What is a contract in Islam? Is it an aspect of Muslim religion or
of secular life? How much has it changed over the centuries?
Undertaking a search that spans revelation, legal tradition, and
the reality of the Muslim world, this book explores the Islamic
contract (‘aqd in Arabic) as a ‘city’ at the crossroads of
convergent paths of translation, comparison, and law in context. In
particular, the book shows that only by re-orienting traditional
categories of Western law-religion toward the East can an
alternative path of discovery for the ‘aqd be advanced. Hence,
through a fortuitous encounter with an Arab Girl, the reader will
(re-)visit the Temple of Western modernity and explore a city ruled
by Towers of dialectical forces, carrying a hermeneutical Ring that
combines dialectics, Islamic studies, and media theory. This
interdisciplinary approach will not only enrich our knowledge of
the ‘aqd but also make it more understandable as a cultural and
social construction to which both Muslims and non-Muslims have
participated in forging its multiple representations. By inviting
the readers ‘to know who they are’ while looking at her, the
Arab Girl is already waiting for us to listen to the Islamic
contract in a new way. By applying a distinctive law and religion
approach to the study of the contract in Islam, the book provides a
comprehensive exploration of a topic that is of interest to legal
and economic comparatists as well as to readers in anthropology,
Islamic and cultural studies, and it is also of topical meaning for
today’s international lawyers and the operators of an
increasingly multicultural and transnational market.
Millions of people have fled from conflicts and persecution in all
parts of this Northeast African country, and many thousands more
have been enslaved as human spoils of war. In this book, refugees
and abductees recount their escapes from the wars in Darfur and
South Sudan, from political and religious persecution, and from
abduction by militias. In their own words, they recount life before
their displacement and the reasons for their flight. They describe
life in the major stations on the "refugee railroads:" in the
desert camps of Khartoum, the underground communities of Cairo, the
humanitarian metropolis of Kakuma refugee camp, and the
still-growing internally displaced persons camps in Darfur.
NARRATORS INCLUDE: ABUK, a native of South Sudan now living in
Boston, who survived ten years as a slave after being captured by
an Arab militia. MARCY AND ROSE, best friends who have spent the
vast majority of their lives in a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya.
They remember almost nothing of their former homes in Sudan.
MATHOK, who struggled to find opportunities as a refugee in Cairo,
but eventually fell into a world of gangs and violence. JOHN, a
teacher fighting to keep a school for Sudanese refugees alive in a
poverty-stricken slum in Nairobi.
Through a celebration and critique of the comics character of
Wonder Woman, this collection takes up the historical trends that
have changed the world of comics, American popular culture, and
feminism. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the comic book super
heroine Wonder Woman in 2016, Kent State University and the
Cleveland Public Library partnered to celebrate the intersections
of public literacy, comics, and feminism in a jointly sponsored
symposium. Centering on the figure of Wonder Woman, the special
issue of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics that this volume
is based on collected the presentations and interviews from the
event. This book will fortuitously appear in honor of Wonder
Woman’s 80th anniversary and pays respect to "herstory" while
recognizing her perpetual relevance to our present day, and beyond.
Like its progenitor, it reflects the historical trends that have
changed the world of comics, American popular culture, and feminism
so relevant to our current moment. It also highlights an interview
with Mariko Tamaki, the current writer of Wonder Woman comics, as
well as new editorial reflections in a Foreword and an Afterword.
Today the media arts not only address the great themes of our
times, they inhabit the very media of which they speak. The
contemporary is global, but only because of the media that enable
globalisation. Those media are almost nowhere apparent in the
mainstream practice of art that we see in biennials from Venice to
Sao Paolo. The media arts reflect back to us our present condition,
and in the archive present us with the ghosts of what we were, and
what we failed to become. This book brings the reader into the
centre of these strange encounters, introducing us to the rich
legacies and futures of the most important arts of the last hundred
years. It also looks ahead to the future and asks what happens to
the condition of being human within the new constellation into
which we are entering?

A thought provoking and scholarly compendium of essays on various
important aspects of Islamic finance. The book is wider ranging
than its title suggests; the key chapters do focus on the EU, but
there are broader and particularly interesting topics including
women and Islam and financial stability and development in the
context of Islam. Overall a solid assessment of the progress
Islamic finance has made in Europe.' - John Presley, Loughborough
University, UKHighlighting the impact of current globalization on
financial markets, this topical book challenges the universality of
Western property rights and interprets Islamic finance in Europe as
part of a plural financial system, where different conceptions of
economic justice(s) co-exist and influence each other. The
contributing authors analyse key economic development and social
integration issues from an Islamic perspective and outline the
European approach to accommodating Islamic finance, with particular
regard to the peculiarities of individual nation-states. Set in
this context, the book presents financial pluralism as a device to
enhance a level playing field in the global marketplace, as well as
to foster a plural open society. Providing a comprehensive and
methodological guide to Islamic finance in Europe, this book will
prove an illuminating and informative read for academics, students
and policymakers with an interest in the impact on financial
regulation of an increasingly globalized world. Contributors: S.S.
