This volume presents a process for developing expert systems. As
the field of instructional technology matures it is becoming clear
that technological process, not technological devices, is the
single most important factor in designing effective instruction.
Computers as devices are helpful, but their primary advantage may
be the discipline placed on thinking and design processes by using
them. The process used when examining a problem determines the
quality of information entered into a program and the ultimate
effectiveness of the solution. The process in this volume is
intended for small-scale expert system solutions that contribute to
the solution of instructional problems. Hardware independent, the
volume focuses on narrowly defined examples intended for small
personal computer systems. Particular attention is paid to problems
associated with education and training.
"Building Expert Systems in Training and Education" has one
primary function: to help instructional designers derive the
components of a problem and enter it into an expert system shell.
It is totally process-oriented and focuses on the front-end
knowledge engineering process. It provides a repertoire of
practical tools and processes that can be used to select, define,
and structure problems. Three types of examples are used to
illustrate three ways to use expert systems: for instructional
support, for instructional decision making, and for an
instructional job aid. Each chapter is followed by a list of
learning activities to facilitate practice and consolidation. When
appropriate, answers or examples to the learning activities is
given. This is a practical guide for instructional technology
educators and students, and business and industrial training
professionals.
Originally published in 1992, this book is about political culture.
It examines developments in the social sciences and integrates them
into a theoretical explanation of historical changes in political
values. The starting point is the premise that political culture is
rooted in the interaction between individual thinking and social
norms. Through discourse, individual conceptions of social life are
transformed and, interactively, social norms and cultural
orientations as well. The first two parts of the book explore these
issues theoretically. The second two examine them empirically by
showing the ways that political cultures have changed over time. In
the modern period the differences in the political cultures of
capitalist and communist systems are contrasted; although both
coneptualize social life in terms of property accumulation, they
utilize different cultural orientations to reduce institutional
transaction costs. The way the tensions between these two systems
can be resolved is also explored.

An efficient air transport system is critical to countries
attaining and sustaining healthy economies in an increasingly
interconnected world economy. Competing successfully now means
quick shipping over long distances at reasonable rates. Societies
also prosper when people from different countries can travel around
the world using efficient transport. This volume includes
literature surveys and original empirical research examining
airline efficiency in the twenty first century. Topics cover
airline productivity, sources of airline efficiency, the cost and
scope of operations in airline transport; airline productivity for
different global regions; methodologies estimating productivity
growth and efficiency. Further chapters on sources of airline
efficiency examine fuel efficiency differences, efficiency in
different stages of production, and the contributions of
technological change, mergers, and low-cost carrier competition to
efficiency. Chapters on the cost and scope of operations examine
all-cargo carrier efficiency, gains from airline/high speed-rail
cooperation, and airport economies of scope in passenger and
freight operations.
This volume concentrates on research information on the beneficial
effects of nitrates and their fate in the environment. Adopting an
integrated approach it covers the agricultural, environmental and
medical aspects of this emotive topic. In addition, there is an
extensive description of the biochemistry of nitrates in plants,
animals and humans including the positive aspects as well as the
hazards.
This book collects contributions written by well-known
statisticians and econometricians to acknowledge Leopold Simar s
far-reaching scientific impact on Statistics and Econometrics
throughout his career. The papers contained herein were presented
at a conference in
Louvain-la-Neuve in May 2009 in honor of his retirement. The
contributions cover a broad variety of issues surrounding
frontier
estimation, which Leopold Simar has contributed much to over the
past two decades, as well as related issues such as semiparametric
regression and models for censored data.

This useful work presents a current overview of key genes
involved in the control of apoptosis research together with
thoughts on future prospects and clinical applications. While there
are several books written on apoptosis, this one deals specifically
with its regulation.

Clinical Anthropology 2.0 presents a new approach to applied
medical anthropology that engages with clinical spaces, healthcare
systems, care delivery and patient experience, public health, as
well as the education and training of physicians. In this book,
Jason W. Wilson and Robert D. Baer highlight the key role that
medical anthropologists can play on interdisciplinary care teams by
improving patient experience and medical education. Included
throughout are real life examples of this approach, such as the
training of medical and anthropology students, creation of clinical
pathways, improvement of patient experiences and communication, and
design patient-informed interventions. This book includes
contributions by Heather Henderson, Emily Holbrook, Kilian Kelly,
Carlos Osorno-Cruz, and Seiichi Villalona.
Using the Bible as my structural outline, I have, with much
imagination, charted the story of the spirit world, as angels,
demons, God, and Satan struggle to claim ownership of the human
race. The climax of this age-old battle is the appearance of God's
champion, Jesus, and the solution He alone offers to each one of
us. The story begins in eternity past and concludes in eternity yet
to come. I hope you can identify yourself somewhere in the stream
of traffic, and, in the knowledge of the accomplishment God's
Champion made real, you can with thanksgiving write a personal
postscript, "And we lived happily ever after."
Ecotoxicology is the evaluation of toxic effects within the
environment, typically within one specific ecosystem, like a
forest, stream, or lake. For years now, ecotoxicological studies
have tended to focus on one toxicant at a time. But that isn't how
an ecosystem encounters toxicants (or stresses): there may be
several elements at work in the air, several more in the water, and
still more already within the soil of any given ecosystem, and all
have some level of toxic influence on that ecosystem. Multiple
Stresses in Ecosystems presents the state-of-the-art in determining
the effects of these multiple impacts upon ecosystems. Resulting
from a vanguard conference originally held in 1993 at UC Davis,
this new work is divided into three sections that present
methodolgies for assessing the health of an ecosystem; the effects
of multiple toxicological impacts upon an ecosystem, and which
tools are worth using to assess these dangers. Environmental
scientists, chemists, toxicologists, risk analysts, and probably
the entire membership of SETAC will find need for this book, as
will wetlands scientists, ecologists, and research biologists.
