During the mid-thirties in Paris, Gurdjieff drew together four women: Solita Solano, Kathryn Hulme, Alice Rohrer and Elizabeth Gordon -- and formed a special, mutually supporting work group. In allegory he explained: You are going on a journey under my guidance, an "inner-world journey" like a high mountain climb where you must be roped together for safety, where each must think of the others on the rope, all for one and one for all. You must, in short, help each other "as hand washes hand," each contributing to the company according to her lights, according to her means. Only faithful hard work on yourselves will get you where I want you to go, not your wishing. Among themselves they called their foursome "The Rope." The company around Gurdjieff's table, his principal teaching site, soon expanded to include Louise Davidson, Margaret Anderson, Georgette Leblanc and Jane Heap.

The body-mind connection is a well-documented fact in today's medical paradigm. Yet, long before recent scientific research uncovered this natural linkage, it was described in Kabbalistic healing manuals, with one important difference--there it was understood to be a link between the body, mind, and soul of kabbalah and healing. This healing manual explains Kabbalah's centuries-old perception of human physiology, its view on how to maintain overall health, and how this is dependent on our spiritual well-being. "The phenomenon of disease is one of spiritual] separation or estrangement," the rabbi writes pertaining to kabbalah and healing. When disconnected from our innermost self, and our spiritual Source, illness manifests. Were we to understand the true source of our ailments, and give full expression to our yearning to connect with our life Source, we would have no need for external remedies. Whether you rely on today's holistic healing or on more traditional medicine, you'll benefit from the Kabbalistic prescriptions for healing and understanding of human physiology laid out in this valuable book. Body, Mind, Soul: Kabbalah and Healing includes: Kabbalistic healing is a complete system of belief and practice. Of interest to anyone seeking true holism.
An investigation into the underpinnings and superstructures of the Pagan world view Pagan religions have tended to be more concerned with practice that with theory and in a system that has no dogma - no legislated doctrine - that is as it should be. Yet as the movement grows and matures, it is inevitable that we will begin to think in a more abstract way about our models and systems. John Michael Greer has provided a primer on the kinds of ideas and themes that must be included in any discussion of the theology and philosophy of Neo-pagan religions. Much of the book takes shape in a dialogue with existing ideas in theology, philosophy, and comparative religion. It looks to find a middle ground between too much and too little reference to the work of other scholars to find a comprehensible yet intellectually rigorous middle ground. It aims to be part of a conversation, that stretches out over the centuries. Voices of polytheist spirituality have had little place in that conversation for many years, but much of value has been said in their absence. The rebirth of polytheism as a living religious tradition in the Western world will inevitably force a reassessment of much of that heritage, and pose challenges to some of its most cherished assumptions. Yet reassessment is not necessarily rejection, and the traditions of modern polytheism are deeply enough indebted to legacies from the past that an attentive ear to earlier phases of the conversation is not out of place.

