The Elms - Breeding, Conservation, and Disease Management (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): C. P. Dunn The Elms - Breeding, Conservation, and Disease Management (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
C. P. Dunn
R2,718 Discovery Miles 27 180 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Elms occur, both naturally and cultivated, throughout much of the temperate world. Because of their high tolerance to extreme growing conditions and their widespread distribution, elms have been widely planted in cities, towns and rural areas throughout North America and northern Europe. As such, their current demise due to several pandemics of Dutch elm disease has spurred a huge body of research on breeding for disease resistance, conservation and systematics. The Elms: Breeding, Conservation and Disease Management provides the current state of knowledge in these areas and is an important reference work for pathologists, breeders, taxonomists, and arborists.

Global Ecology - Environmental Change and Social Flexibility (Hardcover): Vaclav Smil Global Ecology - Environmental Change and Social Flexibility (Hardcover)
Vaclav Smil
R4,501 Discovery Miles 45 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Global Ecology" argues that the magnitude and speed of global environmental change poses a threat for the continuation of life on this planet. Many aspects of this crisis are all too familiar to us: the destruction of tropical rainforests, the hole in the Antarctic ozone layer, desertification, and soil erosion. Yet we avoid the underlying challenge of a rapidly deteriorating ecological system and the breadth and complexity of the response that is required.
Vaclav Smil evaluates the current state of knowledge concerning atmospheric change. Recognizing the limits of scientific studies and quantitative modeling, Smil analyzes the weaknesses and uncertainties of our environmental understanding and provides a discussion of the levels of food, energy, water and materials necessary to support a decent quality of life.
This timely and crucial study explores the promises and problems of different paths towards global management. With a focus on the importance of flexible response, it provides an analysis of both social and environmental needs. It will further our understanding of biospheric change and of our abilities and weaknesses in managing the transition to a sustainable society.

Approaches to Handling Environmental Problems in the Mining and Metallurgical Regions (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Walter Leal Filho,... Approaches to Handling Environmental Problems in the Mining and Metallurgical Regions (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Walter Leal Filho, Irina Butorina
R2,684 Discovery Miles 26 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is one of the outcomes of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Approaches to handling environmental problems in the mining and metallurgical regions of NIS countries" held in Mariupol, Ukraine on 5-7 September 2002. It include papers written by some of the leading specialists in the field of mining and metallurgy, and by environment specialists who are active in this sector. Readers will notice that some common environmental problems seen in the mining and metallurgical industries are described and that their influence on the health of the population are discussed. Examples of best practice in the field are given both from EU countries and from Central and Eastern European nations, especially from the Newly Independent States (NIS). Some of the latest technologies involved in the elimination of hazardous emissions, in sewage treatment and the handling of wastes in the metallurgical and mining industries are presented and we hope that they may open the way for more West-East, East-West and East-East technology and know-how exchange. In preparing this book, thanks are due to Marina Butorina, Linda Doring and Olaf Gramkow for their competent advice in respect of translations, lay-out and handling of the texts. We also grateful to NATOs Scientific Affairs Division for the support with the workshop, whose benefits are already being felt in both Mariupol and elsewhere in Eastern Europe."

Soil Ecology (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): P. Lavelle, A Spain Soil Ecology (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
P. Lavelle, A Spain
R8,004 Discovery Miles 80 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A number of excellent textbooks on general ecology are currently available but' to date' none have been dedicated to the study of soil ecology. This is important because the soil' as the 'epidermis' of our planet' is the major component of the terrestrial biosphere. In the present age' it is difficult to understand how one could be interested in general ecology without having some knowledge of the soil and further' to study the soil without taking into account its biological components and ecological setting. It is this deficiency that the two authors' Patrick Lavelle and Alister Spain' have wished to address in writing their text. A reading of this work' entitled 'Soil Ecology'' shows it to be very complete and extremely innovative in its conceptual plan. In addition' it follows straightforwardly through a development which unfolds over four substantial chapters. Firstly' the authors consider the soil as a porous and finely divided medium of b- organomineral origin' whose physical structure and organisation foster the development of a multitude of specifically adapted organisms (microbial communities' roots of higher plants' macro-invertebrates).

