In this book, Peaston challenges the common assumption that the
Prayer Book is the exclusive possession of the Church of England
and the Anglican Communion, and researches its adoption in the Free
Churches of England. Peaston acknowledges the Catholic revisions of
the Prayer Book since its establishment during the reign of
Elizabeth I, but concentrates predominantly on the Protestant
revisions which ultimately heralded the way for much liturgical
revision in the Free Churches. He also focuses upon the development
of liturgical worship in those communions which were generally
regarded as belonging to the strict Protestant tradition. Peaston
explores how the Prayer Book found a new home amongst Methodists,
Moravians, Congregationalists, and Swedenborgians, as well as
several others. He explores its traditional importance to them, and
its modern relevance. Free Churchmen may have left the
Establishment with or without regret, but the cadences of Cranmer
and ancient Anglican piety have lingered in unforgotten memory
amongst Nonconformists. In his Foreword the late Professor E.C.
Ratcliff comments that: 'It is no exaggeration to say that Peaston
has completed the extra-Anglican history of the Prayer Book. In so
doing, he has made a notable contribution to the history of English
religion.'

The Lord's Prayer includes everything you need to ask when you talk
to God . . . it is a model prayer that teaches us how to pray."

Shakespeare's Common Prayers revolves around Shakespeare's great
overlooked source: the Book of Common Prayer, first published in
1549, whose appearance established Protestantism as the compulsory
belief of the day. Written in a simple vernacular and incorporating
familiar Catholic rituals, the book laid out the proper performance
of church rites and services. And yet it was also highly disputed
and constantly in flux; as Daniel Swift shows, the prayer book's
history is one of passionately contested revision and of manic
sensitivity to a verb or a turn of phrase. In the book's
ambiguities and fierce contestations, Swift argues, William
Shakespeare found the ready elements of drama: dispute over words
and their practical consequences, hope for sanctification tempered
by fear of simple meaninglessness, and the demand for improvised
performance as a compensation for the failure of language to do
what it appears to promise. Swift offers a study of Shakespeare at
work: of his imagination at play upon a set of literary materials
from which he both borrowed and learned, of his manipulation of the
explosive chemistry of word and action that comprised early modern
liturgy. Swift argues that the Book of Common Prayer mediates
between the secular and the devotional, producing a tension that
helps make Shakespeare's plays so powerful and exceptional. Tracing
the prayer book's lines and motions through As You Like It, Hamlet,
Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, Othello, and particularly
Macbeth, Swift redirects scholarly attention to the religious heart
of Shakespeare's work and time.
You are the fountain of life, light, and all grace and truth "Use
this book as a daily guide in your walk with God and it will enrich
you in a multitude of ways." --Michael A G Haykin The hearts of the
first Christians beat with praise for Christ. The strength of their
devotion is remarkable, considering the times of uncertainty and
persecution in which they lived. Despite all of this, the early
church flourished, sustained by the God to whom they prayed.
Christians today have a lot to learn from the devotional life of
the early church. In Fount of Heaven, a collection of carefully
selected prayers from the first six centuries of the church, we can
pray with our spiritual forefathers. Prayers from luminaries such
as Clement of Rome, Irenaeus, and Augustine are arranged by theme
to reveal the right prayer for the moment. The prayers have been
slightly updated to read more easily, but they retain their joy and
mystery. As we turn to the prayers of the first Christians, we can
return to the foundations of our own faith.

John O'Donohue, Irish teacher and poet, has been widely praised for
his gift of drawing on Celtic spiritual traditions to create words
of inspiration and wisdom for today. In "To Bless the Space Between
Us, " his compelling blend of elegant, poetic language and
spiritual insight offers readers comfort and encouragement on their
journeys through life. O'Donohue looks at life's
thresholds--getting married, having children, starting a new
job--and offers invaluable guidelines for making the transition
from a known, familiar world into a new, unmapped territory. Most
profoundly, however, O'Donohue explains "blessing" as a way of
life, as a lens through which the whole world is transformed.
O'Donohue awakens readers to timeless truths and shows the power
they have to answer contemporary dilemmas and ease us through
periods of change.

So often, it seems, liturgical themes and Christological emphases
get set aside when special topics such as "Earth Sunday" arise in
congregational worship. This book will suggest that the
Christologically constructed liturgical year provides a meaningful
framework for ecologically oriented worship. This book will
maintain the Christocentric emphasis of these liturgical seasons,
but will provide an ecological perspective on these seasons, on
Christian worship, and indeed on Christ.

the people of God. Ideal for use at weekday celebrations, including
