Georg Heing, a charming, erudite man, and a ?rst rate mathematician died un- pectedly of a heart attack on May 10, 2005. Georg is survived by his wife Gerti, his daughter Susanne, and his son Peter. We have lost one the leading experts in the ?eld of structured matrices, a wonderful colleague, and a terri?c friend. GeorgHeinig'sresults,approaches,andhisscienti?ctastein?uencedourc- munity of researchers working on structured matrices. In fact, the community's focus grew to re?ect his interdisciplinary vision ranging from applications (e.g., in systems and control theory and signal processing) through fundamental mat- matics(structuredmatrices,periodicJacobi,Toeplitz,andWiener-Hopfoperators, classesofsingularintegraloperators,resultantsandBezoutiansforoperator-valued polynomials and continual analogs thereof) to numerical analysis and fast al- rithms. The broad spectrum of Georg Heinig's interests are represented in this collection. Georg served as an Associate Editor of two top journals: Integral Equations andOperatorTheoryand LinearAlgebraand Its Applications. This volumestarts with two eulogies published earlier by IEOT and LAA. The ?rst one, published in IEOT is by Albrecht Bot .. tcher, Israel Gohberg (who was Georg's advisor during his Ph. D. studies), and Bernd Silbermann. The second one, published in LAA is by Karla Rost who collaborated with Georg during last three decades until day of his death. They have produced together more than 30 papers and a monograph.

Dimension Reduction of Large-Scale Systems - Proceedings of a Workshop held in Oberwolfach, Germany, October 19-25, 2003... Dimension Reduction of Large-Scale Systems - Proceedings of a Workshop held in Oberwolfach, Germany, October 19-25, 2003 (Paperback, 2005 ed.)
Peter Benner, Volker Mehrmann, Danny C. Sorensen
R4,746 Discovery Miles 47 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the past decades, model reduction has become an ubiquitous tool in analysis and simulation of dynamical systems, control design, circuit simulation, structural dynamics, CFD, and many other disciplines dealing with complex physical models. The aim of this book is to survey some of the most successful model reduction methods in tutorial style articles and to present benchmark problems from several application areas for testing and comparing existing and new algorithms. As the discussed methods have often been developed in parallel in disconnected application areas, the intention of the mini-workshop in Oberwolfach and its proceedings is to make these ideas available to researchers and practitioners from all these different disciplines.

Applications of Differential-Algebraic Equations: Examples and Benchmarks (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Stephen Campbell, Achim... Applications of Differential-Algebraic Equations: Examples and Benchmarks (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Stephen Campbell, Achim Ilchmann, Volker Mehrmann, Timo Reis
R2,513 Discovery Miles 25 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume encompasses prototypical, innovative and emerging examples and benchmarks of Differential-Algebraic Equations (DAEs) and their applications, such as electrical networks, chemical reactors, multibody systems, and multiphysics models, to name but a few. Each article begins with an exposition of modelling, explaining whether the model is prototypical and for which applications it is used. This is followed by a mathematical analysis, and if appropriate, a discussion of the numerical aspects including simulation. Additionally, benchmark examples are included throughout the text. Mathematicians, engineers, and other scientists, working in both academia and industry either on differential-algebraic equations and systems or on problems where the tools and insight provided by differential-algebraic equations could be useful, would find this book resourceful.

Linear Algebra (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015): Joerg Liesen, Volker Mehrmann Linear Algebra (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015)
Joerg Liesen, Volker Mehrmann
R2,118 Discovery Miles 21 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This self-contained textbook takes a matrix-oriented approach to linear algebra and presents a complete theory, including all details and proofs, culminating in the Jordan canonical form and its proof. Throughout the development, the applicability of the results is highlighted. Additionally, the book presents special topics from applied linear algebra including matrix functions, the singular value decomposition, the Kronecker product and linear matrix equations. The matrix-oriented approach to linear algebra leads to a better intuition and a deeper understanding of the abstract concepts, and therefore simplifies their use in real world applications. Some of these applications are presented in detailed examples. In several 'MATLAB-Minutes' students can comprehend the concepts and results using computational experiments. Necessary basics for the use of MATLAB are presented in a short introduction. Students can also actively work with the material and practice their mathematical skills in more than 300 exercises.

Numerische Mathematik (German, Paperback, 2004 ed.): Matthias Bollhofer, Volker Mehrmann Numerische Mathematik (German, Paperback, 2004 ed.)
Matthias Bollhofer, Volker Mehrmann
R1,222 Discovery Miles 12 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days
