Green Liberalism - The Free And The Green Society (Paperback): Marcel Wissenburg Green Liberalism - The Free And The Green Society (Paperback)
Marcel Wissenburg
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is an agenda-setting exploration of the relationship between green politics and liberal ideology. Ecological problems provide unique challenges for liberal democracies. This challenge is examined by the author who aims to fill the gap between short-term ecological modernization and the politically infeasible longer term utopian approaches.

Killing Game - International Law and the African Elephant (Hardcover, New): David J. Harland Killing Game - International Law and the African Elephant (Hardcover, New)
David J. Harland
R2,777 Discovery Miles 27 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1989 the international community banned the international trade in elephant ivory; three years later the ban was renewed. Dr. Harland believes the ivory ban is the most controversial--and most misunderstood--piece of international wildlife law ever made. His book, Killing Game, seeks to unravel some of the misunderstandings, and it attempts to determine if international law can be an effective tool for the conservation of wildlife and if international law has served the African elephant well. Part I is an extended investigation of how and why international law is used so badly by the conservation community, and how it could be used better. Here Dr. Harland focuses on the problem of which laws are complied with and which are not; in the process he shows the importance of factors of compliance in determining the degree to which laws will be followed. In Part II he examines the status of the African elephant in international law in light of these factors. This book will be of interest to those involved in formulating international law, as well as the conservation community in general.

Feminism and Ecological Communities - An Ethic of Flourishing (Hardcover, New): Christine Cuomo Feminism and Ecological Communities - An Ethic of Flourishing (Hardcover, New)
Christine Cuomo
R4,472 Discovery Miles 44 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

If some of our values have contributed to the creation of a toxic and damaged planet, and to the maintenance of systems of oppression based on gender, race and other types of differences, any attempts to foster alternative values requires attention to social and as well as ecological concerns. "Feminism and Ecological Communities" presents a bold and passionate rethinking of the ecofeminist movement. It is one of the first books to acknowledge the importance of postmodern feminist arguments against ecofeminism while persuasively supporting a strong new case for ecofeminism.
Chris J. Cuomo explores the dualisms of nature/culture and masculine/feminine that defend many contemporary ecofeminist positions and questions traditional feminist analyses of gender and caring. Cuomo addresses these key issues by drawing on recent work in feminist ethics as well as the work of diverse figures including Aristotle, John Dewey and Donna Haraway.

Landmark Essays on Rhetoric and the Environment - Volume 12 (Paperback): Craig Waddell Landmark Essays on Rhetoric and the Environment - Volume 12 (Paperback)
Craig Waddell
R1,534 Discovery Miles 15 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume presents some of the best essays yet published on rhetoric and the environment. The collection should appeal to an interdisciplinary audience, including those interested in rhetoric, especially rhetoric of science and/or the environment, environmental studies, and modern American history studies. It should be appropriate for use in graduate or upper-division undergraduate courses in any of these areas as well as by scholars working in these areas.
With the exception of the first and last chapters -- which serve to frame the rest of the collection -- the essays are arranged chronologically by the date of the events, texts, or developments they analyze. In this way, the volume can more easily complement or be complemented by such histories of the American environmental movement as those of Fox, Hays, and Shabecoff. The editor's introduction describes his exhaustive selection procedures, provides a brief summary of each of the 11 essays, and suggests directions for further research.

David Evans
R5,842 Discovery Miles 58 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Attitudes to "nature" and the countryside are fickle. The conservation movement has achieved limited success in 100 years of campaigning, yet membership has never been greater. Can conservationists now shake off their insular, disunited and negative image and attain an influence which matches the size of their movement? This volume charts the conservation movement from its beginnings in Victorian coffee houses to its current societies which boast memberships in the millions. A history of the British movement, the oldest in the world, this text offers an insight into the campaign for countryside access and protection - from battles against pesticides, pollution, genetic engineering, farming and forestry, to legislation for the protection of birds, fish stocks, and freedom to walk the mountains.

