Jesus asked the man his name, and he answered, "Legion, for we
are many."--Mark 5:9
A young boy is found horribly murdered in a mock crucifixion. Is
the murderer the elderly woman who witnessed the crime? A
neurologist who can no longer bear the pain life inflicts on its
victims? A psychiatrist with a macabre sense of humor and a guilty
secret? A mysterious mental patient, locked in silent
isolation?
Lieutenant Kinderman follows a bewildering trail that links all
these people, confronting a new enigma at every turn even as more
murders surface. Why does each victim suffer the same dreadful
mutilations? Why are two of the victims priests? Is there a
connection between "these" crimes and another series of murders
that took place twelve years ago--and supposedly ended with the
death of the killer?
"Legion" is a novel of breathtaking energy and suspense. But more
than this, it is an extraordinary journey into the uncharted depths
of the human mind and the most agonizing questions of the human
condition.
The answers are revealed in a climax so stunning that it could only
have been written by the author of "The Exorcist"--William Peter
Blatty.
"Presenting a historical analysis of the evolution of systematics
during the last one hundred years, Milestones in Systematics
reviews many of the major issues in systematic theory and practice
that have driven the working methods of systematics during the 20th
century and looks at the issues most likely to preoccupy
systematists in the immediate future. The book highlights:
This unstoppable publishing phenomenon was the inspiration behind
one of the most successful horror movies of all time. A powerful
presence has taken possession of the 12-year-old daughter of a film
star. The ensuing battle between a doubt-ridden priest and the
unspeakable horror within the girl is a classic war of good versus
evil.
Father Damien Karras: 'Where is Regan?' Regan MacNeil: 'In here.
With us.' The terror begins unobtrusively. Noises in the attic. In
the child's room, an odd smell, the displacement of furniture, an
icy chill. At first, easy explanations are offered. Then
frightening changes begin to appear in eleven-year-old Regan.
Medical tests fail to shed any light on her symptoms, but it is as
if a different personality has invaded her body. Father Damien
Karras, a Jesuit priest, is called in. Is it possible that a
demonic presence has possessed the child? Exorcism seems to be the
only answer... First published in 1971, The Exorcist became a
literary phenomenon and inspired one of the most shocking films
ever made. This edition, polished and expanded by the author,
includes new dialogue, a new character and a chilling new extended
scene, provides an unforgettable reading experience that has lost
none of its power to shock and continues to thrill and terrify new
readers.
The product of research and investigation by a team of sixteen
authors, Reagan versus the Sandinistas is the most comprehensive
and current study to date of the Reagan administration's mounting
campaign to reverse the Sandinista revolution. The authors
thoroughly examine all major aspects of Reagan's "low-intensity
war," from the U.S. government's attempts at economic
destabilization to direct CIA sabotage and the sponsorship of the
contras or freedom fighters. They also explore less-public tactics
such as electronic penetration, behind-the-scenes manipulation of
religious and ethnic tensions, and harassment of U.S. Nicaraguan
specialists and "fellow travelers." The book concludes with a
consideration of the impact of these activities and their
implications for international law, U.S. interests, U.S. polity,
and Nicaragua itself. Reagan versus the Sandinistas is designed not
only for courses on Latin America, U.S. foreign policy, and
international relations, but also for students, scholars, and
others interested in understanding one of the most massive, complex
efforts-short of direct intervention-organized by the United States
to overthrow the government of another country.
Organophosphorus Chemistry provides a comprehensive annual review
of the literature. Coverage includes phosphines and their
chalcogenides, phosphonium salts, low coordination number
phosphorus compounds, penta- and hexa-coordinated compounds,
tervalent phosphorus acids, nucleotides and nucleic acids, ylides
and related compounds, and phosphazenes. The series will be of
value to research workers in universities, government and
industrial research organisations, whose work involves the use of
organophosphorus compounds. It provides a concise but comprehensive
survey of a vast field of study with a wide variety of
applications, enabling the reader to rapidly keep abreast of the
latest developments in their specialist areas. Specialist
Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage
of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by
experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique
service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical
in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For
over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor,
the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting
developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual
Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no
longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist
Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still
existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes
covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more
general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a
'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the
fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some
titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their
emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a
new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current
list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside
flap of this volume.
Drawing on a wide range of up-to-date research, Employment
Relations under Coalition Government critically examines
developments in UK employment relations during the period of
Conservative-Liberal Democrat government between 2010 and 2015,
against the background of the 2007-08 financial crisis, subsequent
economic recession and in the context of the primacy accorded to
neo-liberal austerity. Contributions cover a series of important
and relevant topics in a rigorous, yet accessible manner: labour
market change and the rise of zero-hours contracts and other forms
of precarious employment; policy development relating to young
people's employment; the coalition's welfare-to-work agenda; its
programme of employment law reform and its approach to workplace
equality and health and safety; labour migration; the experience of
the trade unions under the coalition and their responses; and
developments in employment relations in the public services. This
book addresses the broader issues relating to the coalition period,
such as the implications of political and regulatory change for
employment relations, including the greater devolution of powers to
Scotland and Wales, and locates UK developments in comparative
perspective. The book concludes with an assessment of the prospects
for employment relations in the aftermath of the May 2015
Conservatives election victory.
