Displaced - Literature of Indigeneity, Migration, and Trauma (Hardcover): Kate Rose Displaced - Literature of Indigeneity, Migration, and Trauma (Hardcover)
Kate Rose
R4,377 Discovery Miles 43 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through specific and rigorous analysis of contemporary literary texts, this book shows how writers from inside affected communities portray indigeneity, displacement, and trauma. In a world of increasing global inequality, this study aims to demonstrate how literature, and the study of it, can effect positive social change, notably in the face of global environmental, economic, and social injustice. This collection brings together a diverse and compelling array of voices from academics leading their fields around the world, to pioneer a new approach to literary analysis anchored in engagement with our changing world.

Treating Trauma Survivors With PTSD (Paperback): Rachel Yehuda Treating Trauma Survivors With PTSD (Paperback)
Rachel Yehuda
R1,727 Discovery Miles 17 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years, considerable research, as well as clinical guidelines based on study findings, has been published on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A gap remains, however, between the controlled environments and protocols used in intervention research and the more complex and often imperfect settings and situations that clinicians must navigate in daily practice. Moreover, clinicians routinely see patients whose comorbid substance abuse, self-destructive behavior, or medical illness would likely exclude them from research studies. In short, although the extensive literature is certainly helpful in articulating the various treatment modalities available to clinicians, the strength of the evidence for the efficacy of the treatments, and the recommendations and personal preferences of experts, the literature does not address the real-life dilemmas that clinicians face in attempting to treat trauma survivors.

What is needed is a way to bridge the gap between research and practice -- to "translate" study findings into everyday clinical realities. Treating Trauma Survivors With PTSD answers that need. Its authors, experienced researchers and clinicians who are at the forefront of conceptual discourse on trauma and PTSD, are uniquely qualified to offer guidance on these issues. Among the specific topics covered are the following: - Diagnosis and assessment of and treatment planning for trauma survivors with PTSD, including clinical presentations related to trauma exposure and PTSD and the implications of comorbid symptoms and disorders- Treatment matching in clinical practice -- how treatment outcome findings can be used to develop profiles for predicting which patients are most likely to respond to which treatments- Medications useful in the treatment of PTSD and the strength of the empirical evidence for their efficacy- Trauma in children and the efficacy of various treatments, including a discussion of how treatment for children differs from that for adults- Assessment and treatment of multiply traumatized patients -- those with both recent trauma and a history of childhood trauma or abuse- Treatment of trauma survivors in the acute aftermath of traumatic events, including a review of some of the exciting developments in the field regarding risk factors (e.g., normal vs. pathological coping responses) that influence which individuals are most likely to develop PTSD after such events.

These topics have never been more relevant than now, in the wake of the attacks that shook our country on September 11, 2001. It is the authors' hope that by reading this book, mental health practitioners will gain more confidence in applying the specialized techniques described in empirical studies to their own practices and clinical realities.

Designed to serve simultaneously as a learning and reference tool, each chapter begins with a real case that was encountered in an ED setting. The case presentation is followed by a short discussion of the case, as if at a morbidity and mortality conference, by a panel of experienced attending physicians explaining how they would approach the ethical dilemmas associated with the case, and a review of the existing literature.

Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy - An emotion-focused approach (Paperback): Ladislav Timulak Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy - An emotion-focused approach (Paperback)
Ladislav Timulak
R941 Discovery Miles 9 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Emotion-focused therapy is a research-informed psychological therapy that to date has mainly been studied in the context of depression, trauma and couple distress. The evidence suggests that this therapy has a lasting and transformative effect. Ladislav Timulak presents EFT as a particular therapeutic approach that addresses psychological human suffering, offering a view that puts more emphasis on attending to the distress, rather than avoiding or suppressing it. Focusing on the latest developments in EFT, Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy presents a theory of human suffering and a model of therapy that addresses that suffering. The model of suffering assumes that the experienced emotional pain is a response to an injury that prevents or violates the fulfilment of the basic human needs of being loved, safe, and acknowledged. This book focuses on a particular way of transforming emotional pain in psychotherapy through: helping the client to tolerate the pain; assisting the client to identify the core of the difficult emotional experiences; identifying the needs connected to the core pain which are unmet or being violated, and responding (with compassion and protective anger) to the underlying needs of the client that transforms the original pain. Transforming Emotional Pain in Psychotherapy provides an account of how emotional pain can be conceptualised and how it can be addressed in therapy. It provides practical tips for therapists working with emotional pain and shows how it can then be made more bearable and transformed allowing the client to be more sensitive to the pain of others, and to seek support when needed. This book will be essential reading for clinical and counselling psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors in practice and training, as well as for fully qualified professionals undergoing further training in EFT.

Appendicitis - Prevalence, Risk Factors and Clinical Management (Paperback): Rose Ballard Appendicitis - Prevalence, Risk Factors and Clinical Management (Paperback)
Rose Ballard
R2,764 Discovery Miles 27 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical abdominal emergencies worldwide, with a lifetime risk of 8.6% for males and 6.7% for females. This compilation discusses how while non-operative treatment of appendicitis has been proposed as an alternative to surgery, appendicectomy remains the mainstay of treatment in most cases and techniques have shifted from open to laparoscopic methods. The current knowledge in pathogenesis, diagnosis, and clinical management of acute appendicitis is also discussed. Next, the authors present an updated review chapter of appendicitis regarding its prevalence and risk factors, particularly how the diagnosis of appendicitis is based on a history of diffuse abdominal pain, which usually starts in the central region of the abdomen and migrates to the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. The residual remnant or "stump" of the appendix after an initial appendectomy may become inflamed causing what is commonly referred to as stump appendicitis. Treatment with antibiotics may be attempted as an alternative to surgery; however, the vast majority of cases require definitive surgical excision of the remnant appendix. The authors propose that keeping this disease in the differential is important in reducing complications associated with delayed diagnosis.

Jerrold Lerman, Charles J. Cote, David J. Steward
R3,989 Discovery Miles 39 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Authored by three world experts, this is a clinically focused book on pediatric anesthesia. "The Manual", as it is known, has long dominated the market for a succinct and practical resource on administering anesthesia to children and is used by residents, general anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and pediatric anesthesiologists. This new edition retains the basic structure of the book and is updated throughout. Text-heavy in the current edition, the Seventh Edition features the addition of figures to chapters where they are especially helpful (eg, the chapter on cardiovascular surgery and cardiac procedures) and makes greater use of headings to break up the text and guide reading. From reviews of the Sixth Edition:" This is an extremely well written book that I would recommend highly to anyone involved in anaesthetizing children. It is comprehensive enough to provide an excellent reference for trainees and general anaesthetists who occasionally deal with paediatric cases, while at the same time giving valuable supplemental information for paediatric anaesthetists encountering an unusual procedure or condition. In short, this is a book that would make a welcome addition to any anaesthetist's mobile library." --Anaesthesia
