Scholars nowadays regard nations as changeable constructs in the force-field of politics and culture, and therefore also of literature, and the beginnings of German national consciousness are now dated later than was the case for a long time hitherto. The new insights have far-reaching consequences and are highly relevant today. This is the starting point for the present monograph, which enquires into the literary construction of (pre-)national identity from the perspective of German Studies and subjects current modes of interpretation to critical scrutiny.

'Humanism and historiography', 'Humanism and monastic culture' - these areas of research form the framework for the present study of the voluminous chronicle by Hermannus Piscator, a Benedictine humanist of Mainz (d. 1526). Piscator's chronicle was long believed to be lost and is now presented for the first time. It unites in a very specific way such traditional categories of the genre as the town and the bishopric chronicle as well as the national history as it was formed under the influence of Humanism. This new analysis of Piscator's work, his method of working and his personal contacts with fellow humanists throws a new light on neglected fields of German Humanism and leads to surprising conclusions about the formation of modern categories of historiography.

Der Augsburger Stadtschreiber und Humanist Konrad Peutinger (1465-1547) besass die wohl umfangreichste und inhaltlich am breitesten gefacherte Gelehrtenbibliothek seiner Zeit noerdlich der Alpen. Die zeitliche Spannbreite der rund 6.000 Druckwerke reicht von den Anfangen des Buchdrucks bis zu Peutingers Tod. Hinzu kommen etwa 200 Handschriften mit einer Fulle von Texten aus fast allen Wissensgebieten. Obwohl die Bibliothek seit dem 18. Jahrhundert nicht mehr als geschlossene Sammlung existiert, lassen sich noch rund 40 Prozent des ursprunglichen Bestands nachweisen. Durch mehrere uberlieferte historische Kataloge, darunter zwei von Peutinger selbst geschriebene, ist der ehemalige Umfang der Bibliothek so gut dokumentiert, dass auch die nicht mehr vorhandenen Teile des Bestands weitgehend rekonstruiert werden koennen. Der zweite Band uber die Bibliothek Konrad Peutingers ist den separat aufgestellten juristischen Buchern gewidmet. Wie bei Band 1 bilden die beiden autographen Kataloge Peutingers, die somit vollstandig ediert sind, die Grundlage fur die Rekonstruktion. Erneut werden nicht nur die erhaltenen Bucher beschrieben, sondern auch die heute verschollenen Bestande moeglichst exakt ermittelt. Der juristische Bibliotheksteil umfasst vor allem die Kommentarliteratur zum roemischen wie zum kanonischen Recht. Diese Werke dienten ihm uber Jahrzehnte hinweg als wichtiges Arbeitsinstrument bei seinen beruflichen Aufgaben. Mit der Rekonstruktion dieses Teils der Bibliothek Peutingers ist die Grundlage fur eine fundierte Erforschung der praktischen Tatigkeit eines der einflussreichsten politischen Berater und Juristen im deutschen Sprachraum in der ersten Halfte 16. Jahrhunderts geschaffen.
