Open publication Opening the 9-volume-series Handbooks of
Pragmatics, this handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the
foundations of pragmatics. It covers the central theories and
approaches as well as key concepts and topics characteristic of
mainstream pragmatics, i.e. the traditional and most widespread
approach to the ways and means of using language in authentic
social contexts. The in-depth articles provide reliable
orientational overviews useful to researchers, students, and
teachers. They are both state of the art reviews of their topics
and critical evaluations in the light of subsequent developments.
Topics are thus considered within their scholarly context and also
critically evaluated from current perspectives. The five major
sections of the handbook are dedicated to the Conceptual and
Theoretical Foundations (with a historiographic overview of the
establishment and subsequent development of pragmatics), Key Topics
(investigating indexicality, reference and other concepts that were
the first to make their way from grammar into pragmatics and
mainstream notions like speech acts, types of inference), the Place
of Pragmatics in the Description of Discourse (delimiting
pragmatics from grammar, semantics, prosody, literary criticism),
and Methods and Tools.
Methods in Pragmatics provides a systematic overview of the
different types of data, the different methods of data collection
and data analysis used in pragmatic research. It offers
authoritative and comprehensive surveys of the entire breadth of
methods and methodologies. Part 1 covers introspectional,
philosophical and cognitive pragmatics. Part 2 is devoted to
experimental pragmatics, including discourse completion and
dialogue construction tasks, role-plays and other production and
comprehension tasks. Part 3 reviews observational pragmatics
including ethnographic and discourse analytic methods, and part 4,
finally, is devoted to corpus pragmatics including accounts of
corpus compilation, annotation and data retrieval specific to
pragmatic research. Each contribution provides a state-of-the-art
account of the precise workings of one particular method, its
applications in the relevant research literature as well as a
critical assessment of its strengths and weaknesses and the type of
pragmatic research questions for which it is most suitable.
This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the pragmatics
of social media, i.e. of digitally mediated and Internet-based
platforms which are interactively used to share and edit self- and
other-generated textual and audio-visual messages. Its five parts
offer state-of-the-art reviews and critical evaluations in the
light of on-going developments: Part I The Nature of Social Media
sets up the conceptual groundwork as it explores key concept such
as social media, participation, privacy/publicness. Part II Social
Media Platforms focuses on the pragmatics of single platforms such
as YouTube, Facebook. Part III Social Media and Discourse covers
the micro-and macro-level organization of social media discourse,
while Part IV Social Media and Identity reveals the multifarious
ways in which users collectively (re-)construct aspects of their
identities. Part V Social Media and Functions/Speech Acts surveys
pragmatic studies on speech act functions such as disagreeing,
complimenting, requesting. Each contribution provides a
state-of-the-art review together with a critical evaluation of the
existing research.
In examining the phenomenon of quoting from multiple angles, The
Pragmatics of Quoting Now and Then offers a fresh view on the
forms, functions and usage of quoting as a meta-communicative act
in various forms of old (printed) and new (electronically mediated)
communication, setting it apart from (seemingly) related acts like
repeating or referring. Recent interest in the formal (copy-paste
quoting) and ethical (quoting as plagiarizing) aspects of quoting
has been gaining considerable momentum in linguistics (and other
disciplines), predominantly fuelled by enormous technological
progress and the impact on both the procedure of quoting itself and
its appraisal in public discourse. Embracing a broad,
interdisciplinary perspective, the authors pay special tribute to
the inherent complementarity of both synchronic and diachronic
perspectives. With contributions pinpointing the formal and
functional evolution of quoting and tracing trends in linguistic
variation, this volume brings together interpersonal pragmatics,
sociolinguistics, historical, cognitive and text linguistics as
well as cultural studies. In this way, the present title provides a
more comprehensive and integral understanding of the nature of
quoting.
Diese Festschrift wurde dem Sprachwissenschaftler Winfried Boeder
(Universitat Oldernburg) zu seinem 65. Geburtstag von seinen
Freunden, Kollegen und Schulern zugeeignet. Dem vielseitigen, recht
unterschiedliche Aspekte naturlicher Sprachen berucksichtigenden
This festschrift is cordially and respectfully
dedicated to the linguist Winfried Boeder (University of Oldenburg,
Germany) to honour him as a friend, colleague and teacher on the
occasion of his 65th birthday. Winfried Boeder is not only one of
the most distinguished scholars of Caucasian languages b ut he is
also widely recognised for the great and continuing contribution he
has made to the field of general and comparative linguistics.
Accordingly, the present volume includes papers on three separate
but related areas: philology (both from a linguistic and cultural
point of view), language typology and language structure (including
comparative studies). The 25 contribution are thus held together by
the links they have with various aspects of winfried Boeder's work.
Georgian, a language for which he has a particular affection, is
the topic of a large number of papers, both from a synchronic and
diachronic point of view.