Varieties of Environmentalism - Essays North and South (Paperback): Ramachandra Guha, Joan Martinez-Alier Varieties of Environmentalism - Essays North and South (Paperback)
Ramachandra Guha, Joan Martinez-Alier
R1,372 Discovery Miles 13 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Until very recently, studies of the environmental movement have been heavily biased towards the North Atlantic worlds. There was a common assumption amongst historians and sociologists that concerns over such issues as conservation or biodiversity were the exclusive preserve of the affluent westerner: the ultimate luxury of the consumer society. Citizens of the world's poorest countries, ran the conventional wisdom, had nothing to gain from environmental concerns; they were 'too poor to be green', and were attending to the more urgent business of survival. Yet strong environmental movements have sprung up over recent decades in some of the poorest countries in Asia and Latin America, albeit with origins and forms of expression quite distinct from their western counterparts. In Varieties of Environmentalism, Guha and Matinez-Alier seek to articulate the values and orientation of the environmentalism of the poor, and to explore the conflicting priorities of South and North that were so dramatically highlighted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Essays on the 'ecology of affluence' are also included, placing ion context such uniquely western phenomena as the 'cult of wilderness' and the environmental justice movement. Using a combination of archival and field data,. The book presents analyses of environmental conflicts and ideologies in four continents: North and South America, Asia and Europe. The authors present the nature and history of environmental movements in quite a new light, one which clarifies the issues and the processes behind them. They also provide reappraisals for three seminal figures, Gandhi, Georgescu-Roegen and Mumford, whose legacy may yet contribute to a greater cross-cultural understanding within the environmental movements.

Green Backlash - Global Subversion of the Environment Movement (Paperback, New): Andrew Rowell Green Backlash - Global Subversion of the Environment Movement (Paperback, New)
Andrew Rowell
R1,864 Discovery Miles 18 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This text presents a controversial expose of the rise of the anti-environmental movement in the USA and its rapid spread worldwide. Rowell reveals how extreme violence, threats and international scapegoating and polarization seek to intimidate activists into inactivity and silence over oil company operations in Nigeria, the UK anti-roads movement, Canadian and Australian forestry and European marine resource disputes, Brent Spar and other recent controversies. The tide is turning against environmentalism as the political Right, industry and governments fight back. The backlash is set to get worse as resource wars intensify. But by offering a greater understanding of the challenges and threats facing global environmentalism, this book presents the environmental movement with a chance to reevaluate and change to beat the backlash before it is too late.

Democracy and Green Political Thought - Sustainability, Rights and Citizenship (Hardcover, Reissue): Brian Doherty, Marius De... Democracy and Green Political Thought - Sustainability, Rights and Citizenship (Hardcover, Reissue)
Brian Doherty, Marius De Geus
R2,823 Discovery Miles 28 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The green movement has posed some tough questions for traditional justifications of democracy. Should the natural world have rights? Can we take account of the interests of future generations? But questions have also been asked of the greens. Could their idealism undermine democracy? Can greens be effective democrats?
In this book some of the leading writers on green political thought analyze these questions, examining the discourse of green movements concerning democracy, the status of democracy within green political thought and the political institutions that might be necessary to ensure democracy in a sustainable society.

The New Climate Activism - NGO Authority and Participation in Climate Change Governance (Paperback): Jen Allan The New Climate Activism - NGO Authority and Participation in Climate Change Governance (Paperback)
Jen Allan
R827 R660 Discovery Miles 6 600 Save R167 (20%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

At the 2019 UN climate change conference, activists and delegates from groups representing Indigenous, youth, women, and labour rights were among those marching through the halls chanting "Climate Justice, People Power." In The New Climate Activism, Jen Iris Allan looks at why and how these social activists came to participate in climate change governance while others, such as those working on human rights and health, remain on the outside of climate activism. Through case studies of women's rights, labour, alter-globalization, health, and human rights activism, Allan shows that some activists sought and successfully gained recognition as part of climate change governance, while others remained marginalized. While concepts key to some social activists, including gender mainstreaming, just transition, and climate justice are common terms, human rights and health remain "fringe issues" in climate change governance. The New Climate Activism explores why and how these activists brought their issues to climate change, and why some succeeded while others did not.

Real World Coalition
R802 Discovery Miles 8 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Many people today feel that something has gone wrong with British society and British politics. The quality of like seems to be declining. Crime soars. Traffic and pollution spiral. Mass unemployment is undiminished, while many people experience insecurity and stress at work. Growing poverty and inequality have left many of Britain's citizens excluded from mainstream society. Everywhere, the sense of community seems to be breaking down. In the world as a whole, poverty and conflict cause immense suffering and threaten the security of nations. Global environmental degradation - from the greenhouse effect to the destruction of rainforests - makes the very future of the planet uncertain. Yet the political system seems barely to register what is happening. It is hardly surprising that public disillusionment with politicians and Parliament has never been higher. The Politics of the Real World addresses these interlocking crises. Setting out the issues clearly, it explains how conventional economic and social policies are creating the problems we face, not solving them. Arguing that the British political system itself needs rejuvenating, it proposes a new direction for the UK in an increasingly globalised world.

