International terrorism remains a significant threat to the peace of the world. Weapons using various materials and delivery systems have been directed against cities and infrastructure, and other materials are postulated to be usable within the near future. Some of these materials are unusual or exotic, while some are modifications of materials used daily for other purposes: biological, chemical, radiological, nuclear and explosive. These materials pose a safety challenge for first responders, slowing the response and potentially killing scarce trained personnel. This book provides information about how leading agencies across the NATO membership are preparing to confront and respond to terrorists deploying Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), Weapons of Mass Killing (WMK) and Weapons of Mass Disruption (WMDi). Based on contributions by experts from NATO member states, Israel and the Russian Federation, this book offers information on fourth generation warfare as a new challenge to first responders. It also provides a variety of insights into methods for preparing for and responding to WMD-, WMK-, and WMDi-events, using new technologies and strategies. Furthermore, the book offers solution for restoring the community to functioning after such a major terror attack. Topics include preparing, planning, operations, equipment, training and unique applications of existing technologies for countering terrorist attacks against cities and their infrastructure.
PTSD is more usually considered as an adult disorder: this volume concentrates on children and adolescents. The introductory chapters are followed by a chapter on assessment and several chapters on treatment. The issues of clinical management in some of the important ecological contexts such as family and school, and aetiological contexts such as refugee status and child abuse, are discussed in further detail. Then a variety of treatment approaches are clearly described. The book is aimed at teachers, practitioners and researchers in child psychiatry, clinical child psychology, educational psychology, social work, paediatrics, and occupational therapy.
Advanced Medical Life Support, Second Edition is the leading course for prehospital practitioners in the advanced medical assessment and treatment of commonly encountered medical conditions. Taught throughout the world since 1999, Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) was the first emergency medical services education program that fully addressed how best to manage patients in medical crises. AMLS is the only textbook approved for use by NAEMT's Advanced Medical Life Support course, which emphasizes the AMLS Assessment Pathway, the most important guide for assessing patients with medical conditions. The United Kingdom edition of AMLS is enhanced by: Key Features Critical thinking scenarios give students a genuine context for the application of the knowledge presented in the chapter, including a scenario solution. Students are able to assess, review, and discern the possible diagnosis of the patient. Chapter review questions, chapter summaries, and Putting It All Together sections reinforce key concepts and tie information together, helping students retain what they have learned. Endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians and the United Kingdom College of Paramedics, the course emphasises the use of the AMLS Assessment Pathway, a systematic assessment tool that enables healthcare practitioners to diagnose medical patients with urgent accuracy. Current Medical Content Coverage of basic and advanced treatment modalities incorporate the latest research developments that are suitable for both beginning and experienced prehospital care providers, emergency and critical care nurses, and emergency doctors. An Updated AMLS Assessment Pathway The revised AMLS Assessment Pathway provides a systematic approach to the assessment of a medical patient and even more direction for students at all levels of practice.

Urology is a speciality that notoriously receives little attention in medical school, yet it makes up a sizeable portion of the workload in emergency departments and also in primary care. Urological emergencies can often be managed simply but require the appropriate knowledge and skills. Emergency urology is often covered very superficially alongside general surgery or in excessive detail within voluminous urology textbooks. This book is different: it will consist of concise, well-structured chapters, with an accessible and easily digestible style. The content will be clinically-based and will include a number of clinical photographs and radiological investigations. This book will appeal to all doctors, including those rotating through surgical and emergency medicine specialities, and those clinicians approaching professional examinations worldwide. Medial students on urology or emergency medicine placements, who are studying for their exams will also find it invaluable. In addition, primary care doctors, speciality nurses in urology and nurses in emergency department may also appreciate the clinically relevant content of the book. The authors are all dedicated to education and teaching, and have published extensively. In addition, they run a successful emergency urology course in Cambridge, popular with clinicians and senior students alike.
Treating PTSD presents a comprehensive, compassion-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach that provides therapists with the evidence-based information they need to understand trauma's effects on the mind and body as well as the phases of healing. Chapters offer discussion, practical tools, and interventions that therapists can use with clients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to reduce feelings of distress and increase their sense of safety. Readers are introduced to the metaphor of "the valley of the shadow of death" to explain the experience of PTSD; they're also shown how to identify the work they'll need to do as therapists to accompany clients on their healing journey. Two new compassion-focused CBT interventions for trauma processing are also introduced.
Posttraumatic Growth reworks and overhauls the seminal 2006 Handbook of Posttraumatic Growth. It provides a wide range of answers to questions concerning knowledge of posttraumatic growth (PTG) theory, its synthesis and contrast with other theories and models, and its applications in diverse settings. The book starts with an overview of the history, components, and outcomes of PTG. Next, chapters review quantitative, qualitative, and cross-cultural research on PTG, including in relation to cognitive function, identity formation, cross-national and gender differences, and similarities and differences between adults and children. The final section shows readers how to facilitate optimal outcomes with PTG at the level of the individual, the group, the community, and society.
Based on original interviews of 22 Muslim-American women of South Asian descent on the topics of honor and honor killings, this book examines honor and culture, and their intersections with power, tradition, gender, family, and religion. Additionally, it incorporates an autoethnographic approach describing the author's journey to Pakistan to create a personal narrative throughout. This volume offers a unique perspective that allows for informed exploration and description of Muslim-American women's attitudes and beliefs surrounding the practice of killing women and girls in order to regain family honor.

