Rational Number Theory in the 20th Century - From PNT to FLT (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Wladyslaw Narkiewicz Rational Number Theory in the 20th Century - From PNT to FLT (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Wladyslaw Narkiewicz
R3,942 Discovery Miles 39 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The last one hundred years have seen many important achievements in the classical part of number theory. After the proof of the Prime Number Theorem in 1896, a quick development of analytical tools led to the invention of various new methods, like Brun's sieve method and the circle method of Hardy, Littlewood and Ramanujan; developments in topics such as prime and additive number theory, and the solution of Fermat's problem. Rational Number Theory in the 20th Century: From PNT to FLT offers a short survey of 20th century developments in classical number theory, documenting between the proof of the Prime Number Theorem and the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. The focus lays upon the part of number theory that deals with properties of integers and rational numbers. Chapters are divided into five time periods, which are then further divided into subject areas. With the introduction of each new topic, developments are followed through to the present day. This book will appeal to graduate researchers and student in number theory, however the presentation of main results without technicalities will make this accessible to anyone with an interest in the area.

The Development of Prime Number Theory - From Euclid to Hardy and Littlewood (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Wladyslaw Narkiewicz The Development of Prime Number Theory - From Euclid to Hardy and Littlewood (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Wladyslaw Narkiewicz
R4,129 Discovery Miles 41 290 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book presents the development of Prime Number Theory from its beginnings until the end of the first decade of the XXth century. Special emphasis is given to the work of Cebysev, Dirichlet, Riemann, Vallée-Poussin, Hadamard and Landau. The book presents the principal results with proofs and also gives, mostly in short comments, an overview of the development in the last 80 years. It is, however, not a historical book since it does not give biographical details of the people who have played a role in the development of Prime Number Theory. The book contains a large list of references with more than 1800 items. It can be read by any person with a knowledge of fundamental notions of number theory and complex analysis.

The book is aimed at people working in number theory or at least interested in this part of mathematics. It presents the development of the theory of algebraic numbers up to the year 1950 and contains a rather complete bibliography of that period. The reader will get information about results obtained before 1950. It is hoped that this may be helpful in preventing rediscoveries of old results, and might also inspire the reader to look at the work done earlier, which may hide some ideas which could be applied in contemporary research.

Elementary and Analytic Theory of Algebraic Numbers (Hardcover, 3rd ed. 2004): Wladyslaw Narkiewicz Elementary and Analytic Theory of Algebraic Numbers (Hardcover, 3rd ed. 2004)
Wladyslaw Narkiewicz
R4,138 Discovery Miles 41 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book details the classical part of the theory of algebraic number theory, excluding class-field theory and its consequences. Coverage includes: ideal theory in rings of algebraic integers, p-adic fields and their finite extensions, ideles and adeles, zeta-functions, distribution of prime ideals, Abelian fields, the class-number of quadratic fields, and factorization problems. The book also features exercises and a list of open problems.

Polynomial Mappings (Paperback, 1995 ed.): Wladyslaw Narkiewicz Polynomial Mappings (Paperback, 1995 ed.)
Wladyslaw Narkiewicz
R1,213 Discovery Miles 12 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book deals with certain algebraic and arithmetical questions concerning polynomial mappings in one or several variables. Algebraic properties of the ring Int(R) of polynomials mapping a given ring R into itself are presented in the first part, starting with classical results of Polya, Ostrowski and Skolem. The second part deals with fully invariant sets of polynomial mappings F in one or several variables, i.e. sets X satisfying F(X)=X . This includes in particular a study of cyclic points of such mappings in the case of rings of algebrai integers. The text contains several exercises and a list of open problems.

1. People were already interested in prime numbers in ancient times, and the first result concerning the distribution of primes appears in Euclid's Elemen ta, where we find a proof of their infinitude, now regarded as canonical. One feels that Euclid's argument has its place in The Book, often quoted by the late Paul ErdOs, where the ultimate forms of mathematical arguments are preserved. Proofs of most other results on prime number distribution seem to be still far away from their optimal form and the aim of this book is to present the development of methods with which such problems were attacked in the course of time. This is not a historical book since we refrain from giving biographical details of the people who have played a role in this development and we do not discuss the questions concerning why each particular person became in terested in primes, because, usually, exact answers to them are impossible to obtain. Our idea is to present the development of the theory of the distribu tion of prime numbers in the period starting in antiquity and concluding at the end of the first decade of the 20th century. We shall also present some later developments, mostly in short comments, although the reader will find certain exceptions to that rule. The period of the last 80 years was full of new ideas (we mention only the applications of trigonometrical sums or the advent of various sieve methods) and certainly demands a separate book."