Modern Environmentalism - An Introduction (Hardcover, 2 Ed): David Pepper Modern Environmentalism - An Introduction (Hardcover, 2 Ed)
David Pepper
R5,853 Discovery Miles 58 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume presents an introduction to environmentalism, the history of attitudes to nature and the environment, and how these ideas relate to modern environmental ideologies. Examining key environmental ideas within their social and historical context, it outlines radical environmentalist approaches to valuing nature, to economics, Third World development, technology, ecofeminism and social change. This account interprets and sythesises the explosion of writing on the environment since the appearance of Pepper's earlier work, "The Roots of Modern Environmentalism". Pre-modern ideas about nature and humankind's relationship to it, the developments in science, and the roots of radical environmentalism in 19th and 20th century movements are surveyed. The main influences include Malthus, Darwin and Haeckel, utopian socialism, romanticism, and organic and holistic systems thinkers. Science is placed at the heart of the society-nature debate as the major constituent of our cultural filter, explaining how postmodern ideas of subjectivity and the breakdown of scientific authority have developed.

An Ethnography of Global Environmentalism - Becoming Friends of the Earth (Hardcover, New): Caroline Gatt An Ethnography of Global Environmentalism - Becoming Friends of the Earth (Hardcover, New)
Caroline Gatt
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Based on nine years of research, this is the first book to offer an in-depth ethnographic study of a transnational environmentalist federation and of activists themselves. The book presents an account of the daily life and the ethical strivings of environmental activist members of Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), exploring how a transnational federation is constituted and maintained, and how different people strive to work together in their hope of contributing to the creation of "a better future for the globe." In the context of FoEI, a great diversity of environmentalisms from around the world are negotiated, discussed and evolve in relation to the experiences of the different cultures, ecosystems and human situations that the activists bring with them to the federation. Key to the global scope of this project is the analysis of FoEI experiments in models for intercultural and inclusive decision-making. The provisional results of FoEI's ongoing experiments in this area offer a glimpse of how different notions of the environment, and being an environmentalist, can come to work together without subsuming alterity.

The Green Movement in Iran (Paperback): Hamid Dabashi The Green Movement in Iran (Paperback)
Hamid Dabashi
R1,488 Discovery Miles 14 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Green Movement in Iran contains Hamid Dabashi's most important writings on the Iran's June 2009 election, its tumultuous aftermath, and the characteristics and aspirations of the emerging Green Movement. These analyses range from close analysis of the nature of the events to the Green Movement's historical background and future political consequences. The writings have been modified and updated for book publication. The volume presents Dabashi's account of the events since June 12, 2009 the Election Day itself and his recap of highlights of the build-up period to the mass protests. He provides insightful background for events on the ground, dealing with debates about the credibility of the election. He then discusses political continuity in Iran, as well as the characteristics of the Green Movement. Dabashi argues that the reaction of the custodians of the Islamic Republic to the charge of the election being a fraud only affirms its lost legitimacy, and casts the system as being neither "Islamic" nor a "republic." Dabashi also comments on US politics and its relations to Iran and the Green Movement, pointing out shortcomings in American media culture. The role of the Iranian opposition in the Green Movement and American political policies, the political and economic consequence of the U.S. sanctions against Iran, and the way these may be interpreted by Iranian society are all viewed from an enlightening perspective. Dabashi argues that the Iranian regime, suffering deeply from legitimacy issues, makes use of its bureaucratic, economic, and political leverage to stage a show of support and project division among the people.

Eco-Socialism - From Deep Ecology to Social Justice (Paperback, New): David Pepper Eco-Socialism - From Deep Ecology to Social Justice (Paperback, New)
David Pepper
R1,833 Discovery Miles 18 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The 1992 Earth Summit clearly demonstrated the reluctance of Western capitalism to change the ideology and practices which perpetuate environmental degradation and social injustice. The green movement itself has largely lost direction whilst Marxism no longer appears a tenable solution to global inequality.
Beginning from the shared objective of Marxism, Anarchism and deep ecology, that people must control their own lives and their relationship with their environment, Eco-Socialism presents a broad and incisive analysis of how these differing approaches can be synthesized into a new radical green politics.