Climate-Challenged Society (Hardcover, New): John S. Dryzek, Richard B. Norgaard, David Schlosberg Climate-Challenged Society (Hardcover, New)
John S. Dryzek, Richard B. Norgaard, David Schlosberg
R2,683 Discovery Miles 26 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an original, accessible, and thought-provoking introduction to the severe and broad-ranging challenges that climate change presents and how societies can respond. It synthesizes and deploys cutting-edge scholarship on the range of social, economic, political, and philosophical issues surrounding climate change. The treatment is introductory, but the book is written "with attitude", for nobody has yet charted in coherent, integrative, and effective fashion a way to move societies beyond their current paralysis as they face the challenges of climate change. The coverage begins with an examination of science, public opinion, and policy making, with special attention to organized climate change denial. The book then moves to economic analysis and its limits; different kinds of policies; climate justice; governance at all levels from the local to the global; and the challenge of an emerging "Anthropocene" in which the mostly unintended consequences of human action drive the earth system into a more chaotic and unstable era. The conclusion considers the prospects for fundamental transition in ideas, movements, economics, and governance.

Aldo Alvarez-Risco, Marc A. Rosen, Shyla Del-Aguila-Arcentales
R2,262 Discovery Miles 22 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents a transdisciplinary approach to implementing a circular economy in international business. Written by global experts, this book provides a detailed and professional focus on issues that must be improved in order to successfully implement a circular economy in a variety of industries. The book begins with a discussion of the theoretical aspects of circular economy and the challenges of going from theory to practice. The following chapters present case studies on the circular economy in different sectors of international business such as food systems, mineral processing, water management, energy process, waste management, the cement industry, and 3D printing. Issues such as the role of SMEs in the circular economy, and the progress towards circular economy 3.0, and strategies for teaching the circular economy are also discussed. The volume ends with a critique of the concept of circular economy and suggestions for future research avenues. Written with multiple stakeholders in mind, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students of economics, sustainability, international business, and management as well as industry professionals and governments working towards establishing a circular economy in their fields and jurisdictions.

Bushido Capitalism - The code to redefine business for a sustainable future (Paperback): Kengo Sakurada Bushido Capitalism - The code to redefine business for a sustainable future (Paperback)
Kengo Sakurada
R213 Discovery Miles 2 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2020, the world was rocked by the sudden and indiscriminate spread of COVID-19. But for all the damage caused - lives lost, economies roiled and jobs eradicated - it also created opportunities for individuals and businesses to pause and reflect. Bushido Capitalism explores the ways in which this forced interlude has allowed us to reflect on the effects of a Great Acceleration of the last two decades and to critically evaluate where we should go next. Guided by updated values of Bushido, which have long been enshrined in Japanese culture but are rarely referenced in the West, this book presents ways in which we can use this current inflection point to become more responsible, ethical and sustainably minded citizens and business leaders. It underscores the importance of collaboration, humility and realism, but also of confidence, ambition and creativity. It demonstrates that businesses, particularly in a complex and polarized world, can be a force for the common good of society - if run the right way.

Plant Physiological Ecology - Field methods and instrumentation (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): R. Pearcey, H.A. Mooney, P.W. Rundel Plant Physiological Ecology - Field methods and instrumentation (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
R. Pearcey, H.A. Mooney, P.W. Rundel
R5,514 Discovery Miles 55 140 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Physiological plant ecology is primarily concerned with the function and performance of plants in their environment. Within this broad focus, attempts are made on one hand to understand the underlying physiological, biochemical and molecular attributes of plants with respect to performance under the constraints imposed by the environment. On the other hand physiological ecology is also concerned with a more synthetic view which attempts to under stand the distribution and success of plants measured in terms of the factors that promote long-term survival and reproduction in the environment. These concerns are not mutually exclusive but rather represent a continuum of research approaches. Osmond et al. (1980) have elegantly pointed this out in a space-time scale showing that the concerns of physiological ecology range from biochemical and organelle-scale events with time constants of a second or minutes to succession and evolutionary-scale events involving communities and ecosystems and thousands, if not millions, of years. The focus of physiological ecology is typically at the single leaf or root system level extending up to the whole plant. The time scale is on the order of minutes to a year. The activities of individual physiological ecologists extend in one direction or the other, but few if any are directly concerned with the whole space-time scale. In their work, however, they must be cognizant both of the underlying mechanisms as well as the consequences to ecological and evolutionary processes."

Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life (Hardcover, 1988 ed.): Guido Chelazzi, Marco Vannini Behavioral Adaptation to Intertidal Life (Hardcover, 1988 ed.)
Guido Chelazzi, Marco Vannini
R5,431 Discovery Miles 54 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Behavioural Adaptation to Intertidal Life" held in Castiglioncello, Italy (May, 1987) was attended by 50 participants, most of whom presented requested lectures. It was perhaps the first time that specialists of various animal groups, from cnidarians to birds, were able to meet and discuss the importance of behavioural adaptation to this peculiar, sometimes very harsh environment. But the taxonomic barrier is not the only one which the meeting attemped to over come. Lately, the research on intertidal biology has spread from pure taxonomy and static analysis of community structure to such dynamic aspects as intra- and interspecific relationships, and physiological mechanisms aimed at avoiding stress and exploitation of limited-resources. This increasing interest stems not only from an inclination for this particular ecological system and some of its typical inhabitants, but also from the realization that rocky and sandy shore communities are suitable models for testing and improving some global theories of evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology and sociobiology. The number of eco-physiological and eco-ethological problems emerging from the study of intertidal animals is fascinatingly large and a complete understanding of this environment cannot be reached using a strictly "reductionistic" or a pure "holistic" approach."

Adam Markham
R5,234 Discovery Miles 52 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Climate change represents one of the most alarming long-term threats to ecosystems the world over. This new collection of papers provides, for the first time, an overview of the potentially serious impact that climate change may have on tropical forests. The authors, a multi-disciplinary group of leading experts in climatology, forestry, ecology and conservation biology, present a state-of-knowledge snapshot of how tropical forests are likely to react to the changes being wrought on our planet's atmosphere and climate. Tropical forests represent extraordinary harbours for biological diversity, and yet as deforestation and degradation continue apace, they are under greater pressure from human impacts than ever before. Climate change adds yet another threat to these valuable ecosystems, and this volume demonstrates just how significant a problem this may really be. The authors identify certain types of forest, including tropical montane cloud forest that may be particularly vulnerable. They also show the strong likelihood of global warming aggravating problems in already fragmented forest areas.

Ingun Grimstad Klepp, Tone Skardal Tobiasson
R4,305 Discovery Miles 43 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the importance of the agriculturally-based fiber and textile industry, and how local, small-scale operations and markets, coupled with a connection to soil health, can lead the way to new transformative changes. It draws on a four-year research project on Norwegian wool, as well as similar studies in Poland and Portugal. It also explores the role of women and the Indigenous perspective: in Europe this will constitute Sami and Inuit, in Northern America the Inuit and First Nations in Canada, along with Native Americans. Born out of academic interest in the slow food movement, the importance of local raw materials has been put under the spotlight in recent years. Meanwhile, the havoc wreaked by the fast fashion industry has been drawing attention to the need for a new, sustainable approach to clothing and textile manufacture. This edited collection is unique in its scope, taking the conversation beyond traditional debates around fast fashion and agriculture, and examining how textile industry is rooted in the land, and within society and community. Featuring a diverse range of authors, the book will be valuable reading for academics interested in sustainable management, the study of consumption, the study of Indigenous perspectives, and the study of agricultural practices.

Warfare Ecology - A New Synthesis for Peace and Security (Hardcover, Edition.): Gary E. Machlis, Thor Hanson, Zdravko Spiric,... Warfare Ecology - A New Synthesis for Peace and Security (Hardcover, Edition.)
Gary E. Machlis, Thor Hanson, Zdravko Spiric, Jean E. McKendry
R4,046 Discovery Miles 40 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The purpose of this book is specific and ambitious: to outline the distinctive elements, scope, and usefulness of a new and emerging field of applied ecology named warfare ecology. Based on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, the book provides both a theoretical overview of this new field and case studies that range from mercury contamination during World War I in Slovenia to the ecosystem impacts of the Palestinian occupation, and from the bombing of coral reefs of Vieques to biodiversity loss due to violent conflicts in Africa. Warfare Ecology also includes reprints of several classical papers that set the stage for the new synthesis described by the authors. Written for environmental scientists, military and humanitarian relief professionals, conservation managers, and graduate students in a wide range of fields, Warfare Ecology is a major step forward in understanding the relationship between war and ecological systems.