With mounting evidence regarding the role of poor nutrition in the development of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, it is no secret that appropriate nutrition is crucial to optimal health. Achieving the correct balance of elements provides the body with the ability to adapt to a shifting and often hazardous environment. Never is this capability more important than when a wound is sustained and the body's first line of defense, the skin, is breached. Nutrition and Wound Healing describes the importance of several nutrients, both macronutrients and micronutrients, and their relation to the body's requirements when healing itself. Beginning with an overview to introduce the novice to the fundamentals of nutrition and wound healing, the text analyzes the role of each nutrient, chapter by chapter. The authors discuss carbohydrates, fats, proteins, trace elements, and fat- and water-soluble vitamins. Balanced attention is paid to conditions of deficiency as well as toxic excess as applicable to each nutrient. Specific challenges to healing are considered with individual chapters on burns, cancer, and age extremes. The book also includes a chapter on hormones and the pharmacologic manipulation of wound healing. Specific recommendations for the appropriate administration of each nutrient and variations for individual circumstances are discussed throughout the book. In addition, future directions of research are provided in each chapter to guide young investigators in the field. While many wounds heal well on their own, there are many circumstances when intervention is necessary. Nutrition and Wound Healing provides the clinician, researcher, and even the interested novicewith the information he or she needs to know to help the body heal itself.

In modern medicine the most functional methodologies are taking an increasing importance in spreading informations, rendering it credible while at the same time using reliable data to focus interaction between basic science and clinical medicine. Critical care medicine embraces these needs and more than any other discipline thrives and develops thanks to interdisciplinary contact. APICE 2004 has been organised to provide precise answers to these issues. In particular, considerable emphasis has been given to the reviews regarding the most important aspects - or the most significant clinical developments - in the sectors involving variety of functions: neurological, respiratory and cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, metabolism and perfusion; trauma infections, sepsis and organ failure; perioperative medicine and life support techniques; information technology dedicated to clinical medicine, but also as a means of information and education. The contributing authors are all part of leading research groups at the international level in the various sectors presented in the volume.
Accident and emergency departments are the doorway to the hospital for acutely ill and injured patients. Whereas casualty departments have existed for over 150 years, they were often poorly staffed and managed. This book describes the fight to create a new medical specialty of accident and emergency medicine against much opposition from established specialties. The specialty was first recognised in 1972. The book also charts the major developments that occurred in the first 30 years of the specialty.
This new addition to the popular 100 cases series explores common clinical scenarios that will be encountered by the medical student and junior doctor during practical training in the emergency department, in the community and in intensive and critical care settings, and which are likely to feature in qualifying examinations. The book covers a broad range of presentations, organized by sub-specialty area for ease of reference. Comprehensive answers highlight key take home points from each case and provide practical advice on how to deal with the challenges that occur when practising emergency and critical care medicine at all levels.

