Manganese (Mn) oxides are among the most reactive minerals in the
earth's surface environment, and play a significant role in
adsorption, co-precipitation and redox reactions, affecting
biogeochemical cycles of numerous nutrients and contaminants. In
addition, manganese oxides are widely applied as absorbents, ion
sieves, chemical oxidants and catalysts for environmental
remediation and pollution control. There are, however, still many
aspects poorly understood in terms of the environmental
geochemistry of manganese oxides, such as biogenic formation
mechanisms, detailed crystal structure of nanocrystalline phases,
electron transfer paths in redox reactions, adsorption mechanisms
of contaminants on surfaces, physiochemical factors controlling the
contents of structural Mn(III) and vacant sites that largely
determine Mn oxide reactivity, and the role of Mn(III) in the above
processes. This book aims to bring together advances on manganese
oxide environmental biogeochemistry from leading scientists in
multiple disciplines, e.g., mineralogy, geochemistry, soil science
and environmental engineering. A number of frontier research topics
are included in the book, such as in-situ characterization of Mn
oxide reactivity with As and Cr, kinetics and molecular-scale
mechanisms of metal oxidation by mangnese oxides, mechanistic
understanding of metal sorption through density function theory,
the role of surface edge sites of birnessites in metal(loid)
sorption, reactivity of natural crytomelane, pathways of
phyllomanganate transformation to todorokite, water-oxidation
catalysis by manganese oxides, in situ As immobilization using
stabilized Fe-Mn binary oxides, and synthesis of Li ion-sieves from
biogenic oxides and stability of colloidal Mn oxides. The book
should be of interest to scientists and engineers in a broad range
of disciplines, such as geochemistry, soil science, mineralogy,
microbiology, materials science, and environment engineering, as
well as graduate students who are engaged in research on manganese
oxide biogeochemistry and the engineering application of Mn-bearing
materials.
The New York Convention is regarded as one of the most successful
treaties in the past fifty-five years. Its simplicity and brevity
in wording but complexity and diversity in application have
triggered endless discussions, debates and writings. Rethinking the
New York Convention - A Law and Economics Approach for the first
time offers a unique jurisprudence-oriented analysis by applying
two major analytic approaches, namely Darwinian legal theory and
game theory. Four key topics are analysed in this book: the
evolution of the treaty, the competition among various
jurisdictions, lex mercatoria and governing law in arbitration, and
the doctrine of public policy. This choice of key topics offers the
opportunity to look into these so-called core dilemmas surrounding
the New York Convention from different angles, inspiring the reader
to think outside the box. In addition, against the background of
the current financial crisis, this book focuses on the use of the
New York Convention in the context of global governance and
discusses the need for a reform of the existing regime of
cross-border transactions and activities. Rethinking the New York
Convention - A Law and Economics Approach explores the topic in a
refreshing style and will be of use for anyone who is interested in
arbitration or law and economics.
WHO WOULD YOU SACRIFICE AT THE ALTAR OF AMBITION?
Singapore, 1996. Before Arin, Genevieve Yang was an only child. Living with her parents and grandmother in a single-room flat in Bedok, she is saddled with an unexpected sibling when Arin appears, the shameful legacy of a grandfather long believed to be dead.
At once collaborators and sisters, Gen and Arin grow up inseparable, navigating the intensity of life in working-class Singapore - where urgent insistence on achievement demands self-immolation in the realms of imagination, work, and play. But as the rapidly modernising, winner-takes-all world threatens to leave one behind as the other's star rises exponentially, the sisters must weigh their allegiances and bonds, the cost of success and ultimately reckon with who they've become. What results is a story that cracks open the fault lines of Singaporean society, our desperate need for acceptance and our yearning to be loved.
Vivid and visceral, The Original Daughter is a breathtaking act of empathy by a new literary star.
The Research Handbook on Trade Wars presents an informative and
in-depth account of the origins, dynamics, and implications of
trade wars, which are growing both in scale and scope in today's
increasingly interdependent global economy. Timely and
comprehensive, it provides a holistic understanding of trade wars,
including not only the domestic and international factors that
influence the pattern of trade war onset and escalation, but also
the stakeholders and processes that shape the outcomes of such
highly intense trade conflicts. Leading scholars in the field
present original and thought-provoking research material,
critically engage with academic and policy debates, and make
theoretical contributions as well as valuable policy
recommendations. In addition to its in-depth analysis of the
global, domestic, political, and economic origins of trade wars,
this Research Handbook also examines the variation in the scope of
trade wars, the forum for dispute settlement, the factors that
influence the pattern of dispute escalation, and the linkages
between national security considerations and commercial conflicts.
Providing the frameworks necessary for understanding the political
and economic logics of trade wars, this Handbook will be a valuable
source of reference for researchers, government officials,
businesses, and post-graduate students interested in international
political economy, international economics, economic statecraft,
public policy, and international relations.

China is now considered a tech superpower in many areas. This book
illustrates certain aspects and case studies of China's
technological developments and further analyzes them under various
areas like coal energy, housing, connectivity, digital and space
technologies. Furthermore, it examines technological developments
in the periphery of China, focusing especially on Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region (HKSAR). This book does not pretend to be
comprehensive in its coverage albeit surveys a spectrum of sectors
in China and Hong Kong to get an idea of their developments. By
peering into China through the mainland continental perspective and
also looking into China from its periphery (e.g., 'Greater China'
perspectives from HKSAR), this book provides readers with the broad
contours of technological development in China through a
multidisciplinary area studies perspective.