The Ecology of the Fish Pond Ecosystem - with special reference to Africa (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): Guy Delince The Ecology of the Fish Pond Ecosystem - with special reference to Africa (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
Guy Delince
R5,204 Discovery Miles 52 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An understanding of the ecology of a fish pond is essential for the achievement of steady and high fish production in ponds. For the ecologist, the fish pond is a small laboratory: easy to investigate and responding rapidly to manipulation. For the aquaculturist, the ecology shows the ways and means of interventions ensuring an increase of production. The book deals with the different aspects of natural production within a pond, referring it to African conditions: considering first the role of soil as source and sink of nutrients for the water, then nutrient cycling within water and the fate of fertilizers added to ponds, and finally the contribution of natural productivity to fish production. The important sum of information brought together in this volume is valuable for both aquaculturist and ecologist, who lack a handbook on the ecology of a fish pond. It will capture the interest of African aquaculturists and stimulate aquaculture research on natural production.

Worth Saving - International Diplomacy to Protect the Environment (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Anne Egelston Worth Saving - International Diplomacy to Protect the Environment (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Anne Egelston
R863 Discovery Miles 8 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook is intended to be used in an upper-level international environmental issues class as part of the American Environmental Studies and Sciences book series. This class is commonly taught at both the undergraduate and graduate level as part of either an environmental studies program, a political science program, or within a policy track of an environmental science program. Given the length of time that negotiations have occurred, a new generation of students and practitioners will need to understand the complex processes that produced many of our environmental treaties. The majority of the students in environmental studies do not have a background in political science. Moving from a political science approach to an interdisciplinary approach will benefit the students by making the material more accessible. As these fields continue to grow and develop, regulatory compliance becomes increasingly important. Thus, this book is aimed at adding a business and industry perspective to this field where appropriate.

End Game - Tipping Point for Planet Earth? (Paperback): Professor Anthony Barnosky, Professor Elizabeth Hadly End Game - Tipping Point for Planet Earth? (Paperback)
Professor Anthony Barnosky, Professor Elizabeth Hadly 1
R289 R98 Discovery Miles 980 Save R191 (66%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What happens when vast population growth endangers the world's food supplies? Or our water? Our energy needs, climate, or environment? Or the planet's biodiversity? What happens if these all become critical at once? Just what is our future? In End Game, world-renowned scientists Anthony Barnosky and Elizabeth Hadly explain the growing threats to humanity as the planet edges towards a resource war for remaining space, food, oil and water. And as they show, these wars are not the nightmares of a dystopian future but are already happening today. They explore the origins of Ebola in densely populated areas of south-eastern Guinea, witness raging fires in Yellowstone and Colorado and explain how drought-induced food shortages are already causing problems in the Sudan, Gaza Strip and Iraq. Finally, they ask: at what point will inaction become the break-up of the intricate workings of the global society? The planet is in danger now, but the solutions, as Barnosky and Hadly show, are still available. We still have the chance to avoid the tipping point and to make the future better. But this window of opportunity is closing fast and will shut within ten-to-twenty years. End Game is the call we need.

James Justus
R2,766 R2,336 Discovery Miles 23 360 Save R430 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ecology is indispensable to understanding the biological world and addressing the environmental problems humanity faces. Its philosophy has never been more important. In this book, James Justus introduces readers to the philosophically rich issues ecology poses. Besides its crucial role in biological science generally, climate change, biodiversity loss, and other looming environmental challenges make ecology's role in understanding such threats and identifying solutions to them all the more critical. When ecology is applied and its insights marshalled to address these problems and guide policy formation, interesting philosophical issues emerge. Justus sets them out in detail, and explores the often ethically charged dimensions of applied ecological science, using accessible language and a wealth of scientifically-informed examples.