Environmental Action in Eastern Europe - Responses to Crisis (Paperback): Barbara Jancar-Webster Environmental Action in Eastern Europe - Responses to Crisis (Paperback)
Barbara Jancar-Webster
R956 R777 Discovery Miles 7 770 Save R179 (19%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The environmental crisis in Eastern Europe - air and water pollution, toxic waste dumps, and unsafe nuclear facilities - has been vividly documented since the revolution of 1989. Not only did the communist states have an abysmal record of environmental destruction, but the issue of environmental protection and safety proved to be one of the msot powerful catalysts of unified opposition to these regimes. This collection of essays by both Western and East European experts examines the efforts to develop strategies for dealing with the crisis, both by governments and at the grassroots level of newly emerging Green movements. Among the countries represented here are Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Environmentalism And Political Theory - Toward An Ecocentric Approach (Paperback): Robyn Eckersley Environmentalism And Political Theory - Toward An Ecocentric Approach (Paperback)
Robyn Eckersley
R1,433 Discovery Miles 14 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This work aims to provide a detailed and comprehensive examination of the impact of environmentalism on contemporary political thought. It sets out to disentangle the various strands of Green political thought and explain their relationship to the major Western political traditions. The book represents the consolidation of a new field of political enquiry that is becoming an increasingly important component of political studies throughout the world. Eckersley's interdisciplinary study builds bridges between environmental philosophy, ecological thought and political enquiry, using a range of new insights from environmental philosophy to outline a particular Green political perspective.

Beyond Child's Play - Sustainable Product Design in the Global Doll-making Industry (Paperback): Sally Edward Beyond Child's Play - Sustainable Product Design in the Global Doll-making Industry (Paperback)
Sally Edward; Series edited by Charles Levenstein, Robert Forrant, John Wooding
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Sustainable product design is more than eco design: it goes beyond 'green' to consider the work environment, community impacts, consumer health, and economic viability, as well as environmental attributes. "Beyond Child's Play" explores the concept of sustainable product design in the context of the global doll-making industry. To initiate this research, the author reviewed eco design parameters and developed criteria for sustainable product design in the doll-making industry. Using this framework, she conducted three case studies of do I making: the American Girl doll produced in China, the Kathe Kruse doll produced in Germany and the Q'ewar Project doll produced in Peru. Themes emerged from this research that have relevance beyond the doll-making industry: the value of making a product with care; designing work for human dignity; intention and vision for sustainability; the implications of materials choices; and, transparency and sustainability. Sustainable product design calls for fundamentally new thinking. By connecting the term 'sustainable' to 'product', we raise expectations for a radically different approach to design, production, and consumption. This framework integrates the eco design principles of detoxification and dematerialization with the principle of 'humanization', to ensure that the work environment where the product is made is safe and healthy and that local communities benefit from production. This approach places increased responsibility on the industrial designer and decision-makers throughout the supply chain, including governments, corporations, and citizens. Sustainable product design can be implemented effectively only when systems are in place that support sustainable production and consumption.

Feminism and Ecology (Hardcover): Mary Mellor Feminism and Ecology (Hardcover)
Mary Mellor
R1,992 Discovery Miles 19 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The relationship between feminism and ecology has grown in importance in recent years. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the ecofeminist movement and its history, as well as an extended analysis of the main perspectives within it. Mellor examines the connections between feminism and the green movement, and outlines the contributions of the major participants, while contextualizing them within a wider range of debates. She re--examines classic feminist texts from an ecofeminist perspective, and explores the relationship between ecofeminism and other ecological movements, such as a deepa ecology, social ecology and ecosocialism. Mellor discusses the association of women with biology and a naturea , and argues that the relationship between women and the environment can help us to understand the relationship between humanity and the natural world. Against the trends towards radical economic liberalism, global capitalism and postmodernist pluralism, she argues that there is within the feminist and green movements the basis of a new radical movement which draws on the principles of both. A useful and engaging account of feminist perspectives on ecology, the book will be welcomed by students and researchers in feminism and gender studies, sociology and political theory.

Blueprint 2 - Greening the World Economy (Paperback): David Pearce Blueprint 2 - Greening the World Economy (Paperback)
David Pearce
R854 Discovery Miles 8 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Following 'Blueprint for a Green Economy' (the Pearce Report), David Pearce and his team have turned their attention to global environmental threats. If it makes sense to apply economic analysis to national environmental problems, then it makes even more sense to apply it to world-wide dangers. The authors start by describing the reasons for using economic approaches to common resources like climate, ozone and biodiversity. They then take a detailed look at the economic ways of tackling the issues involved in global warming, ozone layer depletion, environmental degradation in the Third World, population, rain forests, aid, equity, international environmental co-operation and what might amount to green foreign policies. They show not only how to take all these things into account in economic theory, but also the economic price of failing to do so. Blueprint 2 is an agenda for international and governmental economic action.
