwide key speakers. It must be sure that the meeting was most
effective to promote and disseminate up-to-date information in
these fields across the participating countries. The aim of this
book is to record the exciting achievements of the meeting and
extend them further among our colleagues. We hope the readers of
this book will share the same excitation as well as the latest
information in this speciality. Finally we would like to extend our
deepest gratitude to all participants and others for the
contribution to the compilation of this book. Kazuyuki Ikeda, M.D.
The First International Symposium on "Pain and Kampo (Japanese
Herbal Medicine)" took place in Tokyo in October, 1992. More than
700 registrants participated, with 12 registrants from seven
overseas countries. This book contains summaries of the
presentations at this meeting and is published in order to provide
up-to-date information to a much wider audience. In China,
traditional herbal medicine has been used for more than 3000 years
while in Japan, its use has been documented for more than 1000
years, albeit with some changes to the original Chinese
formulations. Recently there has been a revival of interest in
herbal medicines for several reasons. There is a rapid growth in
the number of senior citizens who frequently require the attention
of modern medicine. In particular, there has been an increase in
the number of patients who suffer from chronic diseases which are
difficult to treat, e.g., arteriosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease,
chronic pain syndromes, etc. It has become evident that traditional
Oriental herbal medicines could playa role in the management of
these and other conditions.
