About 20% of people with epilepsy have seizures which are resistant to anticonvulsant medications. These drug-resistant seizures are called intractable', and the patients who have them - about 1 in 500 of the general population - present a major challenge to neurologists and epilepsy associations. The present volume describes the symptomatology of the major intractable' syndromes, the most appropriate drugs for each, and the possibilities for surgical control. Research related to the causes and effects of unchecked seizures is presented, and new directions in prevention and therapy are discussed.
A look at the Commonwealth from the founding of the Secretariat in 1965 to the 14th Commonwealth Games in 1990. The book is divided into three parts. "Structure" looks at origins, the Heads of Government Meetings, the Secretariat and the Commonwealth in a global setting. "Issues" covers race, Africa, inequalities and the security of small states. The largest part, on "Functioning" looks at regionalism, functional organizations, professional linkages, peoples, sport and the role of the Queen as Head of the Commonwealth. The book concludes with an "Agenda for the 1990s".
This book contains a detailed analysis of American, British, Australian and New Zealand strategic planning during the early years of the Cold War, including their plans for fighting World War III in the Middle East, and the diplomatic negotiations leading up to the security treaty signed by Australia, New Zealand and the United States in 1951. It considers the problems raised by Britain's exclusion from Anzus and the subsequent creation of Seato and the British Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve in Malaya.

This lucid guide meets the need, so often expressed in the 1990s, for an up-to-date assessment of the contemporary Commonwealth. It has a succinct section on its historical background and gives more attention than any previous works to symbols and to the 'People's Commonwealth' of voluntary organizations, sports and business. It highlights critical questions of balance that have emerged between the relative roles of governments and official agencies, voluntary associations, and private business.

Part 1 looks at origins, the Heads of Government Meetings, the Secretariat and the Commonwealth in a global setting. Part 2 covers race, Africa, inequalities and the security of small states. The final part, on Functioning, looks at regionalism, functional organisations, professional linkages, peoples, sport and the role of the Queen as Head of the Commonwealth. It concludes with an 'Agenda for the 1990s'.
Lean and Mean Process Improvement is a straight forward presentation of the tools of Lean Six Sigma process improvement. It touches on market analysis, team building, easy to use graphical tools and easy to understand explanations of statistical tools. This approach is not by accident. Process improvement, including Lean Six Sigma, has too long been focused on corporate wide roll-outs and "quality programs." That approach to improving business performance is based more upon words than deeds, more upon supervision than leadership. Lean and Mean Process Improvement is written to be used by people at all organizational levels. This bottom-up approach will help senior management to understand processes "out on the floor" and how they impact the customer chain all the way to the end user. This alignment will help make Lean Six Sigma rollouts more successful The author wants one very important concept to evolve from this book. Process improvement, Lean Six Sigma or otherwise, can and should be fun and satisfying. So let's get started Note from the author. I have been involved in process improvement for over 17 years. My experience gives me a unique perspective on how to import process improvement into an organization's culture in a way that will stick. This book is designed to help the individual improve their margin at the office, cubicle, and departmental level. As we all know, these are the locations where the rubber meets the road. Good luck and have fun.