The modern mystic-the contemporary spiritual seeker-is always looking for ways to enhance and expand his or her consciousness. Using quotes from spiritual masters as well as personal stories and anecdotes, "A Manual for the Modern Mystic" shares practical, easily attainable tools that promote spiritual growth through consciousness development. Rio Olesky, a professional astrologer and spiritual practitioner, offers a thoughtful guide through the mystical thought of several major spiritual traditions while exploring the ultimate goal of the mystical pursuit-the meaning of life. As he defines and discusses twelve universal laws-each reflective of a sign of the zodiac-he helps lead you to discovering a deep personal connection to the Divine while avoiding self-undermining behaviors that limit spiritual growth. Through Olesky's explanation of universal laws, mystics will learn more about their connection to the physical plane, fascinating social behaviors, and the complexities of family dynamics. Development of consciousness is perhaps the ultimate purpose and prime reason that life exists." A Manual for the Modern Mystic" helps contemporary spiritual seekers tune in to a rich, intuitive awareness of the world around them that ultimately leads to peace of mind and happiness.
In many ways, Arbatel is unique among texts on magic. Unlike the vast majority of writings, it is clear, concise, and elegantly written. The practical instructions are straightforward and undemanding. When it first appeared in 1575, it attracted the attention of people with a surprisingly broad range of agendas, including some of the finest minds of the time. Often quoted and reprinted, both praised and condemned, its impact on western esoteric philosophy has been called "overwhelming." Arbatel's magic is full of wonder and free from the sinister elements usually associated with texts on the subject. But it is about more than magic; filled with gnomic wisdom, it urges us to help our neighbors, be positive and grateful, and use time wisely. Above all, it teaches us to pay attention, looking for the wondrous and miraculous. In fact, to the author this virtually defines the magus. Included are illustrations, bibliography, index, and original Latin text.
The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, active in the last decades of the 19th century, was the only order of its time that taught practical occultism in the Western Mystery Tradition. This is the first complete and undistorted account, tracing the origins, founders, and practices of this very secretive order, which counted among its members many of the well-known figures of late 19th-century occultism, spiritualism, and Theosophy, including Max Theon, Peter Davidson, Thomas Henry Burgoyne and Paschal Beverly Randolph. This scholarly work provides all the materials for revisioning the history, assigning the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor its rightful place as one of the most influential esoteric orders of its time.

Most people know that Genesis, the first book of the Bible and the first of the Five Books of Moses, tells the story of creation. Lesser-known is the story behind Genesis and how this backstory can be used to connect with a higher realm. Kabbalah teaches that Genesis provides an understanding of the universe on a seed level, and thus its lessons can help seekers reach their full potential. This new rendition of Genesis forms a bridge between the Zohar (Kabbalah's sacred text) and the Torah or Bible. The first in a projected five-volume series (all Five Books of Moses), "Genesis" is edited by noted scholar and teacher Yehuda Berg and features contributions by legendary Kabbalists Rav Yehuda Ashlag, Rav Yehuda Brandwein, and Rav P. S. Berg. Presented in a handsome hardcover edition, "Genesis" comes in a user-friendly format, printed front-to-back with the Hebrew and English on facing pages.

The History of the Devil (1900) is a philosophical study by Paul Carus. A lifelong Monist, Carus sought to apply a scientific analysis to the principles of humanity's religions. Credited with bridging the gap between Eastern and Western beliefs, Carus believed that the dualism rampant in the West could be replaced in order to establish a more equitable world where difference and diversity would be accepted and nurtured, rather than suppressed. "This world of ours is a world of opposites. There is light and shade, there is heat and cold, there is good and evil, there is God and the Devil. The dualistic conception of nature has been a necessary phase in the evolution in human thought." Recognizing the need for dualism in the history of humanity, Carus sought to promote the principles of Monism in the West, believing it could lead to a universal worldview capable of uniting East and West. A positivist and pantheist, Carus believed that by pursuing "in religion the same path that science travels, [...] the narrowness of sectarianism [would] develop into a broad cosmical religion which shall be as wide and truly catholic as is science itself." To lay the groundwork for this "cosmical religion," he investigates the figure of the Devil and the historical evolution of the concept of evil, which he saw as predating belief in goodness and God. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Paul Carus' The History of the Devil is a classic of philosophy reimagined for modern readers.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the classic Hindu text on the spiritual practice of yoga. Written more than 2,000 years ago, these teachings provide a rich, contemplative understanding of yoga and philosophy. In this book, best-selling author and shaman Alberto Villoldo reveals how these teachings are available to us at all times-without gurus, temples, or decades of study. Villoldo's own fieldwork with the high shamans of the Americas has shown that the goals of shamanism and yoga are identical, and he demonstrates the parallels in their practices. In a series of short, inspirational passages from the Sutras, the reader is led toward self-realization and enlightenment in its simplest form. In this treasured book, Villoldo brings to life the spiritual teachings of yoga in a pure and practical way-stripped of dogma and brimming with poetry and spirit. |