Continuous update in critical care medicine is a real challenge due to the growing dimensions of its contents; these elements are the result of new research acquisitions, and of those clinical situations where the physician is able to intervene at a given moment, with the use of effective prevention techniques. They are also the result of new technologies able to define complex sub-clinical diagnostic aspects; lastly, they are the result of effective therapeutic techniques available, and of treatment strategies able to influence radically and positively the patient's clinical course. Critical care medicine is playing a key role in the most advanced environments, as it represents a cross-sectional field of action, involving several specialties, such as anesthesiology, general medicine, surgery, pediatrics.
Move past trauma, balance your emotions, and reconnect with your body's innate wisdom in The Body Awareness Workbook for Trauma. There is a piercing epidemic of trauma in the world today. Every few days there are reports of another tragedy, of more lives lost to gun violence, loved ones and family homes lost to floods, hurricanes, or fires. Women have come to speak openly about the trauma of sexual assault, and we are finally talking openly about the trauma inflicted on people of colour, on transgender people, and immigrants. But now that this trauma is out in the open, how do we heal? For years, we've understood the connection between trauma and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. But somatic psychology has recently shown that our bodies hold on to trauma, and trauma can manifest in physical symptoms, such as pain, hormone imbalance, sexual dysfunction, and addiction. In addition, we now know that developmental trauma-trauma that emerges when basic childhood needs are not met-can result in profound emotional stress and lead to serious diseases. Building on this knowledge, this cutting-edge guide offers simple skills for connecting and calming your body, balancing your emotions, and rewiring old patterns of reactivity for better self-regulation. The mind-body approach in this book is designed to guide you away from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma and toward posttraumatic growth. Using these exercises, you'll learn how to reconnect and relate to your body-and yourself as a whole-in a new and healthy way. If you're ready to move past your trauma and rediscover your body's innate capacity for healing, growth, vitality, and joy, this unique guide will help light the way.

Military psychology has become one of the world's fastest-growing disciplines with ever-emerging new applications of research and development. The Routledge International Handbook of Military Psychology and Mental Health is a compendium of chapters by internationally renowned scholars in the field, bringing forth the state of the art in the theory, practice and future prospects of military psychology. This uniquely interdisciplinary volume deliberates upon the current issues and applications of military psychology not only within the military organization and the discipline of psychology, but also in the larger context of its role of building a better world. Split into three parts dedicated to specific themes, the first part of the book, "Military Psychology: The Roots and the Journey," provides an overview of the evolution of the discipline over the years, delving into concepts as varied as culture and cognition in the military, a perspective on the role of military psychology in future warfare and ethical issues. The second part, "Soldiering: Deployment and Beyond," considers the complexities involved in soldiering in view of the changing nature of warfare, generating a focal discourse on various aspects of military leadership, soldier resilience and post-traumatic growth in the face of extreme situations, bravery and character strengths and transitioning to civilian life. In the final section, "Making a Choice: Mental Health Issues and Prospects in the Military," the contributors focus on the challenges and practices involved in maintaining the mental health of the soldier, covering issues ranging from stress, mental health and well-being, through to suicide risk and its prevention, intervention and management strategies, moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. Incorporating enlightening contributions of eminent scholars from around the world, the volume is a comprehensive repository of current perspectives and future directions in the domain of military psychology. It will prove a valuable resource for mental health practitioners, military leaders, policy-makers and academics and students across a range of disciplines.
Who were the shell shocked soldiers of the First World War? How did the warfare they experienced, the military discipline they often endured, the medical treatment they encountered shape their post-war lives? Peter Leese's Shell Shock, now published for the first time in paperback, narrates their stories to demonstrate the wider implications of shell shock. In its origins, shell shock in the Great War tells us about the new industrial technologies and mentalities of modernity. In its after-life, shell shock helps us understand the histories of violence, trauma and memory through the twentieth and into the twenty-first century.
Researchers from many disciplines, with both basic and clinical perspectives, came together in this volume to review and debate issues pertaining to the investigation and control of tissue oxygenation in acute medicine, as well as treatments to improve tissue oxygenation when abnormal. In this latter context, special emphasis is placed on understanding the effect of blood substitutes on the circulation and on the potential roles of this family of compounds in clinical medicine.
Critically ill and critically injured patients require specialized nutrition support to avoid the complications of progressive malnutrition. There is a paucity of information providing practical solutions to these difficult clinical problems. From Nutrition Support to Pharmacologic Nutrition in the ICU focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of the management of this high-risk patient population. Each chapter presents a state-of-the-art discussion of nutritional and metabolic issues relevant to this resource-intensive patient population and contains current references, liberal tables and figures, and the personal insights of recognized international leaders in this field. |