Georgetown, Washington D.C., 1973. Actress and divorced mother
Chris MacNeil starts to experience 'difficulties' with her usually
sweet-natured eleven-year-old daughter Regan. The child becomes
afflicted by spasms, convulsions and unsettling amnesiac episodes;
these abruptly worsen into violent fits of appalling foul-mouthed
curses, accompanied by physical mutation. Medical science is
baffled by Regan's plight and, in her increasing despair, Chris
turns to troubled priest and psychiatrist Damien Karras, who
immediately recognises something profoundly malevolent in Regan's
distorted fetures and speech. On Karras's recommendation, the
Church summons Father Merrin, a specialist in the exorcism of
demons . . . William Peter Blatty scripted this version of his own
best-selling novel for director William Friedkin, and was rewarded
with an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay of 1973. This publication
also includes the texts of the film's legendary 'lost scenes' and
excised dialogue which shed additional light on The Exorcist's
profound darkness.
Fundamentals of Clinical Psychopharmacology provides up-to-date,
evidence-based and unbiased information about psychopharmacology.
It spans the range of the discipline, from mode of action and side
effects of drugs to meta-analyses of clinical trials. It is
anchored to practice guidelines produced by the UK National
Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the British
Association for Psychopharmacology (BAP). Care has been taken to
provide an international perspective that makes it equally useful
to practitioners in the US and other countries. The book grew out
of BAP courses that set the standard for professional
psychopharmacological education in the UK. This latest edition is
fully updated and provides, in a concise and easy-to-read format,
key facts about currently used psychotropic drugs, set in the
context of the neuroscience of the disorders they treat. It also

prescribing. Key references, including the clinical studies
discussed, are provided at the end of the chapter along with
suggestions for further reading. Intended to be a frequently
updated, affordable, concise and practical resource, it meets the
needs of trainees and practitioners seeking to keep abreast of the
state of the art in psychopharmacology.
Originally published in 1971, The Exorcist, one of the most
controversial novels ever written, went on to become a literary
phenomenon: It spent fifty-seven weeks on the New York Times
bestseller list, seventeen consecutively at number one. Inspired by
a true story of a child's demonic possession in the 1940s, William
Peter Blatty created an iconic novel that focuses on Regan, the
eleven-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington,
D.C. A small group of overwhelmed yet determined individuals must
rescue Regan from her unspeakable fate, and the drama that ensues
is gripping and unfailingly terrifying.
Two years after its publication, The Exorcist was, of course,
turned into a wildly popular motion picture, garnering ten Academy
Award nominations. On opening day of the film, lines of the novel's
fans stretched around city blocks. In Chicago, frustrated
moviegoers used a battering ram to gain entry through the double
side doors of a theater. In Kansas City, police used tear gas to
disperse an impatient crowd who tried to force their way into a
cinema. The three major television networks carried footage of
these events; CBS's Walter Cronkite devoted almost ten minutes to
the story. The Exorcist was, and is, more than just a novel and a
film: it is a true landmark.
Purposefully raw and profane, The Exorcist still has the
extraordinary ability to disturb readers and cause them to forget
that it is "just a story." Published here in this beautiful
fortieth anniversary edition, it remains an unforgettable reading
experience and will continue to shock and frighten a new generation
of readers.

This critical textbook looks beyond the immediate data on knife
crime to try and make sense of what is a global phenomenon. Yet it
especially explores why the UK in particular has become so
preoccupied by this form of interpersonal, often youthful,
violence. The book explores knife crime in its global and
historical context and examines crime patterns including the
"second wave" of knife crime in Britain. It then incorporates new
empirical data to explore key themes including: police responses,
popular narratives, and the various interests benefiting from the
'knife crime industry'. It captures the "voices" of those impacted
by knife crime including young people, community leaders, and youth
work practitioners. Drawing on criminology, sociology, cultural
studies and history, the book argues that the problem is firmly
located at the intersection of a series of concerns about class,
race, gender and generation that are a product of British history
and its global past. It seeks to trace the several roots of the
contemporary knife crime 'epidemic', ultimately to propose newer
and alternative strategies for responding to it. It encourages a
critical engagement with this subject, with the inclusion of some
learning exercises for undergraduate students and above in the the
social sciences, whilst also speaking to researchers, policy-makers
and practitioners.
A pioneering classic in Dow Theory. "If you are a serious student of investing, you owe it to yourself to 'go back to the future' and read this book." --Charles B. Carlson, Editor of "Dow Theory Forecast". The Dow Theory is consistently one of the best strategies for understanding and predicting the stock market, and when it is applied as a method of predictable forecast, it is known as the "barometer." This finance classic offers tips and trends that William Hamilton observed over the years in the market, offering a view of market behavior that remains perpetually current. Hamilton, a contemporary of Charles H. Dow, presents a clear and in-depth discussion of the Dow Theory and its explanation of averages and affinity for predictable cycles of panic and prosperity. Provides an analysis of the stock market and its history since 1897. * This book is a springboard upon which current Dow Theory has thrived. * New foreword by Charles Carlson. The late William P. Hamilton originally published The Stock Market Barometer in 1922. Hamilton spent a career in financial journalism and became an editor of The Wall Street Journal.
