Data driven science has become a major decision-making aid for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Computational and visual analytics enables effective exploration and sense making of large and complex data through the deployment of appropriate data science methods, meaningful visualization and human-information interaction. This edited volume covers state-of-the-art theory, method, models, design, evaluation and application in computational and visual analytics in desktop, mobile and immersive environments for analysing biomedical and health data. This companion presents a transnational and interdisciplinary study of refugee narratives. In response to the oversaturation of sociological, governmental, and journalistic narratives about refugees, this book examines the narratives refugees tell to, for, and about themselves. Engaging a rich variety of genres-fiction, autobiography, prose, poetry, graphic novels, film, photography, performance, social media-the chapters included in this anthology examine how conditions of forced displacement and encounters with different asylum regimes shape the form and content of refugee cultural production. Chapters are organized around three key forms-storytelling, testimony, (auto)ethnography-and four key themes-memory (and forgetting), human rights (and its limitations), border-crossing (and nation-states), and cartographies (of displacement and diaspora). This volume will be of interest to researchers, teachers, students, and practitioners. In addition to analyzing refugee narratives, contributors offer pedagogical strategies for how to teach, discuss, and engage refugee narratives in the contemporary political moment.
This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Conferences ICCASA and ICTCC 2017, held in November 2017 in Tam Ky City, Vietnam. The 23 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 31 submissions. The papers of ICCASA cover a wide spectrum in the area of context-aware-systems. Visual communication through graphical and sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds and cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, visual languages and multi-media processing. It has been successfully employed in knowledge discovery, end-user programming, modeling, rapid systems prototyping, education, and design activities by people of many disciplines including architects, artists, children, engineers, and scientists. In addition, visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and Web technology, and electronic mobile devices. This manuscript provides the cutting-edge techniques, approaches and the latest ongoing researches in the context of visual information communication. It is a collection of 24 chapters selected from more than 60 submissions to the VINCI'09 - 2009 Visual Information Communications International Conference, that is held in Sydney Australia, September 2009. These chapters were selected through a stringent review process to ensure their high standard in quality, significance and relevance. Each chapter was reviewed by at least two international Program Committee members of VINCI'09. In a world increasingly shaped by displacement and migration, refuge is both a coveted right and an elusive promise for millions of people. While refuge is conventionally understood as legal protection, it also transcends narrow judicial definitions. In Lived Refuge, Vinh Nguyen reconceptualizes refuge as an ongoing affective experience and lived relation, rather than a fixed category whose legitimacy is derived from the state. Focusing on Southeast Asian diasporas that formed in the wake of the Vietnam War, Nguyen examines three affective experiences—gratitude, resentment, and resilience—to reveal the actively lived dimensions of refuge. Through multifaceted analyses of literary and cultural productions, Nguyen argues that the meaning of refuge emerges from how displaced people negotiate the kinds of "safety" and "protection" that are offered to (and withheld from) them. In doing so, he lays the framework for an original and compelling understanding of contemporary refugee subjectivity.
